@Riot Whoever Match Making

Can you put the formula for normal match match making as a response? Explain to me how my silver and unranked team (and one gold) get to go against a Diamond 4/Gold 5 and then right after get placed against Plat3/Gold 2 ? It's pretty ridiculous that I have to get stomped by players that are obviously better. I am "salty" and I have a right to be. I'm trying to play a casual game and when I do I don't expect to face people ranks above me and leagues above my friends. Do you guys take a blind monkey and have it throw darts at pictures of possible opponents or is there some algorithm with logic behind it. I have never had this much of a problem with the automated matchmaking system before this season. So basically if you want to know what I'm asking:

  1. What is the match making algorithm, if there is one.

  2. How are you guys going to improve this system? If at all.

  3. How can I be assured I wont face a Diamond/Plat in my Gold promotionals?

I am very serious about this I haven't a clue as to why this continues to happen, it's a running joke in my friend circle that we'll get placed against a challenger one day since we've literally faced everything up to diamonds in normals.

  1. They will never post the formula. It could easily be abused. Just keep in mind it's a function of MMR (separated by mode!) and a calculated chance of winning. Sometimes, especially at this time of night, they cannot find a team with similar MMR also queued. So they will put you with the closest they can find in a "reasonable" timeframe. The chance of win is taken into account here. Some games you aren't expected to win so the loss of MMR is adjusted accordingly afterwards. And if you win, you get a bigger boost. The specifics are not public and won't be public, though.

  2. They added/adjusted "splashing" of MMR from one mode to the next this season. Otherwise, I'm not sure what else they can do when the cause is that nobody else has a full team playing right now.

  3. You'll be matched with and against the closest the system can do based on who is playing, and the % chance to win and MMR change as a result is calculated based on that.

That said... I agree 5s team MMR is pretty messed up. My one team has low silvers and 1 now-plat player in it (gold 5 when we first started playing as a team). We were constantly playing multiple diamonds & plats in both provisional and post-provisional matches despite getting placed into a bronze league initially. Then sometimes we would play another team with only golds and maybe a silver or two and stomp them. Almost every match was a stomp one way or the other. I realize it takes a lot of matches for your MMR to "settle" where it should be, but this was just crazy. There was no reason to consistently match up against teams with players that were clearly going to win. The team factor does play a big role, sure, but there was always at least 2 lanes that would just get stomped early either way and carry the game. I really wish Riot would adjust their matchmaking routine for teams to better take into account somebody's ranked/normal (whichever is higher) MMR into account. The team with plats & diamonds shouldn't have been put into bronze in the first place, and everybody else that played against them knew that. They shouldn't have to grind at all to get to gold or higher.

Also, normals MMR is pretty messed up now. The preseason is discouraging a lot of higher elo players from playing since it's not "settled" well yet, or they haven't adjusted to it yet. Those players' normals MMR is significantly lower than their ranked MMR because they don't play normals often. It's resulted in the vast majority of my recent matches being silvers and maybe a gold or 2 against plats and diamonds. Almost every match has a 200-450 (ranked) MMR difference. But since it's normals, the system is seeing my team as having similar MMRs. I wish I could say I'm pulling in plats and diamonds to a low/mid silver match, but I'd have to be DoubleLift. Unfortunately, I'm nowhere near that elo.

This happens often though. Usually we don't do horrible in normal matches, though I would say our win % is near 50%. I'm Gold V and the next highest player is Silver V.

That being said, this happens at all hours of the day and even when we're not paired with each other. For example, my Unranked (not even level 30) friend paired with my Silver friend and they went against some Golds. In normal/causal matches a single player can change the entirety of the game. That's something you learn just to get past Silver 1; that every player counts especially the one that is 8/1/3 (simulated score).

That being said I, being the Gold V, had to go against a Diamond IV player. That's an entire *League and Division higher than me. I'm in the top 26% of players and this person was in the top 0.5% of players. How is that balanced? On top of that my Silver friend was going against a Gold. That's two lanes completely out matched.

They should not have to have a 5 premade go against a 5 premade if the MMR difference of a single player is half the team's added MMR. Instead they should just find some low Silvers and a Gold. I don't care that we have 2x Un-ranked 2x Silvers and 1x Gold, I will happily face 4x Silvers and 1xGold but going against 2x Unranked 1x Gold and a 1x Diamond that's not even remotely fair nor entertaining. On top of ALL of this both matches it was said that the unranked and silver accounts were only smurfs, a Riot employee can fact check that in the in-game chat logs, so that wasn't even balanced.

It does happen often, especially right now as I noted in my previous response. Lots of players that don't play normals often are now playing normals.

There's a huge difference when playing with 5 people queued together. The system sees it as a team and (almost) always matches you only with other 5 man premades. The coordination of an entire team just isn't something you can calculate compared to a non-whole-team premade group. That part I understand. However, I noted the same issue as you with the whole team premades having MMRs that are way off.
