Convenience Change: Champion Select Tabs

This has actually been something I wanted for about a year now but never bothered to discuss it with anyone outside of a small group of people.

Right now in champion select we have two tabs. One tab is for the champions and another tab is for skins. Wouldn't it be convenient if we had tabs for each role and plop champions we enjoyed in that tab?

Similar to how we can create item sets for champions we can also edit what champions we like in each role. When you go to your "Top" tab you have a list of every champion that you can drag and drop into said tab. The same is said for all tabs so you can have Swain in your "Top" and "Mid" tab.

How is this convenient? Every new champion that comes out I can immediately buy with IP and try out instead of waiting for when they are free. So I have EVERY champion. The example I want to give is a time I had to face a Diana mid lane and I wanted to be AP because everyone else on our team was mainly AD. For me, Diana is one of my many banes in the sense that no matter who I play, I will struggle in laning phase against her. So I wanted someone who can farm safely. With 10 seconds to spare and not sure who the best pick would be for our team, I pick Malzahar. After I picked Malzahar I noticed Ziggs and realized THAT is who I REALLY wanted.

Why does this matter? With the example I gave, had I been able to condense the champions I comfortably play mid I can scan my champion pool quickly and confidently and make a choice with more thought behind it rather than constantly scrolling up and down until I see the champion I want to play.

Why not use the search bar? You bring a good point. Useful, but it is easier to make a decision if you visually look at all the champions you enjoy in each role. I can't search "Mid Lane" and get Zed and Swain to pop up. Let alone searching that and having ANYONE show up.

It is a small idea and looking at the champion select interface it always looked like more room was given for future tabs to be added. Allowing us to create as many tabs as we wanted may make the interface cluttered. I suggest 5 tabs with defaulted names being "Top", "Jungle", "Mid", "Carry", and "Support". However the names can be edited to whatever people desire. This allows people who prefer one role to, for example, change names based on utility. Mid laners could have "Assassin", "Wave Clear", "Teamfight", etc etc.

Thoughts?

EDIT: Glad a lot of people enjoy the idea. Very late last night so I got a bit on a ramble.

Thought I should add a few pros and cons.

Pros

  • Optional
  • No impact on in-game play
  • Convenient
  • Helps players see desired champions visually
  • Gives the player more control when selecting their champions

Cons

  • Potential difficulties in coding

Great idea. Seems like it would be easy to implement and i don't see how it would negatively impact other players. It might be helpful to have the same thing when you are the team member banning champs, so you can have your list of "OP" champs ready to ban. I know i often forget who i was going to ban and then immediately remember when the opposing team picks that champ....

It'd be easier and less programming power on Riot's part to just allow for the search bar to search by role like "Support" or "Mage." All this would require is keeping the champions updated on their roles (Looking at you Blitzcrank), and just tagging each champion with the role keywords that would come up in the search. To implement a tab system, it would take a bit more effort to program for a pretty similar result.

The one small change I would suggest from my post is that you have 6 default tabs, with one for your favorite bans. Thank you for posting! This is a functionality is exactly what many of us "fill" mains that like too many champs need.

It's not a bad idea, though most of that functionality already exists.

All champions have tags and if you enter one of those tags (such as marksman, fighter, mage etc) in the search bar, all the champions that match that tag will show up. likewise you could do zed|swain|teemo if you just wanted those three champions to be visible.

The real issue is that Riot doesn't speak up and notify people about these search bar functionality. Some people know just the basics about searching based on champion name. Some know about searching based on tag, but a lot don't know about using | to designate specific champions you want to show up, regardless of whether their names or tags are similar.

this would defiantely be a insanely helpful i would up vote this 100+ times if i could but i can only give u 1 so u get it man UPVOTED and hopefully implemented this would save me so much time when trying to find a champ for a specific role or i could even setup different tabs for different groups of ppl i play with for example with my duo partner i generally only use 2 champs where as with my 5s team for unranked i used anywhere from 5-15 different champs and when i solo ranked or normal i use compleltely different champs in general AMAZING IDEA I REALLY HOPE RIOT TAKES THIS INTO CONSIDERATION

I love this idea. Like you, I have mounds of IP and own every champion and sometimes when I'm hurriedly scanning for, say, AD carries, I miss the one I'm looking for.

I'd just like the ability to sort by roles. Essentially just add an options on top of the current display method that would group champions in categories. All champions would still be displayed, but under 6 different headers (Tank, Mage, Assassin, Marksman, Support, Bruiser).

If we go one step further and allow customization, well then that would be fantastic.

How about instead of lanes for the tabs, it could be like Runes and Masteries, and you could rename each tab to whatever you wanted. You could name them according to lanes, or AP or AD, or assassins... whatever you wanted basically.

As someone similar to the OP who also owns all champions, I fall into similar situations all the time. I scroll up and down the champion list looking for what best suits the situation and what I am comfortable with playing and time is ticking down so I pick something, only to immediately see and realize who I should have picked.

It's not per se, that I'm not familiar with what I am looking for, or my own champion pool or whatever. It's the fact that I'm very visually orientated as a person. Just like with test questions, I have to see it before I can clearly think of the answer.

I would love this. I have experienced the SAME dilemma you have, where I have no idea what I want to play when it comes to the wire, I make a decision, and then I realize I wanted to play something else.

rioters apparently have access to something like this, on phreak's livestream he types in marksman into the little search bar and all the marksman come up. +1 rito for hiding a useful feature.

I will tell you something most people don't know. If you type in a champions name like Zed followed by the | character (the one above your enter key) it will allow you to search for multiple champions.

To elaborate, I have a text document with my preferred champions in mid like Zed|Viktor|Anivia|Fizz and if I copy paste that into the search bar it will give me just those champions to choose from.

The tab idea is still great but this is a solution for those looking for something similar
