New Champs Should Be Rank Delayed For 1 Week.

AbstracT Theory··569 votes·18,439 views

Its happened to all of us, someone buys a new champion and immediately queues in ranked with them. This should not be allowed for 2 reasons

That person will do suuuuper bad - lack of knowledge of their own kit will make them so terrible that it will be too easy to play against.

That person will do suuuuper good - The enemy will know jack shit about how to play against an ekko, so when he returns to his ult and 0-100 people they will be super confused and wont even know what to do right.

The lack of knowing a champions kit makes it a super bad problem in ranked, all champs should only be allowed in normals for one week, this will allow people to see what that champion is actually capable of.

There is also the issue of bug abuse with new champions.

When Azir was released, you could push R as Azir on an enemy turret. This would cause the turret to permanently stop firing. You could then backdoor and destroy those turrets. It's gamebreaking, not intended design and abusable. It was later fixed (after Azir was disabled), but one has to wonder how many games of ranked were lost because of gamebreaking bugs such as this. And how those loses could have been prevented in the first place by simply disabling him from ranked and letting those bugs get discovered in non-competitive game modes.

Azir was buggier than Kha'zix. Still is Khazix

Like when WW had whatever was wrong with him that had him banned everygame and he was instajibbing people. Wasn't it an interaction with BOTRK or was it another item?

Whinja3 votes

That wasnt a bug, it was either early Feral Flare or the original Red Smite with Devourer's Enchantment combined with his ult that instagibbed people. Intended, but unintentionally (hopefully) broken.

the first devourer was OP. I still remember the jungle items been released and everyone bought that. Later they added cinderhulk and nerfed dev to oblivion.

Celeste Benal5 votes

Devourers interaction wih his ult. He was doing like 200 true damage with every swipe. It was pretty hilarious.

Lugg27 votes

People have been saying this for a LONG time. I wish Riot would listen.

Jeddy01712 votes

It's a very obvious request.Hell, they already do it in the LCS for new champs/reworks.What is so hard about disabling these new champs out of Ranked for the 1st week?

Dengeden11 votes

They don't, LCS is just one patch behind.

JimmyNtheKudos3 votes

The reason they're always a patch behind is to give the players time to adapt to the new patch... basically the same.

Shadow Gilgamesh23 votes

If they did a delay, they should PROBABLY make the delay 1 patch. That way not only do people learn to play as and against, but any extreme cases of OP or UP can get fixed before people are putting their rank on the line.

That would be too long of a wait.

Just use the Mastery thing to make sure they're level 2 or 3 at least.

Matthias911910 votes

If it's a time delay, people who only play Ranked will just wait until the delay is up and THEN play him in Ranked. Doesn't really fix anything. (Other than giving Riot a chance to see the champ on live and maybe make balance adjustments -- although it's hard to say if performance data from Normal matches would be that meaningful, since the level of play is much much higher in Ranked.)

To make a difference on the personal level you'd have to force players to do Normal matches with the champ. That gets obnoxious real fast. There's no guarantee you can even get the champ you want unless you play Team Builder, and TB has atrocious wait times for any newly-released champ (which would be 10x worse if every Ranked player HAD to play them for multiple games).

ForPortal3 votes

Nonsense. Making it possible to avoid the problem is of benefit even without making it mandatory, because people will want to avoid the problem.

Meanie4010 votes

A new champ who hasn't been out for a week is always the champion I ban third. (Why not first? Because the other team might ban it for me because they feel the same way.)

The pros can't play a new champ for either 14 or 28 days (I don't remember what the most recent policy is). Why should it be different for ranked games?

o9y9pcvBhd2 votes

I believe new champions are 14 days, reworks are more situational being 7-14 days depending on scope, bugs that came, etc

How about NO? You own a champion, you get to play them. Anything else is nonsense. Also, there are champions people don't own anyway, so if they just bought Nautilus for example, they should have a two week moratorium on playing him? Get the hell outta here...

People are (whether they mean to or not) ruining the gaming experience for the enemy and their teammates.

Ranked isn't just all about having fun, it's about inevitably reaching a goal and/or being the best. You can't do that when being dragged down by someone who is playing a champ just because "Omg he looks so cool!"

NORMALS are for fun play, NOT RANKED.

RaiseYourBortles6 votes

Or you know they could just do what should have been done a long time ago and require 5 Normal games with a champion before you can play them in ranked.

Come on Riot, it makes perfect sense.

Aych Pii2 votes

Because that would require 5 games on at least 16 different champions, and that would be a pretty obnoxious requirement to just randomly instate.

MrBuffington5 votes

This is why I take a break from ranked when a new champion of rework comes out lol

Krys Star5 votes

It shouldn't be allowed for the very same, EXACT reason that they removed weekly rotations from Ranked picks.

Dedrius4 votes

Thats is why I ban him, or ask my team to ban him every game.

