Baron's problem isn't that it's too strong/weak it's that it's like fighting a tower

What baron needs is to actually feel like a boss fight. That doesn't mean you just throw a bunch of damage and debuffs on it and call it a day. At the very least there should be skillshots players have to dodge in order to complete the objective without dying. Taking the baron shouldn't be as binary as "are we strong enough or are we too weak?" The baron should make teams dance while they take it so that both the repositioning and preoccupation the baron forces from them is what makes the objective risky to take and gives the enemy opportunities to capitalize on.

Right now the baron is a weaker version of a tower that a team can completely ignore up until the smite fight. The baron should have some agency in when a team can reliably kill and secure a last hit on it, again giving a team that's behind windows for plays if they're performing their due diligence with wards/vision.

Some ideas off the top of my head:

  1. The baron has some kind of point of vulnerability that opens up at one of its sides at random for a period of time and attacks that hit this spot do increased damage.

  2. The baron has a defensive curl ability that massively decreases all damage while it's active.

  3. The baron rains down toxic globs of acid from the skies that come down like xerath ults and are imperative for anything but a tank to dodge.

As I'm writing this I'm reminded of the star guardian game mode's final boss with the buffed-up rift herald. While I think that difficulty would be too high for the rift I think it would be a step in the right direction to move more towards that kind of interaction for the baron. Because right now that's what's ultimately missing from the objective; interaction. It needs to evolve beyond a glorified turret.

No offense but I don't agree. I think the point of the baron is it's great for trying to end games. It gives you amazing push potential and what not. I think if anything the best thing to give baron if it needs a change is literally just extra health. Because when you want baron alot of the time you have to make sure you get some good picks before doing it. I guess what I'm saying is people are more concerned about being able to complete the baron before the enemy team gets a solid chance to steal. So i don't think it needs to be stronger to the point where players should worry for their lives, but more so more durable so that they have to think twice about the enemy's chance to steal before doing it. I do agree though it dies to fast in some games.

None taken.

If I sum up what I think baron should be, it's not that he should be flat out more difficult or threatening. It's that I think the tax he should put on a team is their freedom to position freely around the pit. I think this is a better tax than "do you have someone with enough tankiness/lifesteal to drool on themselves in front of it" because it would allow for more team comps to successfully complete the objective (namely squishier ones) and still make it risky to acquire. By forcing the team taking it to have to dance around it (which doesn't have to be overly difficult) then you also make it harder to sneak since a player or team taking it will have to move more liberally and risk being seen by more peripheral warding.

It's current special attacks needs to be more apparent. The only one worth dodging is the knock up tentacle, and that's only because it's cc that makes killing baron slower.

The slow field is like "eh what evs". The line puke is like "eh what evs".

The back spikes he launches on people behind him- they don't do enough. They do so little of an increase, that many players just don't know that baron is actually doing 50% more damage to them for standing behind him.

Riot said in a recent post that they're careful not to make baron overly tactical for the same reason they don't want to make it overly strong, because it can have a chilling effect on baron attempts to where people will only try it after an ace or some other significant advantage. I agree with that concern but I would like to see baron err on the side of being too tactical over having too many stats.

Right now the only realistic way to create conditions for baron sneak opportunities is to play a champion that meets the stat barrier (yi, trynd, aatrox). I can envision a weaker baron with an increased tactical barrier that can be solo'd by many more champions but would take longer due to the tactics. If the right mix of tactics and stats was found I think baron attempts would be even more frequent and allow many more creative macro plays. For instance you could have a secondary damage dealer that's not only yi/trynd/aatrox start the baron while 4 siege as an example. Tactical barrier > stat barrier when it comes to macro possibilities.
