malzahar is in a bad spot

ever since his rework malzahars voidlings HAVE been a problem and its the simple fact that over half of his damage comes from that single ability. the only time you see a malzahar patch now is a nerf to his voidlings. as of now his laning phase is pretty bad. only way for malzahar to get back mana is through visions, and the only way to make your voidlings attack a particular target is through visions. so during laning phase i have to choose whether i want to farm or not whereas the opposition can do both. the very instant i cast visions on a minion to farm i am completely vulnerable. voidlings will ignore the champ due to the visions targeting and i have no other ability to rely on to stop them save my q (and r if im post 6). both of which barely do any damage to warrant use and thats IF i land the skillshot of q.

the problem with malzahar is that he has too much counterplay as of right now. attack him when visions is on minions, attack him when his voidlings are down and buy qss. malzahar players have to think too much of when and where to use their abilites vs other mages and its frustrating because i am trying to have fun with this champ but its hard when every choice i make completely locks me out of the other and that other players can punish me accordingly even though i am playing right.

now.....with all that over, hopefully these latest nerfs will finally let them be able to bring some damage into the rest of his kit becuase having to rely on just 1 ability to do your damage for you isnt very fun. it gets old pretty fast. rant over.

I know that if he has his ult, he will automatically reach 50% winrate. but really...can riot see that is not the point.

that winrate is based on outside laning phase. when he has his ult most of the time its him either locking down a target so teammates can kill him/her or preventing a target from doing anything in a teamfight so your team can take out the rest.

The past voidling changes really hurt in my opinion. The voildings die way to fast now, they don't multiply on minions so wave-clearing got nerf really hard, dragon and baron one shot them so they can't multiply to help contesting the objective and it also a nerf to his ult cause now for max damage you have to hold on both charges and drop them both really quick on top of applying the E and the ult.

well i hope this post gets a good bit of upvotes so riot can see and get some idea of how to balance him. cuz right now even if i do good its not fun.

It just a matter of people seeing this post in the first place.

to be fair the current voidlings feel so much better than they did before. The charges make sense, he just needs pre-rework voidlings now and his power curve will be a lot healthier...

... in lane, malzahar only gets kills in three situations:

  1. An enemy royally screws up (engages with E on them and living voidlings around)
  2. An ally jungler ganks, and bursts them down while malzahar helps and gets the finishing blow.
  3. An enemy engages malzahar under tower and gets ulted, dying by tower and the subsquent EWQ.

there is no real "interaction" going on - malzahar passively pokes and farms and tries to starve out his snowbally midlaner. Since the rework, malzahar has been nothing more than an auxiliary support and an anti-snowball champion picked to starve out snowballers.

very true and i agree that the voidlings feel healthier.

i think the real problem with his abilites is that they all focus on voidlings. e targets the voidlings and q prolongs e so voidlings can be targeted for longer.

if i dont have e up what is the point of using q other than a slight silence? its damage is laughable. its only real purpose is to help with targeting voidlings. except that if you get into a fight and you visions is on a minion your screwed cuz most of your damage has to wait till you can get it on the enemy champ.

Originally malzahar was a champion with a tight anti-engage kit that was balanced and had a very strong unique niche. His E was his main damage source, but like sona riot only saw a single playstyle... not the anti-assassin playstyle, but instead the "ima spam abilities and do voidlings!" playstyle which didnt work in high elos.

By focusing malzahars damage on his voidlings (you could have litterally given him his passive as a W and made it an active based on the number of spells he casts and given him a spellblade passive...) you remove that anti-assassin niche and pideonhole him into an auxiliary support role. Malzahar is the unfortunate victim of the single largest nerf in the history of the game =/
