If you could design a Support item, what would it be?
tl;dr: title.
There are a lot of complaints about support, such as 1) anything related to Sightstone, 2) the role is "boring" to play, 3) the designated items for support suck, etc.
Particularly the 3rd complaint seems to be a point of interest. A lot of people argue that AP Supports could be more viable if they had proper AP Support items. The primary argument is that there's only one "good" AP Support item out there--which no one explicitly states what it is, but I'm gonna take a wild guess that it's
. Frost Queen's gives 50 AP, 10% CDR, 75% mana regen, 2 gold per 10 seconds, bonus on hit damage and passive gold, and an active vision tool that can effectively slow up to two enemies. It is essentially the all-in-one support item (gold income, vision, and CC?) while also giving some AP.
Or, you know,
, which gives the same 50 AP and 10% CDR, but also 30 Armor and 250 mana, and a passive 20% AP increase and 50% crit chance increase for 8 seconds (who needs coordination, right?)
Then, of course, you have more niche AP Support items, like
or
, which are fantastic on champions like

who can make considerable use of the passive bonus to heals and shields, but it's completely wasted on other supports like

.
But then other staple support items,

just give non-AP stats and actives that AP Supports don't care about because they only want to be a support so long as it doesn't affect their all-AP build.
Honestly, I think most people going AP Support would be satisfied enough to buy
to satisfy the number one complaint of acquiring a sightstone if they had an item like
minus the gold income (and obviously
is out of the question).
If I could create an AP Support item, I would give it stats to compete with Frost Queen's. But before I could do that, I'd have to create a new AP or Mana item. Why?
Well,
has AP and CDR,
has mana regen and CDR,
has mana and CDR,
has armor, mana, and CDR...
I mean, I love CDR as much as the next person, but that's too damn much.
Suppose we create an item, let's call it a "Thingamabob", had 30 AP and 250 mana. It builds from
(435 gold) +
(350 gold) + 115 Gold for a total cost of 900 gold (comparable in price and AP to
, just without the CDR). Boom, two stats instantly more useful to most AP Supports: AP for increased damage, and Mana for more mana to use spells to inflict damage.
But now we have a problem. "Thingamabob" now gives two stats valued by AP mages, so how do we create a support item that can be good and useful to supports without being abused by mid lane mages--but also still making the item appealing to AP Supports so they will actually buy it?
We could combine "Thingamabob" with
+ 250 gold for a total 2,000 gold (cheaper than
, which would have similar stats)
This new item, "Dinglehopper", would have 60 AP, 250 mana, and a passive 5% MS.
Welp. Now we have three stats useful for AP mages, and at a relatively cheap cost compared to other items that also give 60 AP (
). Which means we need a very painfully "support" active/passive, like
. What is something so disgustingly support-like that would discourage offensive mages from buying this outside of the support role?
"Active: Gain 15% bonus movement speed and temporarily be unable to cast spells, but grant one ally 35% of your total AP as bonus AD for 8 seconds. The buff is instantly cancelled if you and your ally are more than 300 units apart, or either you or your ally dies. 90 second cooldown."
Yep, I know it's not the best, but hey, AP mages would never buy that, right? Generally AP Mages are going in to deal their damage and get all the kills, but assumably a support, whether AP or not, would be more willing to step back and loan their power to their carry for 8 seconds. Mix this with a
and
and you just have to manage to survive for 5.5 seconds.
So yeah, you can tell me how horrible my idea is, or you can come up with your own idea for a viable AP Support item that wouldn't be abused by AP Mages.
-esque item that would be strong against AD though, as support items against all ad comps are relatively limited. Obviously it couldn't be outright immune to physical damage, but maybe giving it a hefty armour boost and/or a AS/AD lowering aura so the counterplay would be to have a mage deal with it just as banner is dealt with by an ad.
or
but with like 20-30 armor
