Why do people seem to be so against helping out Sona?

Atuko··10 votes·1,449 views

I'm just really curious as to why any time someone says that Sona needs any kind of help it's just largely disapproved by a majority of people, I mean, she has other skills besides her Q

I'm asking this as a general question because I'm honestly curious, not as a buff thread or anything

It's kind of like why we never help the upper-middle class become rich and why there aren't charities to do so.

Sona is doing pretty well. She's had an above 50% winrate for like, forever, Season 6 masteries have been really kind to her, and she just is not in a state where you can say "what she needs is help". Sona does not need help, she does strong amounts of damage and healing, has pretty decent mobility, and good amounts of burst.

She lacks really good CC. I'm not a fan of her ult because I feel it's lacking compared to the basic abilities of many other champions. It feels antiquated by comparison to Braum Ult or Alistar WQ (which he can now spam). Sona R used to be seen as like a powerful game-changing ult, but I think of it as really lackluster at the moment.

But the rest of her kit is working a bit too well to buff her.

She's too frustrating to play against. The poke hurts a bunch and heals are always irritating to play against. Any buffs generate less fun for other people because she is just that kind of champion.

lol, you should see nami then...her W is free poke at equal range, a heal combined(so she maxes her damage and heal at the same time), her Q is only an 8 second cooldown for a stun/knockup combo, her E empowers the adc multiple times and her ultimate is on a much shorter cooldown for about 2000 range, knockup, slow and decent damage

i'm just hoping she isn't their next target cuz i'm switching to nami once I get her

But nami relies on skill shots for both CC sort of. I never feel cheated against a nami because she has to aim her skills and her heal can either hit one and heal two or heal two and hit one. Her autos are also not usually enhanced. I dont hate playing against Nami as much as sona. I think powerchords is ultimately what makes me hate playing against sona. I don't even know Nami's passive.

nami's heal is twice sona's, her poke damage is almost equal, actually greater with her Q and she has twice the CC of sona

all sona has going for her is that nothing but her ult is skillshot...which is bad cuz she'll heal lowest %hp target, not your selected target

I'm merely explaining why on the receiving end sona is more hated than Nami. I can out play a Nami for days. You can't really out play sona poke and it has a Lower CD I believe. Not to mention Nami poke can bounce to minions if I'm not mistaken

You are mistaken, I suggest you actually research champions before discussing them:

http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Nami

Nami's W is literally all 3 of Sona's basic abilities in a single spell-cast. Then Nami still has 2 more spells after that. In just a single activation of her W, Nami: A; does more damage than Sona, but at almost 200 extra units of range, B; returns a bounce to heal herself for almost double or more of what Sona could and C; triggers Nami's passive which is like Sona's E, but with a higher base.

There's a reason Nami's been considered a superior copy of Sona, going as far back as patch 3.14.

Hell, we haven't even gotten to discussing Bard who is a superior copy of both of these.

How is 725 more than 850? You've been repeating this lie a lot lately.

You know full good and well that comment was referring to Sona's 550-unit basic attack range. Hymn of Valor has 2 parts: the primary active for 40 damage and the secondary active for 20 damage that can only be procced by performing a basic attack at 550 range. Last I checked, 725 is more than 550.

Maybe the reason you think Sona is so bad is because you don't properly harass with her. Most people like to sit at a comfortably safe 850 range and poke down the opponent with a very reliable targeted damage spell before going in to use auto procs and power chords to bully the enemy. Maybe this is why you think she's weak despite her really strong winrate.

LankPants1 votes

Oddity about people who say this, they're almost always Bronze or low Silver.

I'd say that's because Sona's not particularly frustrating to play against, she's actually very easy to play against. You just need to be willing to take the initiative and engage on Sona, which almost every meta support can do. I think that at lower ranks people just miss the timings and opportunities for this even although they're very wide which makes Sona seem far stronger than she is.

HyperSMB3 votes

The issue for most people, and this coming from a Sona main, is that Sona takes less "Skill" than other characters. Because she is seen as noob friendly, the natural thing for most people is to then say she should be weaker than her counterparts.

It sucks, but it is the way most people, including the rito balance team since S3 sees her.

Atuko7 votes

That doesn't seem fair at all, because the only people who can determine the difficulty of Sona is Riot, the same people who have the power to nerf or buff her

Sona is a champion like all the rest and deserves to be treated as such, if Sona being too easy is the problem then Riot just needs to add more complexity to her (and they could very easily do so if they wanted to), and as a Sona main as well, I wouldn't mind that at all

Unstoppable Monk2 votes

Garen is what happens when they try and make the noob friendly champion into a competitive one.

Just keep that in mind.

RIP GAREN'S PUNCH.

Because she hits like a brick and fully heals the ADC with like two w's after a trade.. and she is extremely squishy for it so it balances out.

Did you mean : Soraka

TekkenPlayer3 votes

Soraka doesn't hit like a brick. She slowly tilts you like lymphomic cancer

Unstoppable Monk3 votes

Machine gun bananas gonna go fast and rip your face off. Soraka

Pika3104 votes

Sona doesn't hit like a brick either, as a matter-of-fact she has the lowest bases of the entire support class and is outclassed in damage by literally everyone short of Braum.

