Support "tanks" are not real tanks since they can't farm so they can tank for the team, they mainly provide engage at most but they cant soak up as much as a top lane tank with items, They cant buy item 3143 item 3065 item 3742 etc because they have to invest in item 3401 item 2303 item 3190 item 3107 etc and also is forced to duo lane + roaming so they fall behind in level + gold compared to the top lane Poppy who will be unkillable mid game.

Another issue is they get poked by Malzahar Zyra Brand Velkoz and they will lose more xp and gold in lane since they HAVE to take hits for the carry. AT most late game they end up someone who can catch someone out and CC them OR peeling when its the actual job of the farmed tank to take hits from a team

is Leona or Braum going to engage and soak up a full AD leathlity team? no they will die instantly do to being 3 levels bellow them .

I mean nothing is stopping you from going item 2303 to full tank, sure you're behind in gold, but late game comes, everyone is full build or near full build, and you'll have like 40 less resistance on average while maintaining about the same amount of health, if you're team get's ahead you'll easily rack up gold from assists, if you're behind, it's harder to be tank

Everyone is full build 30 minutes, Support tanks are around 50 minutes.

Being full build at late game for a tank is like getting your triforce on Irelia 30 minutes in: you've well missed your powerspike.

This guy gets it, and for that you get an upvote.

this, and that tank supports only get short windows of tankiness from their kit, which a lot of people dont seem to understand.

Leona 's W Braum with shield up, Alistar with ult on, etc. they briefly become about as tanky as top/jungle tank, then it ends and they explode

I would leave this to pick order and team composition.

If I pick first, I get my choice of role, no matter what lane I'm in.

If I pick last I have the best opportunity to both counter my opponent and pick a team need. If I pick last and my team needs a tank, then I tank. It doesn't matter what lane I'm in.

That's great and all. But given the shortage of Support mains, we really can't expect the person being autofilled to support, to own or be proficient with a tank support in particular.

Also, if you expect the person with half the XP and no gold to be the team's tank. You pretty much done goof. Personally I find Tank supports better as a supplement to the real tank on the team. If an enemy Diver slips past your Tanks engage, a good tank support can peel them off your carry. But don't expect that same support to be able to engage himself.

NoPaxt3 votes

I've made that argument in the past, but it's wrong. Supports can tank quite proficiently with their limited gold.

Heroquet3 votes

You can tank or engage as support, but there is a world between a braum / leona / taric going close to the ennemy team and a poppy / maokai / naut top doing the same thing. The farming tanks can stand way longer, and their uptime (having loads of tankiness before the ennemies get %pen) is larger too.

Alistar can go in and play the full damage sponge all game long, but he explodes quite fast without his ult.

But yeah, they can do the job. They just need a faster follow-up. It's more about timing.

The best thing about tanky supports is when you play them in stuff like hexakill. There you get as much gold as everyone, and then everything becomes stupidly easy because you're used to work with mode hardcore's budget most of the time.

It has nothing at all to do with pick order or countering. A support cannot and will not ever tank as well as an actual farming solo laning tank will--especially if they have to be the only tank. It is ineffective to expect a support tank to tank for an entire squishy team of glass cannons that expect you to soak all the damage for them on low income, or no income if youre behind. It's unreasonable to think "let the support do that job because i dont want to" in addition to everything else the support has to do which is enough already.

As it stands right now melee tanks are unfavorable to the bottom lane meta of poke casters.

Some supports can tank just as well as top laners(Naut,Alistar) but I understand most supports are just utility.

This is my perspective and personal experience as a support main:

1

i can only do X amount of things at any given moment.

2

tanky supports are more limited with the amount of things they can do than caster supports

3

teams where the support is the sole tanky front line require the support to do more things at the same time than teams where the top lane or jungle are the front line.

4

squishies a lot of time can't do shit without someone else doing the heavy lifting for them

conclusion:

if i have to do more things because of the team composition, but i am forced because of same composition into a pick where i can do less, and at the same time my team mates take picks that are dependent on me, that is a recipe for a loss.

Most tank supports are based as support first tank second, We have a smaller operating budget and have to rely on our team for tossing in their cc and dps at the right targets at the right time. Where as a top lane tank has a higher budget, more armor, more MR, and more HP so they are all around better choice. Not saying in a pinch a tank support couldn't work, but only if their team is on the ball and not hyper focusing on racking up kills.

Purpl3Jungl31 votes

they can be tanky, they cant be like say a DrMundo tank who mid/late is practically unkillable.

