Riot, please consider 5 small changes that would make the ladder grind FEEL a lot less grind-y
- Require at least 2 straight losses to drop to lower tier from 0LP. (EDIT: Because it takes 2/3 wins to climb up one tier.)
- Be protected from dropping to lower tier if you get an S- or better (i.e., you lose a game at 0LP, but you got an S- or better). (EDIT: Because such a high score should indicate you didn't deserve the loss.)
- If you drop to lower tier, have enough LP to get back to promos with 2 (or just one) straight wins (e.g., drop to 60LP and gain 20LP per win). (EDIT: Because when you climb a tier, you end up with 0LP, so even requiring 2 wins to get back to promos seems reasonably significant.)
- Reset to 20LP per win/lose if you drop to lower tier—or better (as in more than 20LP per win and less than 20LP per loss). (EDIT: Because you got to the higher tier—presumably because you deserved it—so isn't it fair to assume you deserve at least baseline numbers in the lower tier?)
- Get autofill protection for placement games. (EDIT: Because these games, I've understood, have more impact on your ranking than any other individual games.)
The ladder is intentionally grind-y. I get that. These changes wouldn't remove that.
These changes would only remove some of the things that make it feel like the system is just stacked against the player. I'm not discounting the things that make it feel better (e.g., free win when getting to promos the second time).
I'd be very interested to hear how someone at Riot sees these things. I might've missed it, but I've never seen the LP system really discussed by the people at Riot.
EDIT: To answer the obvious criticism of "This would make people get a higher ranking than they deserve," please explain how? Assuming the LP system is valid to begin with, none of these changes would make people get higher than deserved rankings. It would just—potentially—take fewer games to reach your "true" ranking (where you win 50% of games).
