Could riot make a competitive alternative to ranked that ranks your champions individually?

Just saying... I don't play ranked. I am not really into the whole permanent results heightening stakes making everyone is high strung sort of atmosphere. Also don't really care about it that much because apart of winning more often and doing better then everyone else in the rank you are at tends to be picking a strong champion(preferably counter picking the enemy champion(s)) that helps facilitate your ability to preform well. I know this only really matters when you get to the elo "you belong at" with your skill level in the champions you use making many players in their elos with the champs they use exceptions to the fact.

A competitive environment I would care about would be one where your results and elo were linked to your individual champions and your ranking was relative to only that champions pool of players. The level of play you would enter matches into would depend on what level you can play a particular champion at. What I am saying is imagine you pick your champions first. You pick which ones you would play in the roles you are willing to play. So I would pick somthing like Lucian ADC and Thresh SUP(yes the skins have them on my mind okay...). Then after que you get placed into matches based on others not having picked those champions or those roles within your team. Obviously this means there wont be banning or counterpicking but this wont matter to the effective results of such a mode. Doing well on Lucian and ranking up on Lucian means I would go up in rank on Lucian and start facing better players with Lucian. This however does not increase my rank on thresh or make me play thresh against better players. There would be a leader boards for each individual champion. Lucian would have his own rank 1 player with win percentages, KDA, KP, and so on. Then there would be a Rank 1 Thresh with all that as well.

The beauty of this is that you can be fully competitive playing what champion and role you want to and care about. Any kind of meta outside of that champions roles and builds is irrelevent. Instead of competeing with everyone in a given level against whatever is meta you compete with all other Lucians or threshes to be the best Lucian or Thresh. Then of course deciding to do a role or champion you arent as good at or as confortable with doesnt punish the ranks you have on your other champions.

It would be about trying to be the best [insert your main] you can be not the best player in general you can be.

Or maybe i just dont understand how all of whats already available works idk, again i dont really care about it the way it is as i understand it.

So normal draft but without a banning phase + champion mastery?

Idk? I don't really think so cause it cant put you into matches based on your performance with the specific champion(s) you pick. You wont play against low elo players then you all the sudden just cause you picked a champion you never played before as everyone involved is already in champ select. What I am talking about requires players to be able to pick their champions and roles before que so it cant be factored into what level of play they will be placed. So if you are good Lucian and played him on this mode a lot then you will be placed with better players. If you are a shit thresh as well and played terribly every time you wont be placed the same as you would with Lucian. Obviously the ranks would be separate and not effect each other.

Then yeah, normal draft plus champion mastery. Your mastery determines your rank, you're qued up based on which lane you picked, then you load into champ select to lock your pick. A p simple concept.

Which will be nightmarish once you realise that one tricking is a thing and that alone well cause really imbalanced team comps. A Diamond AD bruiser Soraka top, for example, doesn't fit into a lot of team comps and your idea gives no time or options to build a team around that choice.

No…

  1. You pick role plus champion.
  2. You click "find match".
  3. You get placed into match based on your performance history with that champion.
  4. There is no champ select... only a time you see what everyone else has so you can decide what runes and summoners you want.
  5. Reward is seeing how you stack up to all others playing that champion in this mode. You receive some sort of badge of honor based on your relative position with that champion only on that champion.

AD bruiser Soraka top would be limited in the level they play at by the fact of what they are playing. They likely wont succeed beyond regular Sorakas and wont be placed beyond the lowest level of play unless the player is just that good they can play at the level of good Renekton and Darius tops.

Problems I can still see coming up.

  1. Pick your role and champion
  2. Find match
  3. Join lobby and see team comp is an unbalanced mess of one trick picks
  4. Lose game because while everyone got what they wanted the team didn't hav what it needed.
  5. Lose Mastery(I'm calling it mastery) because you got rolled for 30+ minutes by a team with a better comp.

Your idea is blind pick that let's you pick a champ before hand and hold up a flag that says "I know how to play this champion." It's not a bad idea, just not a practical one, Mastery already exists and tracking each individual players stats on each individual champion across the entire region then queing players based on that is a massive undertaking. One thats not worth Riot's time when ranked right now functions well.

probably, but odds are it would happen to everyone equally... meaning the results would be fair. It would come down to who can make the best out of suboptimal circumstances at that point. Less weight then actually winning but then if win rates are the same then the others stats would decide the rest. It really wouldn't be a complicated thing to implement I think. Just a matter of setting it up, it is simple after all. Then just let players see if they like it for a season... see if it got a significant player base. Heck I may not like it, of course I cant know that unless I tried it out. I just think I would like it.

Skill on that champion... It would represent your skill on that champion... Your rank would be based on how you compare to others playing that champion. The elo you play at would be dependent on how you play in general, but is specific to that champion... Best warwick =/= challenger level player so you would play warwick against challenger level players. Your skill with warwick is the competition, not being the best player in all of league. If you cared about obtaining top spot on your favorite champions then you will care about the mode.

Win/loss is the best measure of skill. Using other stats will just give a less accurate version of the current ranked system. Also no pick/ban just makes the queue even worse.

Win/loss would be the dominating factor, never said it would be irrelevant. The rank you receive on that champion wouldn't be effected by the ranks others receive on that champion. The "badge of honor" reward you would get would be rewarded relative to others playing the same champ. So becoming the rank 1 Zed isn't effected by who ever is the Rank 1 Akali and so on.

Win/loss should be the only factor. Even something like 90% win/loss and 10% stat would be inferior to strict win/loss. Also, you still have the issue of no pick/ban

One more thing, there already is a way to sort who the highest elo zed or akali is through the api. No one bothers to compile it which kind of shows how little interest there is on the matter.

Lol I just realized what you maybe thinking! the role isn't factored into the match making except by making sure you get the role on that champion. Meaning picking soraka top wouldn't put you in a separate ranking from soraka sup. Also being the rank 1 Nasus doesn't mean you will be placed in challenger, you will be placed in what ever skill level the best Nasus belongs.

No one would take that seriously which would make it very hard to get an accurate ranking. Ranked depends on people actually trying which is why flex is such a mess right now.

Boatwhistle1 votes

I don't understand? People that want to see where they are placed on their favorite champions relative to others playing that champion wouldn't take it seriously? This may hurt play at the lowest level as this is where the trolls and worst preforming players would be at. However those taking it seriously would rise up further to others also doing so.

It is a shittier version of the current ranked system without a pick/ban. Why would anyone care where they place on that? It isn't like it would be representative of skill by any measure.
