It could help it get picked a bit more if it had a better build path because right now I only really see 
getting it. While 
seem to be getting picked on a lot of different champs 
just seems to be the ugly duckling to these nice additions. Don't let it stay ugly

Sterak's Gage is good on many champions who build Trinity Force or Iceborn Gauntlet.
The only real issue is that other items may take priority in their builds, so it will often not be built until the champion's third or fourth item. Since many games end before that point, it isn't built as often as other items.
Then you would lose even more bonus AD after completing it. It's already a weird item in that once you combine the long sword and giants belt, your abilities that scale only with bonus AD actually get weaker.
It's a much better second buy on Mordekaiser because he easily synergizes with it the most (high base AD, shield passive)
it's okay on Darius but I think he wants an item that grants both health AND armor or MR first. I get it when I'm ahead as soon as I can though, since I've been rushing Triforce on him anyway, it helps me out a lot
