Reworking Syndra passive. Thoughts and Ideas welcomed.

I am one of those people that think Syndra doesn't really have a passive. I mean it is there...at level 9 when you max your first ability but until that point she has no passive or anything to use.

I wanted to follow her lore of unleashing unlimited power, but then being held back. So after reading the lore, figuring out her moves and what they do, and seeing other passives, I came up with this.

I will welcome thoughts (and maybe a little flaming). So here we go:

Passive: Whenever Syndra hits an enemy champion with her Dark Spheres, she gains a charge. When we collects 3 charges Syndra goes into her Transcendent form for X seconds and her abilities gain bonus effects during this time. When Transcendent form has ended, she cannot collects charges for a certain amount of time.

Note: I like to think of this like Gnar passive. A moment of great power, showing her full power until it is chained back up. And the cooldown before using it again allows enemy windows to attack while also making sure that Syndra players use the form wisely. A extra bonus would be that when she enter her Transcendent form, she says her lines that she usually says when one of her abilities maxes out.

Q: Syndra conjures a Dark Sphere dealing magic damage. The sphere remains and can be manipulated by her other powers. deals 2/3/4/5/8% bonus damage to champions. When in Transcendent form, the bonus damage to champions doubles.

**Note: **Because it has bonus damage to champs no matter if she Transcendent, the damage should be lower. The damage would still be good thanks to the bonus to champs and monstrous while Transcended. Make sure to land these as you need to in order to get those charges.

W: Syndra picks up and throws a Dark Sphere or enemy minion dealing magic damage and slowing the Movement Speed of enemies for 1.5 seconds. When in Transcendent form, the shockwave is larger and the slow duration increases to 2.5 seconds.

Note: If you throw a Dark Sphere and it hits champs, you get a charge. But throwing enemy minions/pets/Heimer turrets do not give you a charge. Choose what to throw and aim well.

E: Syndra knocks enemies and Dark Spheres back dealing magic damage. Enemies hit by Dark Spheres become stunned. The spell width increases as you level it up. When in Transcendent form, Enemy minions/pets can also stun, but only for 0.5 seconds.

**Note: **Because of the longer range you can get with this and the fact it can stun, I think it would be best if champs hit by Dark Sphere do not give charges...unless the cooldown Scatter the Weak is increased..then give them charges.

R: Passive: Leveling up this skill increases the time she can stay in Transcendent form.

Active: Syndra bombards an enemy Champion with all of her Dark Spheres. When in Transcendent form, the range of the ult increases by 100.

Note: The passive is mostly to help in laning phase and late game. Her Transcendent form in lane will be very short, only lasting a few seconds so she wouldn't be to OP, but then as you level up her ult and get to mid game, she can stay in her form a bit longer. Then when late game comes around and she maxes her ult, she can stay in her Transcendent form much longer, perfect for those late-game teamfights.

Thoughts?

I don't think your passive quite hits her. Syndra's personality is all about her slowly but surely getting more used to her own powers, mastering them and using them better and better. In that sense her current passive makes sense - when she "masters" (aka maxes) an ability, she unlocks hidden potential in it. Your passive is more "she briefly gets strong, then gets weak, then strong again" and I think Syndra needs a passive with permanency which is what yours doesn't offer. Also, yours would lead to her playing very differently and as someone who counts Syndra as among their favourite champions right now, I'd rather she didn't.

Syndra's current passive obviously isn't perfect, but I think it's slightly unfairly judged. She doesn't just have a passive at level 9, 13, 16 and 18 - she has a passive at level 9 that by level 18 is giving her some serious power. It's not overly engaging but I do enjoy the bonuses on her abilities, and it makes sense lore-wise and gameplay-wise as a way to allow her to scale better into the late game when her AP% scaling (which is terribly mediocre) wouldn't allow her to otherwise.

Please don't think I'm a Syndra fanboy who just wants their main left alone - I'm open to discussions on a new passive because as said, her current one isn't perfect, I just don't think this is one I could get behind.

