Mid-silver matchmaking

I know, people gripe about matchmaking all the time, but I'm less complaining and more confused.

I'm basically a silver 3 support main (currently silver 4, 88 LP). For this entire season—about 100 games, most in silver—I've noticed that when I'm in S3, my teams are substantially worse (compared to the opponent, obviously) than when I get demoted to S4. I've been demoted... three times now? Maybe four. Every time I drop, I'm back in promos with at most one loss on my record, and except for this past one, I win a promo game and make it back to S3.

By "substantially worse", I mean in S3 I routinely have those games where your mid Xerath dies seven times in fourteen minutes or your lane partner thinks you can all in when the opponent is under turret at half health. The situations where at least two teammates feed so early that, even as a support with more carry potential (Zyra, in my case), the tide of the game has turned too far by the time you're capable of impacting the rest of the map. But in S4, the vast majority of my teams handle their business and at most we just have to gain some small advantage in bot to carry our weight. I neither claim to be great in the S4 games nor awful in the S3 ones; I'm basically playing the same game.

Is there some kind of an explanation for this? Does it happen at other divisional cutoffs? At first I thought it was because of early season placements frequently being placed in mid-silver—which may have been partly the case, given how many smurfs I saw—but it's still happening and the smurf problem is mainly gone.

In what world was this winnable? I'm the support. Yet I was basically expected to carry...

^ THIS is why I've barely played in a month. WHy ruin my good standing account with stacked matches that hinder me?

Morg is my best support, of course I start doing better as her after I pick her up again from Galio and notice the trend in bad match making. I fucking hate this system. I'm being punished for playing my best. Matching me against Plat players and with Iron Bronze players is so fucked up. Everyone deserves teammates and opponents of equal skill, queue times be damned.

I enjoy this same nonsense everytime I play. Silver 4 is a breeze, Silver 3 is a brick wall because of team mates that are put there when unranked or recently ranked but put into there by a poor placement system. The problem is, once you are put into bronze league, "re-calibration" next season is really just 10 punishment games where you can't place higher than the previous season no matter how well you do. You can only place lower if you mess up or get crap team mates.

Yep

My belief is that after about 300 (just a number) games Riot "locks" you to a Rank and will hard stack games to make you stay there. The only way to unlock is to win like 80% of your games and then Riot will relock you to the next rank. So once Riot think it knows where IT thinks you should be, it will not let you climb and it does this by stacking games.

Instead of always matching teams with similar players and letting players rise and fall at a natural and faster rate.

When do players who want to climb realise LoL isn't rocket science and the easiest way to achieve a higher rank is by focusing on your own gameplay and improve that instead of making up false conspiracy theories about matchmaking?

Large majority of players who make posts like OP are silver. Believe me, not even Master+ tier looks respectable right now, but being stuck in silver is just pitiful. It means you are totally trash. I'm so fed up with people crying over their teammates, when in fact they are just as garbage. It is possible to reach high diamond by playing 1v9 and still be quite incompetent at the game. Therefore the effort you need to solo carry in silver is nonexistent.

Yes, this was meant to be offensive so you would wake up and accept that if you are stuck in silver you should only blame yourself.

What I said above is the truth no matter how many downvotes this gets. Because it's silvers who downvote it since they want to hide rational facts.

Happens in Gold too. Whenever I win too many games, Riot gives me terrible team mates and average enemies to play against. I usually win my lane since I'm an punish enemy bot laners for farming and in this elo they suck at trading. If I get close to ranking up in series or promos, riot gives me brain dead players who are on losing streaks or has a history of just doing bad to try and hold me back. Then When I get too low in elo, I suddenly get players who carry me before I can even get 100 cs. Sad how climbing and getting better at league is determined by a AI instead of actual skill. Even pro players like GBM has been stuck in bronze elo and had to make new accounts to get out of the system. Sad when a game is based on luck and an Ai and not skills. No wonder league is so dry nowadays.

Glad to see I'm not alone. I think.

