I can't speak to many of the other champions. I know we are fairly inconsistent with things like base stats (I'm not personally a fan of that).

But Zyra specifically has:

A lot of reach - You can spam plants to deal damage for you from very far outside almost anyone else's range.

A lot of crowd control - Her E is an almost 2 second long root and spawns a slowing plant, completely unblocked by minions. This has about 1,000 range I believe. Her R is a gigantic knockup that you also can't chase through. You can theoretically dodge away, but if you're running at her, you're pretty much guaranteed to eat it.

So because she's long ranged and hard to reach, the compromise is that if you manage to dodge her stuff and catch up to her, you're pretty much ensured the kill. If she were long ranged, could easily inhibit your progress, AND was fast, I'm not sure there'd be anything you could do about her.

To speak to the other champions you listed at least a little:

Syndra has a similar set of mechanics to Zyra - Long range, lots of safety tools. She's only 5 MS higher, so that's not far off. Zyra is a bit longer ranged than Syndra, so I can see this being somewhat fair.

Malzahar has rather short range. He also has no crowd control unless he's channeling it. I think it's totally fair to give him high move speed for a ranged champion.

Akali is melee. Totally fair, IMO.

Annie has no long-ranged tools at all. She can stun, but she's hard capped in her range. She's somewhat on the high end of movespeed for a ranged champion, but she's short ranged (for a ranged champion) so this is fine, IMO.

Heimerdinger is an oddity. He doesn't keep people at bay very well, but he has plenty of long range tools. I don't know why his move speed is as high as it is.

How so? Syndra W have better range than Zyra and she can stun with it which is way more powerfull than root and on top of that her ultimate can insta kill Zyra. There is nothing fair over here. Unless you are talking about AOE dmg, but to be honest I still belive that everything is in Syndra favor.

Malzahar has rather short range. He also has no crowd control unless he's channeling it. I think it's totally fair to give him high move speed for a ranged champion.

Yet with his Q he can do a lot of serious damage, farm safe and then he have voidlings to follow him around.

Akali is melee. Totally fair, IMO.

Again - how so? Akali is one of assasins that can get back to game from any point. Her ultimate give her way too much mobility with almost no cd and resets on assists and kills which happens every time she go in. Then she have that stupid cloud that last forever and is hard to counter until level 9, when you can get Oracle - since Pink Wards are too fragile and expensive to counter her well.

Annie has no long-ranged tools at all. She can stun, but she's hard capped in her range. She's somewhat on the high end of movespeed for a ranged champion, but she's short ranged (for a ranged champion) so this is fine, IMO.

Her movment speed is fine. She is super strong, but it's your own fault if you don't pick someone long ranged to shut her down.

Heimerdinger is an oddity. He doesn't keep people at bay very well, but he has plenty of long range tools. I don't know why his move speed is as high as it is.

Cause it's Heimerdinger.

Goddamit it would be nice if Riot could consider a little more factors than ranged/melee.

I don't know how to format your post like you did.

You can't argue MS because one champion has one skill with better range than another. Syndra's stun takes some planning to set up, and she has to position to get it right. Her ult killing Zyra has nothing to do in this context. Zyra and Syndra are really different, but the point is that Zyra can kite someone really well if done right. Her MS is slow to reward players who can get past her plants/snares.

Malz Q has a long delay and is hard to hit. If you're talking about using his E to farm, it causes him to push. Malz has no escape, and no lockdown CC (aside from his ult, but that also immobilizes him). I don't know what point you try to make when you mention his voidlings.

Recovering as Akali is difficult, because if she's too behind then it's hard to pick up kills against a well coordinated team. Her ult gives her incredible sticking power, but realistically, she needs at least two stacks (almost always three) to kill someone, unless you are that far behind. She needs resets because she has no reliable escape as an assassin. Shroud lasts 8 seconds but has a 20 second cooldown. You can always buy pink wards for 100g, and place it when a jungler ganks. You don't just buy a pink and then drop it in lane for her to kill.

This just in, burst mage has burst.

Heimerdinger. Yeah.

You don't understand the clear advantage that ranges have over melee. The reason why most melee champions have high base MS is because if they had the same MS as ranged champions, they would be kited all day. It is the least compensation melees could get.