Thank you for your time and thoughts.

I understand you not wanting her power to be held back and I like your thought about her "slowly but surely getting more used to her own powers, mastering them and using them better and better"

The reason why I made this one is that lore wise, she is still working on her full power and that someone, or something is always trying to hold her back. So that why my passive idea is "moments of true power, but then held back."

I'm glad to see that even though you are a Syndra player, you gave this some time and admit her passive isn't the best. Thank you.

I have to agree... the mid-late game power spikes as you pick up the passive upgrades fit her playstyle and lore well to me. They aren't very engaging (or really, they aren't engaging at all), but they are very real.

I think it would feel more effective if it has a visible change-- like the Kha'Zix evolutions making physical changes to his model. Maybe some particle upgrades as the passive kicks in would really sell the 'mastery' aspect of the passive, and would signal to both the player and the opponent when those power spikes have come into play.

The biggest problem I have with the 'transcendence form' passive is that it also provides her a strong (albiet brief) power spike early as well as late, and even if that form duration scales into lategame it's still not permanent because it comes in phases. That just doesn't translate to 'mastery' to me-- when something is mastered, I expect its performance to be both consistent and effective. It also cuts away from her early game weakness, which hurts both the kit and the lore in my eyes.

Understandable.

And I think current Syndra's orbs that fly around her changes when her skills get max. But it very hard to see especially during a fight.

I agree. It's not enough for anyone to really notice the difference unless they know her well enough to watch for it. And even then It's hard to spot.

The unleashing process must contain permanent features not temporal ones. Just saying.

lightdragoon881 votes

She is still being limited, being held back. Even by her own body.

It not like she is Xerath.

For some reason my comment was deleted. :c

Yeah sorry about that. I went to re-edit and change some stuff around and it somehow effected our talk.

Anyway like I said before, I didn't want the enhancement to be to powerful considering how easy it can be to get full charges mid-late game when teamfights happen, but I would consider the bigger AOE slow and the fact that anything scatter from her E (like pets and minions) giving a stun would make it powerful.

I was wondering how the passive works. Do you have an infinite amount of time to hit 3 Qs on an enemy champ if you haven't transcended before? Or would you have a time limit?

After carefully analyzing the changes I can say that they look good and balanced. However, I believe that her ultimate needs to have a more dynamic change in transcended form. Adding 100 range kinda just seems like a tacked on buff just for the purpose of nuking someone from further away. I'm not sure how to dynamically change such a boring point and click ultimate :/

i really like the idea of her ult just getting 100 range, her ult is already limited by how many spheres she has on the field and a lot of things have to be taken into account. such as how to use the spheres it creates effectively, that making it require having her passive on to be at full effectiveness isn't a very good idea. with just a range increase, you are not punished for using it without your passive up.

lightdragoon881 votes

That was the reason why it was just an range increase.

Her current passive has it only increase by 75 and that is at level 16. Having a bigger range (100) just at level 6 always make it more powerful than the current one.

As for Cosmic Warper question: I would consider the time to be unlimited to get charges. If they decay then we could make her unleashed form more powerful, but I am worry that might make it to unbalanced.

How about this idea: If she recalls (or dies) she loses any stacks she has at the moment?

King Dellron2 votes

i really like this idea, i think it fits well with syndra's theme, i dislike her current passive. i feel like 3 is too small of a number though, maybe increase it to something like 6. have it decay at a slow rate when she hasn't gained a stack in a while, and have it only decay one at a time, like jinx's pow-pow stacks.

this adds more strategy to it, and gives her much clearer down times, which allows her up times to be stronger.

another thing i would do, is allow her ult to reset the cooldown on gaining more stacks. this could set up some fancy combo's where she just uses her passive, then saves her ult till her passive is over to gain it back almost immediately.

finally, i don't like allowing her e to make minions stun, it removes one of the iconic things about her. instead i would increase the range a sphere can travel. another idea is to increase the stun duration the further the sphere has traveled. also, i would allow spheres launched by her e to add stacks to her passive.

lightdragoon881 votes

The reason I made it 3 stacks was due to the balls traveling around her. They would glow when she gain stacks so she, allies, and enemies can see at a glance where she is at and when she will change.

