I've got three perfect Riven counters

Jax - Auto-attacks? I'll dodge them.

Renekton - Early game? lol

Aatrox - Sustain? All of it.

Oh wait, GD nerfed all three into unviability. Welp.

All aboard the Riven QQ train! Choo Choo!

Clarification: I was pointing out that Riven wasn't popular before her biggest counters were nerfed

Riven never showed her face when these champions were dominant. Jax was THE hyper carry top (this would have been a free win lane) and Renekton won game long before Riven ever scaled. Aatrox did Aatrox things before he was gutted.

This is what happens when your balance system operates by gutting whatever GD is currently whining about before eventually reworking them a year(s) later. Aatrox Veigar Cassiopeia Yorick

CYCLICAL BALANCE kiddos. Only the tallest nail gets the hammer.

Edit2 - I am well aware that Garen counters Riven. In fact, the whole point of the post is that I don't feel Riven needs nerfs and that even if she did, it's only because GD's terrible sense at balancing removed a lot of her competition.

Renekton is viable, lol.

Renekton and Jax are totally viable lmao..

Renekton is a counter to Riven, indeed. The problem is how much Riven outscales him during mid/late game.

Jax and Aatrox are in no way counters to Riven. She can destroy both during the early game. Aatrox's sustain is massively overrated; he needs to auto-attack things to heal, and Riven can zone him from auto-attacking. As for Jax... His early game is weak. If Riven manages to take advantage of this, she is set.

joke about ekko later (but unincluded), I think Jayce is a riven counter because of his range and burst damage, but idk. Mundo can poke her but not do much else. Reksai can hit the whole minion wave but she's not as tanky as she used to be unless she's built tank.

How to counter riven:

Step 1: Pick Garen Step 2: Step 3:

As someone who has 150+ garen games on a d1 smurf i have literally not once lost against a riven. You have to misplay something terrible to lose that lane, i garentee it.

Please don't laugh at me, but whenever I saw Riven, I'd take Sona into her. The poke was too much.

But that was a while ago. No idea how her Qs hold up nowadays in solo lane.

i wouldnt say garen counters riven.

a well played riven vs a well played garen is a skill matchup. she has a lot of tools in her kit to kite him around and poke at him. for example if you just run at riven with decisive strike, shes just going to either e away at the right moment, absorbing the damage with her shield, or trigger her stun to disengage. the same goes for the spin.

garen has the problem where when his q and e are on cooldown at the same time, after she dodges those abilities with her w and e, she can turn on him and spam q, and he doesnt have anything left to fight back.

its just that the average guy who plays her, doesnt play her smart enough. but if both players are competent, they should be on equal ground early on. its all a matter of paying attention to each others cooldowns and seizing windows of opportunity. if either one is stupid enough to use one of his cooldowns to waveclear, it leaves him wide open for aggression.

i would say however, if neither snowballs, garen should get ahead at some point during midgame, when it comes to 1v1ing the riven. however, shes much more dangerous to your teammates in larger fights and skirmishes. if you slip up, shes gonna hop past you into your team and kill 2 of your squishies before you can react.

Aatrox has never been very good against riven though.

More Riven play? Sounds like fun! Garen

Jax never beats Riven before 9. Rene is skill match up. What Aatrox will do vs Q-AA-Q-AA-W-E (away) -Q-AA (if Aatrox trying to follow) combo? Nothing. Veigar? Is it joke? Cass can be good, however this is still skill matchup. Yorik will go out of mana, Riven will never. Garen is still beatable. Plus Riven can afk farm and get back.

Riven never was on top before not because of Jax, but because Ryze was countering her very hard.

The best Riven counter. Perma-ban her until Riot is forced to nerf her.

jax still does the lane fine. Its funny whenever i see a riven on the enemy team and i pick jax the riven will just change her shit to jungle. The matchup itself can go either way but for whatever reason many Riven's are afraid of Jax's. Garen works amazingly well, cho gath wrecks, Im sure renekton is fine, irelia works, and challenger-smite trundle straight up takes a dump on Riven's chest.
