How should I ban if I want to climb in ranked?

The question is not who to ban, because that will change, but how to best ban to maximize my chance of winning. Sitting in low gold atm.

A few possible ways to ban:

  1. Ban the champion that is the strongest counterpick to the champ you pick in lane. (This what I've been trying.)

  2. Ban a champion that is viewed as OP at the time. (Cho, Maokai, Janna)

  3. Ban assassins/hyper carries. (Zed, Vayne, Draven, Yasuo, Kog, Talon, Tryn)

  4. Ban playmakers, champions that offer alot of support/engage. (Thresh, Rakan, Orianna, Lee Sin)

How do you ban? What is your strategy? Does it work?

I usually only ban ADC's because they seem to carry the game hard.

Ban the strongest champions you don't intend to play.

If you wanna climb, you're generally supposed to play the same 2-3 champions over and over again. Banning their counterpicks doesn't help you learn to play those champs in all scenarios.

Don't ban assassins or hypercarries unless they're strong. More people play strong champs. You don't wanna ban Shaco and find out nobody on the enemy team plays him, right?

Same thing with playmakers.

That leaves us with one group, or as I said earlier "ban the broken shit you don't intend to play."

Ban OP/strong champs that you/your team don't intend to play AND your team is not well suited to deal with.

Let's say nasus' buff made him OP at your elo. You would ban him when your team doesn't want to play him. However if your top Lane is showing teemo/garen/cho'gath or anything else that can dominate nasus in Lane and deny lots of stacks, or your team is loaded on peel (e.g. Morgana support, ahri mid, and sejuani jungle) then you should be able to not ban him and pick something that your team struggles more against. There's no sense banning an op pick if your team plans to make a comp that can deal with it well anyways.

E.g. as j4 top my easiest Lane by far (virtually a free win) is Vladimir. I never understand why my allies ban vlad after I've shown j4 top. Post 6 he's literally a minion to me. Even if you're afraid of him mid, id be more than willing to laneswap or just roam on him at 6. It's not only a wasted ban, it's worse because i actually WANT them to make that pick as it's a certain ticket to me getting fed.
