A lot of bad experiences may be due to lack of support mains
We all know by now how dynamic queue works - jungle is hard to get even if it is your primary and choosing fill or support (primary or secondary) lands one the support role an overwhelming majority of the time. This has led to support being a highly demanded role that needs to be filled in order for queue to be achieved. For support mains, this is mana from heaven; it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. Queue times are rarely over one minute and the people playing the other roles are, for the most part, comfortable playing them.
Let's jump back to solo queue in season 5 and back. Support mains still found it relatively easy to land the role but it is even easier in season 6 and does not demand as much time spent in queue. Oftentimes in solo queue there may have not been a person who was comfortable with the support role and everyone spammed mid and top and pick order was king, leaving last pick to play support in these scenarios.
This is what is happening I think in many games now. A person will play support even if they are not comfortable with it simply because they want to play and they want to play now; they don't want to deal with 10 minute+ queue times. Alright I'll admit it I'm pretty much a support main. I sometimes mix it up and for a while I strictly queued as jungle and mid but I have seen more success with the support role.
Here is what I have seen: The enemy support is often leveled much lower than me. I am gold 4 right now and I see a lot of support opponents who are ranked silver 3, 4, or 5. In the grand scheme of things this may not make much of a difference but you can see the subtle differences in knowledge and gameplay. This could be because support gets people queued faster and people duo queue with a friend (who may or may not be a support main) just to get in a game. The support role is vital and when only one component of the bot lane is weaker, it shows.
Another thing I see is people who are ranked around the same level but do not play support that much. In looking at their match history they play more mid, top, or jungle and not a lot of bot lane. In these instances a person may not fully understand what goes into the early laning phase. Sometimes, yes, it is very boring and I can tell this because they will get trigger happy and jump the gun. In this season that hurts because it is very easy to snowball after one mistake.
There are games I lose that just go bad. I mess up or another lane will feed early and it is hard to bounce back. Most of the challenging games I see though are when I face another support main who is ranked similarly. I can tell they have mechanics and they understand the fundamentals of the early laning bot phase.
I see a lot of threads about how dynamic queue is awful, hard to climb, etc. While there are many, many other factors, I think this is a vital one that comes into play. Supports keep carries alive and can make the difference in that last bit of health or that little extra cc that wins games. Without proper support knowledge, games become harder to win and more frustrating when the support role is not strong.
once, and was asked to "stop taking minions." - And this is the kind of stupidity support mains have to put up with. This idiot won't play the role, they won't research the role, and they WILL scream at me about something. But they won't play support. There's a cultural perception that Support gets carried, that support is easy, that support isn't fun, that support is boring. There was some idiot all over the forums 6 to 12 months ago posting "Supports get carried" all the time. And people upvoted him. So frankly, I'm glad everyone's waiting all day. It's apt punishment. You should suffer.
is still a monster waste of money. And a lot of supports have been saying "Why don't you make SS trees like you did for
" and we got radio silence.
supports but they aren't as popular..