Ur right and id love to have a team player like you in my queue man goodjob. There are plenty of good support tanks in case jg wants to go for hyper ad. and top goes Quinn or tf or some odd shit. theres mord, tahm and malz sup op lately even though not tank. S& supports jus selfich that's why bot can make or break games

My win rate is 0% when I switch to Leona because someone is whining about how we need a tank support. Tank supports can be effective, but not when your teammates are spineless whiners who need someone else to face all the danger for them (and essentially fight their battles for them). You do a lot of staring down the whole enemy team while the rest of yours, the people who so desperately needed a tank support to go in for them, are scattered around the map doing... whatever it is they think they're doing.

back when i was trying to learn leona is normals, I went on a 14 loss streak, feeding at 0.2 kda or lower every single game and ended up getting matched with bronze 5 players. went mid to carry myself and recover my MMR, n i feel so bad for the people i've stomped in that process

I think it takes surprisingly a lot of experience to know when to engage and when to watch, but i see what u r saying. i still suck at landing my E when i know when to go in, however

Supreme Senpai691 votes

I know a lot of others have differing experiences, but mine is that I cannot play tanks in solo queue. Just can't trust my team to do anything with my engage. I'd rather just poke from a distance; most of the fights that happen in my elo are just people dancing around and staring at each other across the lane, waiting for someone to engage but it never happens.

but shaco is an excellent tank

instead of 1 with his ult you get 2 !!

just need ivern and daisy in there and voila 4 tanks on your team

It's not the supports job to tank

You're right. It's the support's job to fill all holes in the team's comp, game play, builds, and individual skill. They are to blame if the team is anything less than perfect (Still jungler's fault).

The sooner they accept being the team's worthless slave, the sooner we can carry them up the ladder (Rito knows they're incapable of climbing otherwise).

If the only Tank on a team is the Support, chances are that team has already lost. It's very easy to play around Tank Supports because of their peeling-based abilities. Forcing them to engage will leave their ADC with little protection because the rest of the team are squishy DPS champs.

Thanks for reminding me that bronze mmr still hasn't progressed past "WE NEED TANK".

Big Lincoln1 votes

but I aint picking a tank

xScarfy1 votes

Its not just the job of the support...it all depends on the situation. If the support is last pick and the rest of the team decided to pick squishy champs than it might be the best choice if the support picks a tank, how ever if top is last pick and his team still lacks a tank than the toplane should pick a tank...same with jungle. So yeah it all depends on the situation.

BeatzBoyFTW1 votes

Sigh....of course, there's this one ultimately sad guy who has such a high desperation to pick Lee Sin no matter what, even top lane. What a jerk.

tanks are so shit right now you dont need em anyways so whats the issue here

Linna Excel1 votes

First you get autofilled to support, then you get told to pick a class you won't have the XP and money to do well with. No wonder people hate it.

Skorch1 votes

I mean it IS the supports job to tank. Sort of... Its about balancing team comp, different lanes have different options. But you should pick for what your team needs.

Thalassa1 votes

But the meta right now is mostly squishy supports... Zyra Karma MissFortune Malzahar Lulu

Skorch1 votes

True but supports CAN tank

Thalassa1 votes

They can, but it sadly isn't strong atm; they dont have enough gold to itemize at the speed a tank jungler or toplaner would (or mid Chogath ) So usually it doesnt work out. I miss the days of being able to pick my Leona and not getting blown up by a Brand

Skorch1 votes

While yes it isnt meta. i would rather have a Alistar or Taric than 5 damage champs.

The Trent1 votes

It's not a support's job to tank, but if you don't have these items item 3190 item 3107 , which basically make every champ into a tank with decent timing, I'm questioning why not. It makes sense if you have an ivern jungle so you don't need to, but otherwise you're relativity tanky. Sightstone helps a bit too.

AyoLiko4201 votes

actually ur job is to support ur adc and team so who better than a tank.... blitz, thresh, alistar, it may not be ur "job" but if u see the team lackin a tank u be the tank smh. S7 and the lazy supports thtat like to roam and ks smh

Who needs tanks in this meta lol. The past 8 games ive been on teams of all squishy and we've won every single one.

LuIu1 votes

It's really annoying, I only play squishy supports and I hear 'tanky sup plz' alot. Kinda how adc's sometimes expect the support to adapt to what marksman-champion they pick(even if I get to lock in my champion first).