I like the idea of minions/pets stunning when she is Transcendent, but the stun from them is much lower than a stun from a Dark Sphere so it can be more balance in my opinion.

this is sick bro, but that's impossible, if this cmes true, she will be the strongest champ in the game

lightdragoon882 votes

Even more than Lee Sin? I don't see that happening.

Mansana2 votes

DYK that before release in the PBE, Syndra was intentionally gonna have a brief knock-up on her W at max rank.

lightdragoon882 votes

Really?

Well in the age of Yasuo where everyone new champ/rework need a knockup, why not let her Transcendent form have the knockup. lolz.

Mansana1 votes

Idk, probably because in terms of unique input, it would feel too close to Cho'gath's rupture. Syndra having a 4.8 second knock-up at max cdr vs Cho'gaths 5.4 second knock-up. Riot would have expected it to be strong. It would probably destroy a unique identity, however Cho'gath who is more of a tank than a mage so I see no problem, he'll be able to survive long enough to probably cast more knock-ups than a Syndra. I see no reason why they couldn't implement a knock-up in the first place unless it had some major bugs to the point where they gave up and made it so it would appear that maxing W was decent.

Here are all the initial values and mechanics before it's debut on pbe, where they massively changed her: Link

o.0 She used to be able to do a 9 sphere ulti.

Ouch just...ouch.

Well thank you.

Ryze builds up stacks of Arcane Mastery as he casts his abilities. After reaching max stacks, Ryze becomes temporarily supercharged and gains a couple of powerful buffs

Ok is it just me or does this sound like my Idea for Syndra here?

lightdragoon881 votes

Don't be afraid to share your thoughts to me. I am a nice guy. :D

Thanotos Omega1 votes

Syndra's passive is designed to not exist early game as the trade off for all her power, you can't offer her anything else without taking away from her kit in other places,

lightdragoon882 votes

Q damage would be lower (in return for the bonus damage to champs being there all the time)

E would have a longer cooldown

W would have either lower damage or a smaller slow %.

lightdragoon881 votes

Mmmm...pretty split between people liking it and people hating it.

Please share more with me. :D

Some more talk please? Something other then the veigar and URF topics.

i think syndra should be untouched because in solo queue she is just so OP and usuall gets banned so why rework her playstyle

She would only be buffed in Transcendent Form.

Outside of that she would be weaker than current Syndra....I think.

Her passive could be: Power without Limit (as she even says as a quote) that the longer an orb is on the ground, the more "unstable" it becomes until it goes away / overloads. So once the orb is placed, it will erupt with power, so she still has control over the area / has a presence with orbs laid out after her ult or after well placed Q / Ws.

Getting Q to rank 5 increases the time until eruption, but also gives each eruption more "oomph" since she is stronger and has mastered the skill. Getting W to rank 5 increases the amount of orbs she can pick up and launch in succession. A change to her W would be to click on orbs ( (limited by certain radius around her) and allowing her to throw them again (leveling up W only increases the amount she can pick up when activating W, maybe increasing the radius...??? but for her, the orbs are targetable after she activates her W so she can pick and choose orbs at will (like she already can). So the player decides in what order the orbs she picks up will be in to most suit her strategy.

Her E right now is okay... but needs something to be much more game-changing. Maybe having it as a pull/push active instead of just a push (based on where the user's cursor is). So if a tank is on her and she doesnt have help kiting, she can pull a nearby orb in a direct line path closer to her to do the stun instead of launching it where it wouldn't help her. Leveling her E up would pull 1-5 nearby orbs directly towards her (but not necessarily all the way to her).

This would also play nicely with the "erupt" change so she could time it so the orb stuns and then erupts on the stunned target that was on her. It also works well with the W change, so she has more orbs in her radius to choose from when she wants to pick them up.