Did you mean to say LICH BANE hit's like a brick? Cause that would make more sense.

There are 4 types of opinions regarding Sona:

  1. She's fine
  2. She should never have been reworked, and the rework is terrible
  3. She's horrible to play against and busted
  4. IDGAF

There really is not any standing consensus that she should be buffed in her current state.

Unstoppable Monk5 votes

If you counter her you are going to have fun instantly killing her every time she's alive.

Zorae421 votes

5 Her rework is fine. But she feels kinda bad to play unless you are super ahead/fed because she's so reliant on AP scaling. And her E feels pretty terrible. It would be nice if she could get a better E and potentially a less awful heal at the expense of some of her Q's accuracy or power or something.

Nagoh Shan7 votes

Her rework really wasn't fine.

OverpoweredSoap1 votes

Because she's a generalist and people fear those types of champions when they are strong.

She's also one of the few support champions that actually do damage.

That being said, that's technically her problem. Sona HAS to buy mostly (the exception being sightstone and MAYBE one defensive item) ap items to be useful, otherwise she feels extremely weak.

Building her support makes the the active parts of her abilities useless and puts all of her power into the actives of items alone.

Building her AP seems to be the only good way to build her.

La Barbotte1 votes

cause she can one shot the adc lol

Atuko7 votes

Why do people hold onto this exaggeration about Sona? This isn't true, Sona's kit alone is not gonna let her one shot the ADC

Friendly reminder that all of Sona's damage all comes from artifical scaling that isn't even exclusive to her item 3100 item 3285 meaning anyone could build these items and one shot the ADC

If they could do that they would do that. Sona's Q being so very reliable and her auto attacks already being so threatening means she synergizes well with an item that boosts her auto attack with more magic damage. Other mages don't build lichbane because they don't auto attack.

Synergizing with an item is not "artificial scaling". "Artificial scaling" is an idiotic term. The damage is real.

Atuko6 votes

Artifical scaling meaning, scaling that Sona does not have by herself, but scaling that an item has

Meaning, Lich Bane's passive, and Ludens' passive

I fail to see how that matters. The argument is usually that anyone can build those items and do what Sona can, but that's wrong. The fact is that a lot of champions really can't use lichbane very well. They don't want to wait two seconds between each proc while Sona generally waits til the right moment to use her W and E instead of firing everything in a burst, they don't like getting in auto range or using their auto animation while that is already integrated into Sona's burst.

If Sona does well with an item, then she does well with that item, end of story. It doesn't not count because other champions can also build that item because Sona still won the game.

She in a great spot currently but she needs a rework. She's just annoying to play vs while feeling under rewarding to use.

agbudar1 votes

her poke is to easy her kit is basically slam your face on the keyboard except for your ult.

you DONT NEED TO TARGET ANYTHING JUST BE IN RANGE.

and omg how difficult to land her passive you need to land and auto attack GASP

[slayer-jinx-catface] sarcasm aside she needs a rework.... again

Because it's hard to get support for buffing someone when the people advocating for those buffs are properly insane. I don't blame people for getting sick of Sona threads when half of them started to proclaim "Meddler secretly plans to delete Sona!" and you have Pika310 and his dozens of smurfs downvoting anyone who tries to offer a differing opinion.

Personally I think she's fine and most of the arguments levelled against people who say she's strong are very poor - numbers being poor on paper doesn't reflect the reality and in particular the "all of her damage is artificial and could be done by anyone!" thing just doesn't work. I mean who gives a shit if she's only doing so well because she synergises so well with Lich Bane - you gonna buff her to a 60% win rate just so she can be decent without it? No, that would be insane.

Buff Sona threads are usually a variety of things that aren't really problems being made out to be problems (Sona is too item-reliant, Sona is too mastery-reliant, Sona has tiny damage numbers which makes her having the 6th highest damage output of supports on average irrelevant, etc) so that people with an unhealthy relationship towards this game can push an incredibly strange agenda. I don't know why Sona is the only champion with such insane fans but that's the entire situation. When you're in a Sona thread the worst thing you can do is take an argument in favour of buffing her at face value because "Sona's burst combo is actually weaker than Nami's" doesn't mean she does less damage than Nami. At all.

Sona's my most played and highest mastery champion but it is just such a waste of time to participate in discussions about how weak she is and that's why people disengage/downvote. Riot isn't buying the "Sona is unplayable!" thing because they're not braindead and in particular they're never going to waste time with people who will accuse them of really vile things like abusing the playerbase (I have regularly seen Pika and his aliases talking about a variety of Rioters being hateful towards Sona fans which just... never happened, ever) on a regular basis. Why waste time with people like that? There was a thread where KateyKhaos was talking about why Sona's VU had certain choices made in it and a poster legitimately told her that he wished she didn't have a happy life and that he'd "remember her disrespect". That's not OK.
