Xerath - My love/hate relationship.

Xerath Xerath. What can i say, i love him, he is my main. He is the only champ that i can pick and always have fun with. He has a high skillcap because of his skillshot based kit, but i don't care. If you can play Xerath, you can play any skillshot champ. I've played a couple games with him, a few here and there, and every game feels just as good as my first one.

Is he a mechanically difficult champ to play, god no. But it always feels so satisfying to hit all three of his Ult shots, to hit a stun to pick of a carry, the full range blind sniper Q to finish off a strangler.

There are many reason why i love him

  • He's forgiving. With his long range poke and mana sustain, he can stay in lane and harass people for days.
  • Yet, he's challenging.
  • Watching people scramble when they see your ult up.
  • Landing your Ult in the fog of war
  • Hitting your ult (all three shots)
  • Having people complement you on your abilities to hit people (consistently)
  • Having the enemy team accuse you of scripting (my personal favorite)

These are just a few of the good things, i could list more.

But there are two big things that i heavy feelings about playing Xerath, not enough to stop playing him, but it's always on the back of my mind.

  • He is super taxing to play.

What i mean by this is that from minute one, to the end of the game, you have to hit skillshots. Super obvious, pretty easy to dodge, telegraphed, skillshots. It, honestly, does get a little tiring after awhile. You can do excellent all game, but in that important moment, if you miss that really needed stun, or miss the enemy carries in a team fight then that all really means nothing.

  • He is not easy to play well

He may not be the most mechanically difficult champion, but often, the difference between hitting a skill shot and missing a skill shot is substantial. Playing against Xerath when he hits skill shots feels unfair. Playing as Xerath when you miss skill shots makes you feel worthless.

This is just my little personal opinion about him. People say that he's not in-meta right now, with all the assassins an high mobility champs. But you learn to deal with it. I love him, and nothing will change that.

Just on a side note, if you're thinking about picking up this champ, and you're reading this. I have one little suggestion, from experience. Ask yourself one question, "Do i play on 100+ ping?" If the answer is yes. Please do yourself a favor, don't get this champ, you'll thank me later.

Xerath Is my main since a long time and will always be, I love his character and Lore (also the new one isn't that bad after all, waiting for the full one).

Right now though he is really unpleasing to play. The new Masteries have left him with nothing good to pick as Keystone.

  • I tried with TLD but that works only if I can land a full combo and afterwards I have nothing to follow with for the kill.
  • I tried DFT but the damage was so abysmal that it wouldn't finish off enemies running away at 1% of their hp unless I was already overfed.

Add to this that AD assassins and other mages got plenty of power and even characters that I used to be able to keep at bay (Talon and Zed for example) now have a free kill on me even before 6 if they manage to land one skill on me and then go for the all-in.

Add to this that now any AP items costs a lot more. I wish he is in the work for the "Immobile Mages" reworks and that they will add a keystone for him as they did for Assassins.

Like 3/4 of what you said here applies to Ahri and I really have to agree.

He is really "high risk, low reward" champion. If you lost your lane-enjoy being useless as he has no damage unless he is fed. You are fed to 10/0 level? Enemy can just jump at you and you cant even oneshot them because your EWQ combo has almost 0 damage compared to other bursts. And his ult is only useful if enemy can't dodge somewhy, if not-good luck hitting at least one ult charge that, again, does 0 damage compared to normal ults that are also easier to hit. Enemy Fiora/Riven/Leesin/Yasuo can counterplay you if they are good, but you can't counterplay them. And same things apply to most other longrange immobile mages

lol not sure what you're complaining about anymore. If your full rotation of spells doesn't kill someone with TLD, then that's not a problem. Typical mid champions all have the non-existent problem you're describing.

TLD is the best mastery by far as of now, it might change when they change balance the keystone masteries. Your E W Q combo is enough to set it off, and assuming you land your E, the W and Q are easy to land afterwards.

If they're killing you before 6, you need to learn to play safer and respect champions with kill potential, which isnt even that high pre-6. You can't expect to auto every minion you want when it puts you in danger.