He is just not worth the headache of either case occurring.

UPfreely4 votes

this makes sense cuz this is what they do for competitive play

Spacesuit Spiff3 votes

I'd ban him just because, by being in the game, he essentially makes the game a crapshoot. Not a lot I can do to have impact if he's either 0/10 or 10/0. I do the same for those random "snowball at level 1" champs that sometimes pop up.

Durzaka3 votes

I dont understand how we are 5 years into LoL and this STILL isnt a thing.

We desperately need it.

EkkoFroffles3 votes

Tie it to masteries. Make it so level 2 is required to play any champ, new or old. People playing champions for the first time in ranked isn't just a problem with champions that have just been released. Sure, a champion like Garen might be easy to learn, but I still don't want a first timer playing him on my team.

Monkey D Luffy3 votes

Maybe a 2 or 3 days, a week seems a bit extreme, and in higher ELO people aren't that silly and if they are then they don't belong there, there's also nothing to stop someone buying one of the 110+ champions for the first time and using them in ranked.

Demonsolder213 votes

No what needs to happen is that riot needs to stop releasing champs at an op state.

Kilane1 votes

Why would they? It sells.

People still think it's not pay2win either.

Surr20plz2 votes

Yeah it would suck if you're first time anything. Let the mastery thing apply to all champs.

MacDthree2 votes

I will upvote this forever.
Everybody bans him to keep people on THIER team from playing him for like 2 weeks. It's stupid that new champs are an option in ranked

RISE Shlack1232 votes

I have been posting this since I started playing the game nearly 3 years ago. It's extremely annoying to have someone bring a new champ into ranked. New champions should indeed be delayed for at least 1 week for ranked. At this point, they should also address any glaring issues with a champion, whether it's bugs or overloaded/unbalanced kits.

Like right now, Ekko's ratios are way too high. He should be balanced (nerfed) before he's even in the ranked fray. Ranked is already troll enough as it is without letting newly released champions queue up.

warpenguin5552 votes

is this a petition? can it be? because im signing it

Maikal2 votes

I disagree. It doesn't solve the issue that you could not play said champion for a week, and then take him into ranked for the first time. People should need X wins on a champion before taking them to ranked. I liked the idea of a similar thread of requiring a low mastery level like 2, which requires like 5 wins or so. Also Ekko is so broken, Riot: LETS GIVE A CHAMPION AN AOE VEIGAR ULTIMATE THAT HEALS HIM AND LETS HIM DODGE ABILITIES. ALSO BE SURE TO GIVE A SHIT TON OF FREE DAMAGE/CC INTO HIS KIT TOO. Balance.

DWT123452 votes

agreed. Now we have to waste a ban on him.

ApolloMk22 votes

Agree, for the 1000th time. BUT Riot will keep ignoring because they make more money this way.

Dealth2 votes

Instead of blocking them for 1 week they could make a minimum requirement of normal games played with any champion before using in ranked.

CajunKen1 votes

I honestly disagree with this all the information is at your finger tips if you just look. There is youtube videos, form post on everything you need to know about a champ. weeks before they come out that tell you have to play and defeat the champ. the people I see complaining are the one that are to lazy to look things up.

Looking at a youtube video and playing a champion well are 2 completely opposite scenarios.

iainB851 votes

So they are more expensive in IP AND are ranked restricted?

So basically you want nobody to buy them at launch, then just have the same problem a week after release.

Really doesn't solve anything. The people who play ranked and would buy a champion for extra IP then play normals to practice him I'm betting is pretty low.

Mandang04 votes

Are you defending Riot effectively selling power? I mean... why do you think they're more expensive for only 1 week? And, looking at recent history, are most champions getting released underpowered or overpowered? I think you can connect the dots from there.

RISE Shlack1236 votes

People will still buy the champions without a doubt. So that's not even a valid argument.

Such a ranked delay would promote a more positive atmosphere in the community where people don't use ranked games as a place to try out a brand new champion.

FlawlessAngel1 votes

Any Possible Counter TO EKKKOOOO ?!?!?!?Ekko

Kilane1 votes

not even Morello can counter his ult.

EternalDarknez1 votes

good idea, been kicking around for years now

but in the long run they wont do it because the money...if they release a op champ (any release version of any champ minus bard) then people will wanna buy it and play it in ranked...more people buying the new champ (at a higher price than any other champion) means more money to riot

riot making money>caring that nobody knows how to play or vrs him yet (or fight/troll in champ select and auto lock em etc)

sad but true =/

Jaronimo1 votes

This would also apply to remakes of champions?

TURBO 5OOO1 votes

Bulshit. I never play normals and would just wait 1 more week to play them first time in ranked.

shark music1 votes

They should also be immune to bans for the first week.

FungusDungus1 votes

Whenever I play normals I troll: Is anyone else like this? I usually tryhard in ranked but when I go to normals I do stupid shit.