FWIW, I started using a site called your.gg. I'm not vouching for it overall, but it has a "Team Matching Luck" section where it gauges whether you, personally, had good luck in how the system matched you with your teammates and opponents. It ranks matchups as Worst, Bad, Normal, Good, or Best. It seems pretty accurate; I can nail pretty much every time what it will say the matchup luck for a given game was, because bad matchups feel bad, good matchups feel good, etc.

It also doesn't appear to simply spit out "bad" in games you lose or "good" when you win. I've looked at a lot of teammates and opponents, and many of them will have bad matchups they win or good ones they lose, whereas for me it's pretty much winning good (and, thankfully, most normal) matchups, and losing bad ones. When the result swings against expectation, there's often a smurf (we had a major smurf as our jungler in my last game, as of this post, and won a "bad" matchup). In theory, I should rise winning most normal games, but my team matching luck is always at "bad" for the last ten games.

Anyway, here's a link to mine, and you can easily find your own name. See what your matchup luck is and if you're getting just as screwed.

This just happened to me. Yeah I don't know what is happening. I play mid and top, I had a 64% win rate on my mains until I hit silver 3 now they are down to 56%, it was pretty easy moving up through silver 4 and all of a sudden in silver 3 I can't get a team worth anything and I am not good enough to carry games where the other 2 lanes and jungle lose extremely hard.

My only guess is bad match making, putting low skill players with high skill players to "balance" the MMRs for each team, which doesn't seem fair or make a lot of sense to me. I am still on a loss streak currently so maybe its just bad match making throughout, and it is just luck where those loss streaks hit.

Honestly OP, I think it’s a consistency problem with silver. You get people who only know how to play in one linear fashion and when things don’t work out, they snowball the enemy team EXTREMELY hard. People don’t ward, they don’t fully understand what they are supposed to do in certain match ups, and they get tilted really fast. Silver is the elo i hate the most. The enemy team Is good enough to be a problem when they are ahead, and yet teammates aren’t good enough to play from behind. The name of the game is snowballing for silver. I learned that from the Smurfs. Pick aggressive picks (for support think blitz, thresh, pyke, zyra, brand) take ignite, and try to snowball really hard. If you’re ahead, camp lanes and try to get them ahead. Keep river red warded. As for Smurfs, all you can do is avoid feeding them. But it’s tough. If they are high elo, they most likely will get fed from somewhere. Most smurfs will play mid/jungler so they impact the game more. I’d say try to deep ward early and ping like crazy on where they are headed. After that, you have to just keep at it. If someone is getting double digit deaths, just cross the game out in your head. It’s low elo so throws happen, but just think of it as a loss already and just play to see how you can do better next time. Avoid giving up and typing. Mute is your best friend. Use pings and shot call (IE. type Group drag “ping dragon”) avoid playing on autopilot. People want a leader, and if you can tell them what to do, it avoids having your 13/1/5 Jinx solo farming bot lane instead of ending the game.

TLDR: play aggressive picks in silver, tell your teammates what to do, avoid snowballing the enemy, deep ward often.

I'm having the same experience between S1 and S2. In S2, I get insane winstreaks where even if I mess up, my team can do no wrong. Soon as I advance to S1 I start getting dealt unwinnable hands though. Lost 4 games last night, 1 with an AFK and the other 3 with botlanes that gave up 10+ kills before the 15 minute mark (oddly enough, with an Ashe as our adc each time). Not sure if there's actually anything to it or if it's just the law of averages at work.

Match making in this game has always been terrible and will always be terrible. I mean its definitely gotten worse but I know your pain. Legit feel like every game just a random roulette of will I win the lottery?

And.... yes I know this is the feeling you're supposed to have when you are in your elo. And I am not saying I am really much higher elo than my current elo. The problem I have is this.

So unlike these superiority complex fucks who are just going to shit on people since they don't live and breath League. I have an actual knowledge of what my actual elo is. How? Well.... from years of experience and multiple accounts. I know what its like to be the weak link on your team, the feeling of when your in a higher elo than you should be. Problem is..... I don't feel like that at all right now. Now I don't feel like I should be much of a higher rank... but my problem is this. I know for a fucking fact I am a higher rank than my current elo. I also know that my games don't really feel "difficult" in the feeling of like "holy shit this lane I am playing is really hard". Nope....... not at all actually. And before you shit on me for being silver 1 realize.... yes I am shit... but I am a very consistent kind of shit. LIke mid gold for at least 3+ years kind of shit. My best is not much better than say gold 3 and my worst is now much lower. So when you have a consistent player like me.... literally being stuck in shit losing streaks in games I feel useless because I have some of the dumbest people I have ever seen play the game on my team. It makes me wonder.

