Riot, the penalty for AFK is not severe enough

Simply put, the penalty for leaving a game/going AFK, especially a ranked game, is not severe enough.

People play ranked games and rage quit, play knowingly with poor internet connections ("Im in a coffee shop, bad connection") , play when they might have to leave for some random reason ("I have to pick my friend up"), their mother makes them quit ("bedtime"), etc, etc.

So why do I think its not severe enough? Look at the punishment:

From http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Leaver_Buster > Punishment (normal match):

  • > 1st offense - Player is unable to join the matchmaking queue for 6 minutes.
  • > 2nd and following offenses - Player is unable to join the matchmaking queue for 15 minutes.
  • > After 5 offenses or more - Player is unable to join the matchmaking queue for 20 minutes.
  • > In addition to the above time penalties if the game was a ranked match, the player loses 3 League Points, for the first offense and 10LP for the second time before the timer reset.

People _still _ go AFK. Simply put, they dont care if there is a 6,15, or 20 minute queue. People complain about those queue times as it is, so what difference does a mandatory 6/15/20 minute delay do? They have no fear of the repercussions, since most of them deal with that queue anyway. And as long as the dont AFK to often, there really is no penalty for doing so.

Ive gotten into ranked games in the last few weeks and is it the most frustrating thing. Close to half my games have people not connecting, or going AFK during the game. _ ** HALF of the games!**_ My provisionals had 3 or 4 AFK players, my promotionals had AFKers. Game after game, AFK.

Yes, /remake has helped with DCed players at the beginning, but it does nothing to help the players after 3 minutes. We get a loss, lose LP and IP and become totally pissed, while the AFKer shrugs it off.

Riot, you have to make the penalty of leaving a game severe enough that people are **AFRAID ** to be penalized.

I think chronic AFKers should be punished more. Cause life does get in the way, and some things are more important.

But if you CONSISTENTLY have something interrupting you, or a poor connection, or just decide to ragequit, then you shouldn't be playing ranked.

So maybe after A LOT (whatever that means to you) of AFK's then you are temporarily banned from ranked. Not long queue times, but BANNED from all games. For a short span the first time you are punished - like a day? Then if you keep consistently leaving, you are banned for a longer time.

the problem is that. if you dc because of their shitty servers or client. you still get punished. which happens too many damn times

I'm not sure how /remake is good because people just blatantly ruined a game that took 20 minutes to queue up for only for me to get stuck in queue for another 10 minutes. Go fuck yourself Riot. Everything you do it is in direct spite of us.. you could solve by simply removing Dynamic Queue and giving the players a choice between Solo/Duo or Dynamic. Then for Solo players, allow a check that lets them allow dynamic 3-5 premades in their games.

I feel you - really i do. I hate it, and the only time I've ever gone AFK was due to a client failure.

However, you have to consider that life sometimes gets in the way of gaming, and there are people who have kids/parents etc that may need attention more than a ranked game does. Is it irresponsible of that player? Maybe. Would I leave the game if something happened to one of my kids regardless of the punishment? You bet your ass. And depending on how severe the penalty was from Riot, I'd have to give serious consideration to whether I'd spend another DIME on this game or not.

You get what I'm saying? Riot has to strike a balance, and I think they're trying to. I just feel like the /remake might not be enough...instead of heavily penalizing the player who AFKs, how about finding when/where it's appropriate to not penalize the shorthanded team? Or, maybe reward the shorthanded team with a small IP boost for the match (whether won or lost), or perhaps a small LP boost if they win a shorthanded game?

I agree with that for people that are afk for the whole game but people thay crash for 5 minutes without any xontrol shouldnt have to wait 100 minutes in low priority queue

Just an FYI, the aspect of leaverbuster you're quoting is for leaving champion select, not the game itself.

I don't know anything about programming, but is it possible to implement a tracker in the software to know whether or not the player chose to exit, to differentiate between leaving and dc'ing? Players could get around it by switching off the router/modem but that seems like much more of a hassle, possibly making it less frequent. Am I going somewhere with this?