VDc0zCqe0w1 votes

while i agree on most of the things, i don't agree on the "only 5 MS higher" about Syndra

5 MS is not "only", it's "alot", it's vital to any non-mobile champ with an unsafe laning, and Syndra has got no cast-time on any one of her abilities, while Zyra has cast time on everything except her W (her passive has an horribly long cast time, feels horrible to use)

when you were talking about Lux being too safe in early S3, the first thing you did was cutting her MS from 340 to 330, and that was 100% right

yet Zyra has 325, 5 less then a nerfed Lux wich was already too safe while having 340

P.S. have you given up on mid lane Zyra? i don't actually mind honestly, i enjoy support Zyra more than mid lane, i'm just being curious since you upgraded her recommended items

i would actually be happier if you told you gave up on mid lane cos it's harder to balance a champ around 2 positions

Syndra is 10x more deadly than Zyra in mid overall . If Zyra was even in Syndra's level she would be played in the LCS which you don't see due to the fact that Syndra causes hard CC and the fact that she can delete a champion with the point and click ult easily if played correctly. True that Zyra has a longer range than Syndra but remember that Zyra is more squishy compared to Syndra.

Regarding to heimer's situation, are you saying that heimer will be probably nerf'd? I've never actually seen a heimer vs zyra play.

I remember the reasoning for giving Velkoz high base movement speed was because he has no repositioning/mobility tools in his kit. Why is it that a long ranged mage such a Vel gets high base movement speed but for the same exact reasons Zyra gets lower movement speed? Seems inconsistent to me.

Very inconsistent like Shen and Yasuo having the same range on their Q's whereas shen's Q suppose to be a range projectile while yasuo's Q is just a jab. And again I know shen is a Tank but logically speaking he doesn't look that heavy and ever Malzahar has 5 flat more than Shen's 335. Shen is in dire need of help :'( you guys gotta asses him. A lot of cheaps champs are genuinely is to control and do their job but shen just is hard to do for the average player, even pro' shave a hard time with this tank that's why he is soo underplayed.

Then how do you explain Velkoz, Brand, Xerath? Each have 340 move speed, long range and CC. If they can have it why not Zyra?

Kowe The Ewok5 votes

You are ignoring the conditions:

Her E has to be maxed to have the 1.75s duration. It starts with 0.75s which barely interrupts movement. It has a bad hitbox and low projectile speed. Morgana's Q starts with 2 seconds, has a long range and faster travelling time. Yes, Zyra's E has the potential to root several enemies, but even when you Flash E the projectile speed is so incredibly low that enemies who are 500 units or further away still easily dodge it.

Also note that her slow-plants are an ability on their own. They are her W and have a freakingly long cooldown. It's unfair to say that the plants are part of the power of her E. That's like assuming Anivia E would always deal the double damage. I would rather shift this persepective, saying that her W is useless you "waste" the cooldown of another ability to trigger them (opportunity cost: the ability could have been used on an enemy)

You are also ignoring that the knockup on her ultimate has an incredibly long windup. Since 2 season now most champion have gotten mobility loaded in their kit. Actually knocking up an enemy with all these dashes and Flashes is close to a miracle.

P.S: Other topic "Heimerdinger has plenty of long range tools"

  • His towers have 450 range, which is basically nothing
  • His W has a high range but a flat 11s cooldown, not reduced by leveling the ability. It is delayed and only deals full damage in a very, very, very specific area
  • His E has 925 which is 25 above average projectile range, HOWEVER it has one of the lowest travelling speeds ingame (even worse than Zyra E) and a whooping 18s cooldown which makes it the possibly most inconsistent ability ingame

So while the statement "Heimerdinger has plenty of long range tools" isn't directly false, it ignored difficulty and frequency with which they can be use.

For comparison Zed can use W+Q as often as Heimerdinger can use his E - with a total range of 550+900 = 1450 at no mana cost. If you say "Heimerdinger has plenty of long range tool", what does Zed have?`More than plenty of long range tools?

Imho casting frequency is a really important factor. What is long range good for if the ability is incositent and has a long cooldown?

But sorry, I drifted off. This topic is not about Heimerdinger :)

I've Read Phreak and Zyra, and said, what!? I'll go there to leave my +1. And I was disappointed.

