When I saw the riot announcement I got really excited about it and when I went forums/reddit to read about it, I seem to be the only one excited...

Yes.
I think it depends on the person and their involvement w/ LOL. I fucking love this game and spend a whole bunch of time playing it. However, I've got a very small group of people that I duo w/ because they're all people who I randomly met in games. Not a single one of my real life friends plays league so when I'm doing social stuff I go play basketball, shoot pool, or hit up happy hour for some queso and margaritas for my friends (I'm always DD bc I'm kind of uptight about a sober driver since my dad killed someone in a drunk driving accident).
However, I'm a huge introvert so it drains me to be social and I need down time and to be by myself to recharge and thus I play league a lot bc it let's me do that. I mostly play solo since there are only a few people I duo w/ and they aren't always on, plus part of what league is for me is time by myself to just do something fun. Knowing that I'm gonna be at a big disadvantage in climbing the ladder this coming season fucking sucks, but I can definitely see people who have league as a large part of their social group being really excited about this change. I just don't think it's good because it will be hard to balance, and with the number of players w/ multiple accounts it will be pretty easy to have friends who are higher rank carry you above your ELO/MMR and then when you solo que you hurt your team and my ranked isn't just harder vs coordinated opponents, but possibly involves weaker teammates who were carried because they can 4 and 5 man que.

I'd imagine people are just overreacting to it. Just watch, about a week or two after it's put in people will quit complaining about it.
You're not the only one. Just one of the only ones who will take to the boards about it. The people who will login to comment are usually the ones who have some faulty argument to say why it shouldn't happen.

I think it's a "good" idea, and I assume it's going to have the current matchmaking adjustments. (you know, trying not to put 5 grouiped players against 5 solos) But... Until I actually hear that's the case, I'm honestly terrified to go into ranked alone.
My wife and I are ecstatic about it. We regularly play with a good friend, and the three of us all together play great. Going from a trio to a duo sucks through, it's almost as bad as trying to play without the minimap.
I think some people have just lost sight of the fact that this is a team game. They're focused on "I played on my own, and I got here on my own," so much that they want to forget that working closely with others is the main focus of the game.
If you want to oplay with a team ... then play team ranked. It's fking simple.
