I Encourage you to Break the Meta

I apologize for the wordiness but this requires a lot of explaining because of my thought process. So** TL;DR: Find something under-appreciated and attempt to maximize the potential.**

I've been stalking the forums a lot more recently and I see a lot of posts about players saying "X champion is broken" or "Y champion is useless"

What I want to discuss today is being innovative while also making the game fun for you. I make League fun by taking under-appreciated champions/items and trying to make them viable in some way.

Yes, there are champions who perform very consistently by building X way or Y way. Example MonkeyKing can be very consistent by building heavy damage or by building heavy tank due to his flexible kit. But let's try to look at key components of champions and how we can maximize their potential.

Let's jump right into what I mean by using one of my favorite examples, bruiser MasterYi. When I play Yi I too like to build damage to kill people in the blink of an eye. However, I would often GET killed in a blink of an eye. This inspired me to look at his kit and attempt to extend his teamfight capabilities. This caused me to make a build such as this build. I had to face a Malphite top lane which can be devastating for a Yi at any point of the game. I chose to show this match in particular because I remember at one point saying "I think I can take on their team now" over voice chat and proceeded to 1v5 pentakill.

While building I had several things I had to focus on.

  1. Master Yi's active E means I can focus more on the true damage than overall damage.
  2. I need to stick onto the target to maximize #1
  3. I need to survive long enough to maximize #1 for resets.
  4. I need to be able to kill tanks. #1 is the best way to do this.
  5. Since I substitute AD for survival, Atk Speed > AD for his E.

Other things I have tried include (Still highly experimental) item 3285 +Vladimir = your base is your graveyard Main focus was item 3285 because it applies spell effects Garen The wall. Main focus was maximizing his W's passive and causing enemy AD's to kill themselves because Garen's ult scales off of enemy missing health. Early(ish) GAYasuo

However, while experimenting keep some things in mind

  1. Plan things out. Ask yourself what you like about the champion and what you hate about that champion. Maximize the likes while eliminating the dislikes.
  2. You will fail. A lot. But that is part of the process. Trying something new takes time and effort.
  3. People will tell you that you are wrong and that isn't how you play that champion. I use this as fuel to prove them wrong.

Last but not least, have fun. Use your support Leblanc and try that top lane Malzahar. I played Warwick and DrMundo top lane late Season 2 and was told not to. I performed consistently and often won my lane. Season 3 rolled along and they became strong laners. Alex Ich from Gambit told Darian to try WW top because he saw the potential of his kit. That is my goal for you.

Use your supportLeblanc

But like actually please don't. You can fuck over your own lane all you want, but I shouldn't be forced to have my entire early game ruined.

Support is honestly the worst role you can break the meta in, especially if you don't main bot lane. Half of the time you're not going to realize that you just counterpicked us out of the lane, and even when you do realize you will underestimate just exactly how hard we are going to be shoved to turret.

I wouldn't really call a deviant item build 'breaking the meta'

You can build just about anything on any champion if you get a bunch of kills. Running around as a ball of stats is still more effective than running around with half as many items, even if those items are efficient.

I do encourage people to break the meta, but I recommend making sure you know what the 'meta' actually means. It has more to do with how the game plays out, rather than the individual choices you make.

Breaking the meta would be like choosing 5 fighter/tanks and trying to win with your midgame power spike before the enemy team can afford penetration items. Breaking the meta would be like picking 5 assassins and focusing on map control to gain distinct advantages and end the game early.

Breaking the meta is not sending your ADC and support mid. Because you still have a duo lane with a designated support and marksman.

Breaking the meta is not building AD on your malzahar jungle. That's just picking a unique jungler and build inside of the current meta.
