The Yasuo Lie

Syrile··49 votes·15,609 views

That Yasuo is a high-skilled champion.... is not really the lie. Even though it is true that he really is not that difficult to play, especially once you get to two items, your feeding becomes irrelevant. And if your teammates play say... Alistar? Nami? Wukong? or any random person with a knockup, you do not even have to land a tornado to do massive damage.

No, the lie is that at high levels, players stop worrying about him. Lolalytics posts an over 56% ban rate for over platinum players with a top-tier ranking for ADC and multiple other lanes he is near the top as well. Yasuo has numerous advantages that negate almost all forms of counter-play.

For example, he has a passive shield that regenerates by moving and attacking. Said shield makes poking him utterly useless. Instead, you have to burst him. But you cannot because he has a wind wall that blocks almost everything, including ultimates on a much longer CD than the wind wall. Oh and speaking for the Wind Wall! Fiora, a champion that actually does require skill, has a tiny duration for her Parry compared to the Wind Wall that just gets larger and larger and lasts longer??? Running from him? Nah, he has a million dashes. Chasing him? The same. Landing a skill shot? Dashes and Wind Wall. Melee? He has reach in his Q, including being able to CS while he is hitting you and then dash away to safety. Armor? Nah, his ulti shreds armor. CC? Just buy QSS and auto-kill anyone that wants to CC you. Ranged? Nope, he has those dashes, wind wall, and even a ranged attack. Outsustain? Nope. Shield plus a complete lack of mana says no. Oh.. and having a tie for the longest CC in the game, with the single most broken CC in the game (knockup) that requires you to use QSS /and/ a movement based ability (yet people complain about champions have a 1 second stun or a suppression that lasts for 2.5 seconds because it cannot be cleansed). Complaint about scaling? What about getting max crit on two items when an ADC requires three or four (soon). An immensely powerful early game followed with a ridiculously powerful 2 item spike, even if he is massively behind is pretty silly too.

Mind, I play a champion that shuts him down hardcore and punish him a lot for picking this abomination of a champion. My winrate vs Yasuo is very high. But I should not have to play one champion to not have to deal with all of this nonsense. Or hope that the person playing them is horrible at him.

Oh yeah... And with current IE and Conqueror.... Fortunately they are leaving.. True Damage on him was even more horrid.

Anyways... The whole point is, the entirety of the kit is clearly toxic. It was built to cause toxicity in the game. Even if it is "beatable" it should require a handful of select champions, or an entire team to play around a single champion that is sooooo popular and overpowered that no matter how good you are, he is toxic enough to be banned in over 50% of games.

It shows a complete misunderstanding of what makes for a fun champion to believe this should exist. The "balance" team really seem to hate the players of this game.

Oh, and I love the concept and idea of Yasuo. Just implemented so poorly...

Yasuo is a toxic monstrosity of a champion that should never have been made. Over half of my bans during my league life are on him. Good luck being ranged or even melee versus a decent Yasuo.

yeah like they care if the game is enjoyable? thats why they overbuffed zed vayne yasuo because they are popular they want money and champions that where not popular but anoying like old fiora maked her more anoying just to be popular champion it seems logic to me riot just want the money they dont try to balance the game they balance theyre money.

Idk why this guy is getting downvoted. Look at the stats. Zed gets destroyed in high ELOs... He's not strong right now

Glaricion3 votes

Zed's still strong, it is just that he is pointless in this meta.

No point in doing 270% of a target's health with a delayed ult combo when damage has crept up so high that tons of other champions can 100-0 their target in .1 to 1.5 seconds.

Z3Sleeper2 votes

While also healing 75% of all damage taken and cleansing themselves Rengar

kargish1 votes

But then you realise using said cleanse and 50% heal means you have to give up 240+1.3*AD damage.

Z3Sleeper1 votes

Give up 240 +40% AD single target damage for 220 AoE damage. The combo is already drastic overkill so losing out on 20 +40% AD in favor of more healing, a cleanse and more AoE damage is worth it.

(Q grants 40% AS anyway so don't go including 100% bATK dmg in RQ as if it's a free extra 100% AD. W gives the burst instantaneously while simply going R Q Tiamat Auto weaves an extra auto in in the same time you'd be able to R Q Q Tiamat)

Trust me, that Ashe isn't surviving a Ult + QW anyway. Plus you will NEVER have time to even double Q OR auto if there's a competent team around that'll instantly CC you during/after the jump.

kargish1 votes

Do you realise it's an auto attack enhancer and therefore automatically have a 1.0 AD ratio added? Ah but yeah you're correct, it's not 240+AD1.3, it's 240+AD1.4, further adding to the damage sacrifice.

