Why do people fight unwinnable battles?

No, seriously. Why? This happens so often that I know many of you reading this post do this on the regular. Why do you do it?

When the enemy Xayah is 11-2 at 18 minutes into the game and you try and do a clever little ambush by yourself in the jungle as she walks by, why do you spam ping me with question marks as I head the other way? She just literally two shot you. The only result of me being there to participate in that massacre would be Xayah leaving with 300 more gold than she already is. So why did you try and fight her?

You see that Fiora? The one that just murdered the Malphite in less than five seconds without using her ult? Yeah, you wont be faring much better than he did, Mr Mastery Level 3 Yasuo. But please, suicide yourself and say "Team????" after she sticks you with the pointy end.

Yeah, they're getting Baron. No, we shouldnt try to stop them. Why not? Because their Brand is 13-4, our jungler is dead, our bot laner is stopping the super minions from killing our Nexus Towers, and you're playing Garen without a single defensive item. But I dont know why I'm wasting my breath, we all know you'll charge in 1v5 and die instantly for no reason. Why? Who knows?

Their Azir has killed you 1v1 three times in the past five minutes and is now two levels and 38 CS up on you. So why in the world did you think tower diving him alone was a good idea? Also, why did you expect me to abandon de-warding the Dragon pit to come help you in your suicidal quest? Why did you think that the fourth 1v1 between the two of you would end any differently?

It seems like people dont quite understand that if you cant win a fight, the solution IS NOT to fight anyway and hope for the best, the solution is to play defensively and hope to farm enough to get back on even footing. Sometimes you cant save towers. Sometimes you need to give up Dragon. Sometimes the ADC cant be saved, and you shouldnt throw your own life away fruitlessly trying to rescue him from himself.

This isnt even a rare thing. This happens in almost every game, where our bot lane feeds the enemy ADC 3 kills and refuses to play defensively from that point on, snowballing the enemy ADC even further while raging at the jungler. Or the top laner wins a lot of trades against the enemy top, so they shove into their tower and sit two inches away from it and act surprised when they get ganked, only to do it three more times and never think "Gee, maybe I shouldnt shove the lane so far if I'm getting camped".

So why? Why do you fight when you cant win? I just dont understand it. I even tell my teammates to play safe and not take risks and they do it anyway. Stop playing aggressively 100% of the time. Stop throwing yourselves at the enemy when they dont even need half their team to kill you. Stop trying to 1v1 a 6-item Master Yi as Sona.

Just. Stop.

It's Riot's own fault for pushing the LE EBIN OUTPLAY and MUH COUNTERPLAY memes. Riot don't understand their own game and all of their buzzwords weave a narrative and paint a picture of a game where a severely disadvantaged opponent can skillfully outmaneuver a statistically stronger foe.

Edit: and also nobody "plays safe" because being told to play safe may as well mean stop playing the game. People intrinsically want to proactively be doing things. Sitting behind tower sneaking a few CS a wave when it comes to you isn't fun. Being told to "play safe" is like being asked to AFK.
