Riot has stated that pick order is to be used to determine players' roles as a last resort.

Obviously, communication and compromise are preferred to ensure everyone is playing what they are good at and for team morale, but Riot has supported pick order as the final deciding factor if players refuse to co-operate.

Well what if players decide before hand where they are going and then once the game starts it's something completely different?

You mean like spawning on the summoner platform before deciding that you want to lane-swap or something?

Obviously, that's a matter of communicating with your team.

I'm not quite sure that's what you were referring to though. Clarification?

They decided right once we spawned even though we had all agreed beforehand.

Depending on the exact context of the incident and what was said, that may have been:

  • A person not getting the role they wanted and attempting to force it
  • Someone realizing that switching lanes would be beneficial for the team (better matchups, avoid counters, etc)
  • Someone left communication too late.
  • Lack of communication in champion select

Personally, I'll often ask if my allies are willing to lane-swap if I believe it will be to our advantage and explain my logic to try and convince them. If they aren't willing to then it isn't an issue, but the payoff can be massive (once sent a Vayne+Thresh against Nasus top while our Jayce went bot. Jayce could farm from a distance, Vayne got freefarm, and Nasus fed horribly).

He has, for several ocasions, disrespected pick order, got reported, trolled out etc, [insert general bad behavior or communication with teammates] and wants absolution from the community. I may disagree, who goes where, in the pick phase, and I may be right as the game unfolds, but if I am at the lower ends of the pick order, I never ever choose a champ/pos outside what's left. If you state that you are best at this or that and you are not good at these other positions, you made your disclaimer. It's not (I repeat NOT!) required for you to know all positions and meta champs before going ranked draft. Heck, most top players started maining a single guy and went to platinum with it before starting to learn how to play with other champs and positions.

Who says you need to learn all positions before start ranking is wrong.

Did you mean to reply to me or did you mean to reply to Lyless?

It's not 'official', but Riot encourages it over call order, afaik.

Used to be the determining factor when it was based of mmr. Now it's just a good factor to help decide who gets what when two people call the same role. If I call mid but person above me picks it then that's ok. They had order.

so it doesn't matter who actually is better at being top or not? Just who's in line first? How absurd.

Who's better is not a know fact at the time of the pick and it's a lot to do with perspective. If you think you are better, then you are just being overconfident to the point of (probably, just probably!) disrespectful to your teammates.

Well how would you tell who's better at being top in champion select? There's just not enough time to do the research, so everyone just has to compromise on a system to make things go smoother.

  1. How would you know? I mainly play support this season but know I can jungle better than others even though my stats don't show it.
  2. You should be able to play 4 roles efficiently

Pick order is the official rule of draft because it is completely random on who gets put in the order. It is best to communicate which roles you are good at, and sometimes give your role up to someone who is a lower pick than you.

It should be used, and if you don't get your role or don't like it you can just dodge. For the people that don't dodge and flame because they didn't get what they want is the problem.