I don't need to trust you on anything, I've otp Rengar since his release in 2012, I am well aware what he can and cannot do. Getting off double Q is easy, but if your claim is that it won't happen because your target is surrounded by the enemy team, then do you honestly believe that 1 QSS when building 0 defensive items will save you? Because if you want to get even remotely close to one shotting a squishy with Q+E+W alone, you need old item 3147, pre-nerfed item 3095 and at least 2 levels advantage. Currently you can delete someone at around 60%-70% hp with Q+E+W, if they have no defensives and you're full AD.

Thefrostyviking9 votes

Are you kidding me? Zed getting destroyed?

Sure he does not have a high pickrate sitting only at 5-6% in masters, but he does have 53-54% winrate.

Getting destroyed is something like Amumu with 39,5% winrate and 0,5% pickrate, this champ doesnt even exist in high elo, similar to Gnar and Ornn who have a similar playrate and 42% winrate.

Zed? Zed is a absolute beast compared to them, or compared to Caitlyn who has 47% winrate and 7% pickrate.

This ridiculous Zed bias has really gotten outa hand ._.

ahhhahah i actually loled, but yes, true, although Vayne is one of my mains, she's completely outclassing other carries, the fact that you don't need to worry about armorpen cause you deal true damage allows a smart Vayne player (me) to go invest in defensive items like GA,Merc scimitar, BT etc. so you're basically twice as tanky while dealing more damage than your average carry.

We really understand your problems with this champion. Trust me, you arent the first one pointing it out. But saying he has no counterplay is straight up lying at this point. There is a reason why his winrate is below 50%, why everyone knows the meme of the Yasuo in your team inting and losing the game.

In fact, Yasuo loses to the majority of toplane champions. You aren't forced to play one champ, you can play a lot of champions to win against Yasuo. Riven, Fiora, Darius, Camille, Jax, Talon, Pantheon, Malzahar, Annie just to name a few.

He is a pain in the ass but there is a big enough champion pool to make the enemy Yasuo player suffer! Maybe that way you will have more fun against him?

As I posted in another thread, his winrate in Bot Lane for the average player in platinum or higher is 53.13% His win rate with players in Diamond over 50 games on him is 59.10% That is the problem.

And the comment about no counterplay is not about champions not countering him. It is about the lack of ability to outplay him with champions other than his counters and a few champions that are basically skill-matchups against everyone.

But again, I am not bothered by Yasuo getting picked against me. It is more of a statement at how clearly horrible the champion is. For example, over 56% ban rate with over a 19% pick rate (even with that ban rate) means he is over 75% pick/ban at platinum or higher. That is absolutely ridiculous. His "low" winrate for the ones that are below 50% are because the huge amount of players that play him and do nothing for their team. At 50 games his winrate skyrockets. Not super hard to play fifty games on a champion. And even on average, he is too strong in bot lane. 54% is where Riot used to freak out and gut champions (and then rework them into something worse).

And I know lots of people complain about him and tons of people have a lot more trouble with him then I do. My comment is more that it is a lie to say he "falls off" against high elo people.

HopeStartsWithU1 votes

You are completely right with your statistics and your explanations no doubt.

But 2 problems: 1) There are an insane amount of champs that offer virtually no counterplay. I main Riven and everybody could say (and they would be right about it technically) that Riven has 0 counters simply because she can dash out of every fight. The thing is, certain champs NEED kills to snowball, to scale or to be useful at all.

Yasuo is one of those champs. You deny him gold/kills/cs he will be nullified for a certain amount of time that doesn't mean he shouldnt be able to scale. There are countless ways to do that. And I am sure you know how since you say you don't struggle against him. The game before Yasuo was pretty much just "who counters who" "what item is good against who." And the same thing still applies to Yasuo.

Second problem: The data shows, he is beyond annoying and banned and he is enough loved to be popular but still has a low winrate.

Let's compare him to Lucian right now who is kind of busted right now. High pick rate AND high winrate. That is a clear indication of Lucian being too good at the moment or simply his counters being bad (there are more than one perspective). Yasuo on the other hand doesn't show that indication. He is completely balanced statwise, no high winrate combined with high pick rate and banrate combined with a "simple kit" as you would say (assuming your first sentence isn't a joke to trigger the yasuo mains).

In short, people in high elo actually stomp this guy more than he stomps the enemy. People rather choose not to fight him and avoid a completely uninteractive laning phase. Nobody wants to play against a guy who dashes around, automatically pushing the lane and then dying to a gank over and over again until the game is over. Same with people not wanting to play against Ekko who just uses his Q and shoves the wave or GP using Q and running behind his barrels. These champs aren't as popular as Yasuo is which is why they aren't banned as much.