All Zyra's skills have delay and are skillshots, specially slow, long range E. New meta (post season 3) super mobile champs. Lot's of champs with damage mitigation tools. Zyra damage is good, as Zyra main, 75% of the games I'm maximum damage dealer on both teams even when I go AP support. I Wouldn't ask any buff other than those 5 MS.

Syndra. Spammable Q, Slow, stun and targetable instant kill ult. Can be avoid by Zhonia? true, Zyra's whole combo can be avoid by Zhonias and her CDs late game are longer.

Malzahar. MS? He can combo and go under his tower while farming a wave. His ult and Q have quite decent range. His only problem is his ult, that makes him super strong while laning or on 1vs1, but on tf can be from weak to useless since you are suppressing the enemy and yourself basically.

Annie, she has spammable stun, short range, true, and I'm not saying Annie is too strong, but she can just tibber stun you and finish you off with rest of her set.

Akali. Phreak, common. If you are on R range with 3 charges, Akali doesn't even need MS...

Heimendinger. Funny champ, but not for serious players. I can't compare him with any champ, because I don't even feel his kit synergizes anyhow.

Yeah it's 1.75 and there's a tenacity potion now < 3 which also stacks with the merc boots if you get those lol. Also, if you miss your snare, you're most likely gone and probably don't want to waste your ult xD. Speaking of her ult, a lot of Champs can get out of it before they're knocked up :/. Plus, her plants aren't that reliable since they seem to have a mind of their own at times and randomly either switch to a minion or just start attacking one right off the bat o-o andddd her snare missile speed was nerfed since she's in the support role >.>. Can we bring her back to mid now please? ^_^

Any comment on vladimir? He has shorter range on both his spells and auto attacks than malz, no cc unless he pops his escape ability and 20% of his health for a small slow, and yet has less ms than both heimer and malz, when they have a suite of longer ranged attacks as well as cc and indirect damage.

For the champions you listed;

Syndra: My guess is that she's also a fairly immobile mage who's CC is much more conditional; still, her stun is super potent and she does have no cast animations for the most part, so I don't think it'd be too bad to have Syndra's MS knocked down, though I don't see it as too necessary.

Malzahar: Similar to Syndra; also you see a lot of immobile mage characters (ie. Xerath, Vel'Koz) with this base speed.

Akali: She's melee...

Annie: She's relatively short ranged; most Annie players run MS in runes and masteries as well since she doesn't even get enough in her kit.

For Zyra though, it's on par with Orianna's and most ADCs, and she does have the advantage of having 25-50 more AA range than most mages.

yea but orianna has a boost of movement speed in her kit .-. and you forgot about heimerdinger

MrBuffington5 votes

I didn't forget; you added Heimerdinger after I posted, but in his case, he's also fairly short ranged and must rely on his turret placement, which gives him a fairly limited zone of influence, and his zone is much more immobile than Orianna's or Zyra's

And Zyra has (like I mentioned before) 25-50 more AA range than most ranged champions, a long range AoE snare as a basic spell, and one of the best disengage ultimates in the game. My point is that we can go back and forth for days listing out specifics of a certain champion's kit as a method of establishing why a champion is balanced in the way that they are; I think it's more valuable to look at an overall champion's theme or role. Orianna and Zyra are two champions that rely on exerting very powerful zoning from long range, as such it doesn't seem necessary that they have a lot of mobility, or, if they do, it costs a lot (Orianna loses a lot of mana and damage if she uses her W for a speed boost). They're long range control mages, they don't need to move around a ton. You can bring up Azir's MS (335), and although I think Azir is insanely overloaded, I can argue that he's halfway between a control mage and a marksman, where he needs to be able to kite effectively and thus needs the extra movement speed, as oppose to other control mages who don't need to right-click as much. I'm not saying Zyra should have specifically 325 MS, but it should be on the lower end of the spectrum due to the nature of her kit.

lol because a random Diamond player is always correct. Zyra's been a top tier support for over a year now, you don't see her a lot because she's not god-tier thus pros don't play her as often, thus normal players don't play her that often. botlane is safer compared to midlane where you're alone, so the AA is cool in botlane, but is pointless in midlane if it's not paired with a good MS (see Annie)
