Ranked should be a privilege

Basically, as I see it, the glaring major issue with this game, which has been the issue for at least 6 years, is the frustration around ranked play. Some people are trying to win in a competitive online game, and some people either don't care, or are actively trying to ruin that experience.

This causes a ridiculous amount of frustration, toxicity, and ruins the fun of playing a competitive game. I can honestly say that in all my accounts (ranging from iron to high plat, so still not great) that** if half your ranked games are actually competitive, it's a lot. **

The problem is that nothing prohibits (or even discourages) people from jumping into ranked, trying new champs, messing around, outright trolling, or rage quitting the game. In every elo I've played in, I see this issue, and having two evenly matched team, consistently trying their best to win for the duration of the match, is a rarity.

Therefore, it is my opinion, that changes be made to ranked to create it a privileged queue. Currently, you just join ranked if you are lvl 30 with a certain number of champions. I propose some iteration of the following:

  • To require a certain amount of normal wins with a champ before being eligible to play them in ranked

  • To have queue specific bans for trolling, feeding, or afking.

    • if you rage quit in ranked, you should have a different penalty than norms
    • if you have been reported 3 games in a row for feeding in ranked, you should get a 24 hour ranked ban to cool down
    • if you're found to be reported 3 times for trolling (running around following the jg, griefing your team, etc) then you should have to complete a certain number of normal games to gain entrance to ranked
  • Require a minimum honor for ranked play

  • Have played a minimum number of SR games before playing ranked. (why can someone aram their way to 30 and then jump into a ranked competitive game mode?)

These are just my suggestions, they may not be perfect ideas. However, the idea that there is no stipulations for playing ranked games creates a non-competitive environment for people trying to compete, causing frustration, and the bulk of toxicity in the game.

"To require a certain amount of normal wins with a champ before being eligible to play them in ranked"

While I don't agree with first-timinig a champ in ranked, I also think is a bad idea. If you set the number of required wins too low there will have basically been no point to the rule in the first place, set it too high and you will start to put a strain on people's champion pools-- a lot of champions don't require many games to understand, and people who get autofilled into a role might just get straight up fucked over, not to mention one-trick-ponies.

"To have queue specific bans for trolling, feeding, or afking."

I can get behind this one to an extent-- but the proposed bans you have set should be covered by the 14-day/perma-ban penalty already in place for behavior like that.

"Require a minimum honor for ranked play"

Disagree on this one. Honor can be revoked for many reasons, whilst I myself have never lost any honor, or received any punishment for that matter, I can sympathize with people who have received a strike against them for something they regret doing and intend to change their behavior. I think barring people from ranked based on honor is a bad move. People who are demoted in the honor system already lose their season rewards, I think that punishment is enough.

"Have played a minimum number of SR games before playing ranked. (why can someone aram their way to 30 and then jump into a ranked competitive game mode?)"

Another one I can get behind. Especially that it's not necessarily wins, but games on SR in general before being able play ranked.

I don't really agree with the notion that ranked should be a privilege-- but you have a couple decent ideas that could benefit the system as a whole.

I think ranked solo should be ranked solo only and not solo-duo.

I think this alone would make ranked much more fair. As it will instantly remove boosting.

Some of your ideas have a ground to stand on, but most of them are not very nice. Especially for smurf accounts ( a huge number of accounts in 2019 is not the original account the player started back in 2009)

OP Isn't going to understand why this is getting downvoted by healthy players.

Ranked is to give you a comparison for where you stand compared to other players.

Unless you are in the top 1000 players in the world, that is the ONLY difference between ranked and normal.

For all you "good" players that think weeding the bad players out of ranked will help you climb, ranked is your rank COMPARED TO OTHERS. 54% of the ranked pool are silver 2 or better. If you remove everyone worse than that, all the gold 4, silver 1 and silver 2 player are now your new bronze and iron.

Ranked should be a privilege

It already is. Need to be level 30 with 20+ champions.

Also, your suggestions would solve nothing. Everything that happens in ranked happens because of relative differences between players. Why do you think you see people going 0-13 in Masters just as often as they do in Bronze? They are good players right? So they should not be dying 13 times right? Wrong. They are Master players playing vs other Master players.

Your suggestions would raise the absolute skill level but the relative skill differences between players would still remain. Your remaining hardcore rankers would still feed when they face a much better hardcore ranker. And then we are right back where we started.

You need to come up with ideas that would limit the impact skill differences between two individual players could have on an entire match.