People hate to play against him or to have him in their teams. He is annoying. He could have a 1% winrate and his pick/ban rate would be high as hell. It's not a lie that he is just "ok" in higher elos.

First problem: Most of the champions with little to no counterplay follow the same line as Yasuo. Most of them are assassin style champions or ones with too many dashes and various protections while having too much damage and a shield or self healing, etc. They all fit the category but they are all worse than him in certain ways.

Second thing: Yes, let us compare Lucian. Yasuo: At platinum and above he has over a 56% ban rate and over a 19% Pick Rate, putting him at over 75% pick/ban. In Bot Lane a 53.13% Win rate. Move that to Diamond with 50 or more games for him his win% jumps to 59.10% with Masters and Challengers having upper 60s and low 70s. Definitely does not fall off at upper levels.

Lucian: At platinum and above has a 37% ban rate and a 30.39% pick rate, so lower priority than Yasuo (and Lucian is considered, as you said, very OP right now). Yet he only boasts a 51.47% win rate. Move that up to post Diamond with 50 or more games he has a win rate of 58.79% win rate with a similar top-end for the highest level players in Master and Challenger.

Lucian is considered OP but can only do this in one lane. Yasuo is played in three lanes (with varying success, of course) and is overwhelmingly banned and has such a high pick rate even with that ban rate that it says quite a lot... Also, Lucian's win % is skewed upwards because of the limited amount of viable ADCs. Also, Yasuo is a counter to Lucian, just to note. One of the very few but... ya know.

I understand everything you say but I don't understand why you implement the 50+ games into the discussion. Someone who is dedicated to the champ, meaning playing more than 5 games on said champ, SHOULD have a high winrate. This is applied to almost every champion.

https://www.leagueofgraphs.com/champions/winrates-by-xp

Even at 50+ ranked games, Yasuo only has a 56% winrate. Compared to Mundo, who has a really small playerbase (or lets say mains because nobody would play more than 50+ games on mundo unless they love him), Yasuos winrate is pretty "ok." Just because mains are doing fine on him doesn't mean he should be gutted. It's just not fair.

He is, stat-wise, balanced. But he is too unhealthy, in a player experience way. Nobody here would say Teemo needs nerfs but everyone (or at least many people especially melee mains) would agree that he is annoying to face. Same goes to Yasuo.

All of the stats I provided are on LolAlytics. The numbers are not incorrect. And providing "50 games" for someone in Challenger is not a lot. Most people who play for even a short period of time play a champion more than 50 games. That is what it generally takes to learn a champion and if the win rate goes up drastically (which I provided already), most champions are nerfed. Not Yasuo.

And his kit is extremely toxic on the whole. Teemo is hated despite having a million ways of punishing him, zero dashes, no ability to negate most skills in the game, no knockup that lasts forever.. and so on and so on.

HopeStartsWithU1 votes

I just take the numbers as correct because I use leagueofgraphs and Riot already said that there are differences so we will never have 100% accurate statistics.

Anyway, that's the point of the 50+ games stat! A challenger player will easily learn/understand a champion while an iron player will struggle badly, meaning they will need a lot more time. Let's say one game goes on for 30 minutes in average, that would make 25 hours of playing that same champion over and over. That's a lot for only one champ and should give enough experience to actually carry some games.

Riot rarely nerfs champions based on their learning curve. People who play only that one champ usually have higher winrates on that champ. Aurelion sol is the only champ that has been nerfed pretty hard because of his mains.

Yasuo has been nerfed a lot of times in the past, not too long ago his third Q, holding the tornado has been nerfed because it was pretty oppressive. He was completely busted at the beginning and they removed a few things from him (example: he has to crit to apply the armor pen, bonus flow on his w) and made him more "friendly". They will change him for sure but they won't take power out of him simply because he isn't op, just toxic. A few patches ago, he even got buffed because he was pretty much garbage for a while.

You did not actually address anything I said though. He is obviously, without question, too strong based on the fact that he has a 75% pick/ban rate in non-professional play. And still has oppressive win% even with all of the bad players playing him.

Nothing about what you have said changes these actual facts.

HopeStartsWithU1 votes

The stats are completely fine. What you don't understand is that after 50+ ranked games any winrate SHOULD be above 50%. It's natural. It happens with every champ. People ban yasuo because he is annoying, not OP. After all his general winrate barely hits 50% if not below. He is completely fine. People who mastered him HAS to climb or the champ would be straight up garbage. His banrate is so high because there are a lot of people playing him. If nobody would like to play him, nobody would have to ban him which is why I made the comparison to teemo before. Nobody plays teemo but everybody hates to play against him. If teemo would be popular his banrate would rise too. It's not rocket science.