NOw for those who have only played the game for a couple years maybe you think "huh guess this is just how the game is". Problem is.... I have played the game for almost 10 years... and its never consistently been as shitty as it's been the last 2 seasons. Damage creep and this obsession with pro league has made solo/duo queue in this game a joke. I really can't imagine actually trying to take solo/duo seriously anymore. Its so fucking boring to play. I miss when I could just clear waves and like focus on objectives rather than having to help my shit team in some shit useless fight because when my shit team dies in this shit fight enemy gets to 2 man fucking baron at 20 mins because baron is a shit ass weakling. There is just so much noob shit in this game now that makes almost every solo/duo game feel fucked. Its just "did I get the r%%%%%s this game or not". And if not.... free win... and if yes.... most likely a loss. And god fucking forbid you want to play something off meta. Insert super oop champ and get free wins. com.

So much rambling but as someone who has plyaed this game for so long and is very consistent in my play... the game feels awful to play compared to how it used to especially as a solo player. I will admit season 9 feels better than 8. But runes reforge was the death of solo queue in my opinion. The damage creep is just too much and completely changed the game.

So now I am stuck playing boring games trying to get back to gold... for gods knows why for the shit free skins we get I guess so I can quit playing solo/duo queue. Because as much as people want to shit on gold.... at least its not shit ass silver and these god damn shit silver borders.

O yea btw... thanks for taking away my fucking gold border at the start of the season for no reason you stupid hillbilly fucks. So cool to just ruin rewards because some noobies pissed they had to wait a few months to receive rewards when all us vets have known this for almost a fucking decade. Plus not like you couldn't have waited like 5 months or something until like split 2...... split the difference. But nope... too complicated for billion dollar co. like Riot.

Mavëríck4/17/2019, 6:38:54 PM1 votes

Same experience. I lose like 20 games and got demoted to Silver 4, currently in promo back to Silver 3. I WAS Silver 2...

Ravenhale4/17/2019, 10:10:06 PM1 votes

Hmm... I kind of like the your.gg site linked in these comments. Makes me want to stretch my graph to S in all five categories ... well some champs I probably won't ever have S damage on, but there's like not much reason to not have an A or higher on things like Sight and Object. Certainly makes me think I might want to consider turning my brain on when I'm playing Leona, (clearly playing too confident without thinking about other important things).

Happens in plat and low diamond. Monkeys will be monkeys no matter how high they manage to climb by spaming games.

"Working as intended", btw :/

eunekid4204/18/2019, 8:21:10 AM1 votes

Those "substantially worse" players have the same 50% winrate as you self do. On average you are as skilled player as they are. Now you just need to improve yourself to have more impact and carry potential. Simplified: Get better if you want to climb. Applies to all similar posts.

Mystery solved.

MiracleMorg944/18/2019, 2:07:25 PM1 votes

Same with me. I've been promoted to s3 and demoted to s4 at least three times this month if not more. I finally just got back to s3 last night. S3 has been a nightmare where I could barely get to 45 LP before dropping down to 0, winning one or two then going back to 0 and doing that for a few times before getting demoted again.

It was so unfair it was unbelievable. Hopefully that won't happen this time but we will see.

Imbetterthanmoe4/18/2019, 3:35:59 PM1 votes

I'm Gold 2 rn this happens to me literally every game. I demote to gold 3 and I don't lose a single game, get back to g2 win one game lose 2 demote and then the cycle repeats. Obviously, I'm not the best player in the world cause I'm only gold but the fact that this happens to me and everyone else just makes no sense.

munguskiller4/17/2019, 6:06:11 PM1 votes

Yes, as a player in S3 i can confirm this same bs, especially the Xerath and s'''. I dont think things are much better in S2 tho.
