@Riot So is Darius going to be niched?

Context: Crippling Strike (W) cooldown lowered from 9/8/7/6/5 to 7/6.5/6/5.5/5 Apprehend (E) armor pen increased from 5/10/15/20/25% to 10/15/20/25/30%

Looking at this, it seems he's being pushed in the direction of a heavier tank-buster.

Is he going to become like Trundle? Something like a normal pick in Low Elo and a dedicated Tank killer in High Elo who can't be first picked. Does it mean you've explored shifting some of his damage into %HP damage?

Basically, any context to these changes is appreciated.

I mean, it makes sense when you compare these changes to some of Darius' current design goals.

Late game/Team Fight hyper carries needing a way to fight everybody indiscriminately is a big deal. Darius doesn't have that much upfront Burst, especially in a Teamfight setting, so making his damage profile that much more in line with a DPS (aka, Tank shredding capabilities) is the natural way to complement his current damage.

And let's be frank here, Darius already can barely be first picked, and his design is such that he may never be so. Might as well go with the flow in that regard.

That is true, and besides, Fighters are thought to be one of the classes that can defeat tanks (Theoretically) due to their DPS. The other class are the ADC/Marksmen, but that's a can of worms I'd rather not open.

The Wiki describes them as thus: Fighters tend to have an advantage against assassins, whose burst tends to fall short of killing them when unaided, as well as tanks, whose inferior damage allows fighters to eventually defeat them in duels, but often struggle against mages and marksmen, whose superior reach allows them to kite approaching fighters.

And if really want to get into the nitty-gritty, here's the Juggernaut description, of which Darius is a part: Juggernauts are melee titans who relentlessly march down the opposition and devastate those foolish enough to get within their grasp. They are the only subclass who excel at both dealing and taking significant amounts of damage, but in turn they have a tough time closing in on targets due to their low range and extremely limited mobility.

So while Darius (And his fellow Juggernauts) could be called "Tank-Shredders", the overall idea of them defeating tanks in duels is, rather than the fast AA methods of Marksmen, Juggernauts (And Divers) wear them down over time.