These are facts. This is how statistics work. Yasuo, in fact, has a pretty low winrate after 50+ ranked games. You assume someone who is banned or picked is strong. Instead you have to see it like that: Annoying champ OR OP champ? banned. Fun champ and strong/balanced? picked. His winrate isn't high which means he is just fun to play. His banrate is high even tho his winrate is at almost 50% whichmeans he is annoying af

I gave a very clear comparison with Lucian, someone that is almost universally agreed upon is broken. Yasuo has a higher average win rate, a higher pick/ban rate, and a higher win rate (by a tiny amount) at 50 games and scales upwards just fine with the same patter even at really high levels. You keep saying he has this low win rate but I have cited actual statistics you can look up that prove otherwise, even compared to champions considered "op."

HopeStartsWithU1 votes

The point still stands. You compare the wrong statistics. What you compare can only have a positive winrate. The overall winrate which only counts for topics like that is whats important.

Right now Yasuo has a general winrate of 49.3% in plat+. That decides if a champion that is considered "hard" by a few is actually busted or not. The learning curve, in other words your statistic of 50+ games, just shows if a champion is hard to grasp or not. When a champ, like Yasuo, has an overall 56% winrate after 50+ games compared to Camille, who is considered a bit easier and also has an overall higher winrate of 58% in 50+ games then it means that Yasuo is stat wise harder than Camille and also more balanced.

Another example, when champions are released they usually have pretty low winrates then riot overbuffs them then everyone understands the champ and the champ is busted for a long while until the nerfs hit.

You have to understand what statistic means what. Just taking the statistics you favour or support your opinion doesn't mean you are right.

Btw, Camille is also pretty much the same, even though she is pretty much garbage right now STATISTIC WISE. Her kit is solid but she is out of meta for the moment.

And the statistics you provide different from those that I provided. I am not familiar with that website but I am familiar with Lolalytics and op.gg I am not comparing the wrong statistics. You are calling them wrong but still trying to use "win rate" as a reason why he is not a problem? Your argument is self-defeating based on your own claim. At this point you are making the claim that what I say is incorrect because you are claiming win rate does not matter but providing win rate as the reason you are correct. I think I am done with this conversation at this point.

Well, I cannot guarantee that Lolalytics is 100% accurate. Most things probably are not. But generally that site or op.gg tend to be the more trusted ones. I have never really seen League of Graphs be used before and some of the things I see there make me kind of wary... But meh. :)

YEah I don't really know where the notion of him being really hard ever came from.

He's got a lot of mechanics sure, he's essentially the Orianna & Vayne of his class.

He's just a combination of his classes mechanics rolled up into a ball the same way Vayne and Orianna are for ADC's and Mages.

On top of that Riot themselves have stated that Azir AurelionSol and Taliyah are the hardest champions in the game respectively.

On top of that Riot themselves have stated that Azir AurelionSol and Taliyah are the hardest champions in the game respectively.

The notion came from Yasuo mains who want to defend the ridiculous stats and kit he has. He is extremely easy compared to the payoff he gives. Azir is vastly harder, has an abysmal win rate even someone with over 50 games and only the very, very highly skilled players who master the champion can do anything at all with him against a decent opponent. Even then, he is punished much harder for every mistake and is nerfed over and over again, most times at random.

And there are a ton of champions harder to play than Yasuo. It is the second lie. :)

Even a half-brain can play Yasuo now. He is overbuffed. Even if he feeds, he will get to 2 items and do a lot of damage, because his passive is strong.

Fiora, a champion that actually does require skill

this is all i have to say. fiora literally gets everything for free. she doesnt need any skill to play

she actually requires skill to play in terms of timing her engage. late game though 1v2 wise no theres no skill at that point only items talk then.

the only time she needs skill is in team fights because shes so useless in them. u can just Q into the enemy team then W to not instantly die and ur team will hopefully follow up. i dont think she requires as much skill as other champions in the game

your right the timing is vital there. otherwise she gets chain cced.

yeah but thats basically the only thing hard about her. but when u look at champions like kata yasuo or azir they have alot of hard things about them (maybe not yasuo his kinda easy to play but hard to master like riven) they have skillshots or really nard mechanics which makes them hard to master like kata blades or azir soliders but fiora doesnt have that she jut has 1 think that she has to get right once and thats her W
