Sona was not properly compensated for the loss of her aura stances

Atuko··85 votes·6,295 views

If you're wondering why Sona is such a hot topic all the time, then there it is

Sona's new "tag your ally" aura actives pale in comparison to her old kit auras in every way, and her new aura actives don't make up for her only having one source of hard CC vs. supports who have hard CC's on basic abilities, the new aura actives are too underwhelming

This is why, this is not opinion, this is fact, all you have to do is compare the kits

If you ask me, she probably needs another rework, or at least change how the current one works a bit

Edit : Her current kit is pretty much forcing her to build like a full AP mage to get anything out of her, so there's also that

I miss old Sona because I am an intelligent player who can see and appreciate the power of a team-wide bonus.

It wasn't unclear in the drat slightest and it was SUPER satisfying because AURAS ARE THE BEST THING.

Those things that Sona has currently are not really Auras nor are they Stances, but they CLAIM to be. There really is no reason for her to be locked out of her basic abilities for a moment after she casts any of them anymore... but she still gets locked out of them.

So many things are wrong with her and it really hurts.

And the fact that anytime I try and ask for help for my main I get "OMG BUT SHE ONE SHOT ME WITH Q!!1" is really annoying

Maybe if she wasn't being forced to build straight AP mage because of her current state that wouldn't happen

I've asked time and time again for riot to bring her fantasy of being a bard like musical champion by rallying her allies in teamfights and weakening her foes (which is what a bard does). Sona in theory should shine in teamfights, she just doesn't hit her full potential. And when I've asked riot time and time again whats their plan for Sona, they straight up say they don't have any plans for her at all and they wont change her dramatically because she's a "staple support" and they don't want to take that away from the new players.

Taric at one point was a "staple support" and now he needs a full on rework. Shouldn't that say something?

I think it's probably accurate to say that the majority of the population that plays this game, unfortunately, doesn't feel the same way. Many more people are simply focused on their abilities and hp, and the enemy's, to be aware of other things, which is a little disappointing. I don't think it was unclear, I just think people were focused on other things, but the question then is, do you try to get the players to be more aware of auras, or just remove most of them? The first option is probably better, but the second is easier, and seems to be what Rito went with.

So I'm not sure where to put this but since I'm super lazy I'm just going to paste this log since me and a good friend note that this is ridiculous (we actually -just- had this conversation less than 20 minutes before I post this)

the important-er part has ">Sona was not properly compensated..." if you want to just jump (I also included a break)

[Reaper Review]: Sona needs to not be a jack of all trades [Reaper Review]: In a role that has too many trades [Elphrihaim]: Sure. [Reaper Review]: I mean, it's still dumb that Nami's W alone does almost everything Sona's QWE does [Elphrihaim]: xD [Reaper Review]: Q: Poke W: Heal E: Movement boost [Reaper Review]: Nami W: Poke + heal + MS boost from her passive [Elphrihaim]: true [Reaper Review]: and she has non-ult CC [Reaper Review]: and I'm pretty sure her on-hit steroid's better than Sona's [Reaper Review]: since it ALSO grants a MS boost [Elphrihaim]: It's worse [Reaper Review]: worse on a single hit? [Elphrihaim]: think so [Reaper Review]: or worse altogether? [Reaper Review]: since Nami E is 3 hits [Elphrihaim]: er [Elphrihaim]: sorry [Elphrihaim]: I think 2 Sona Q buffs = all 3 Nami E buffs [Reaper Review]: but the boosted hits from Nami's E also slow [Reaper Review]: iirc [Elphrihaim]: yah [Elphrihaim]: they do [Reaper Review]: so yeah [Reaper Review]: Nami is just entirely better than Sona at everything [Elphrihaim]: it's not a huge slow (iirc it scales all the way up to 30%) [Elphrihaim]: but it's pretty significant as a difference [Reaper Review]: Sona has a better figure, though [Reaper Review]: that's about it [Elphrihaim]: Surging Tides All allied champions touched (within the AoE or affected by) one of Nami's abilities gain 60 (+20% AP) Movement Speed for 1.5 seconds.

[Elphrihaim]: >Sona was not properly compensated... ? [Reaper Review]: yes [Elphrihaim]: eh, I don't have much to say [Elphrihaim]: Anybody could bring it up as a point-- Nami W is about the same as Sona's Q + half Sona's W.

(or Sona's W + half Sona's Q, however you wanna slice it.) [Reaper Review]: and Sona's E [Reaper Review]: which is still the worst skill in the game [Elphrihaim]: Nami's E is basically objectively superior to Sona's E + Sona's Q, assuming you only care about a single ally's movement-- Sona is better for getting your team around the map. [Elphrihaim]: Sona's E, however, has such a small buff duration for the speed it grants (lol, 14% (+3.5% per 100 AP) speed for 3 seconds) [Elphrihaim]: In fact, let's calculate that. [Elphrihaim]: Nami's passive grants 60 (+20% AP) flat movement speed for 1.5 seconds. [Reaper Review]: Let's assume 200 AP on both of them [Reaper Review]: actually, how much AP does FQC give [Reaper Review]: 50? [Elphrihaim]: Sona's E grants 14% (+3.5%) for 3 seconds [Elphrihaim]: 50, yes [Reaper Review]: then let's use 100 [Elphrihaim]: tbh I was going to do a number of tests [Reaper Review]: that works too [Elphrihaim]: like 50/100/200? [Reaper Review]: sure [Elphrihaim]: lemme check to make sure sona's E actually lasts 3 seconds though [Elphrihaim]: WAITNO. [Elphrihaim]: Sona's E grants HER the MS buff for 3 seconds. [Elphrihaim]: It grants it to her allies for only 1.5 seconds. [Reaper Review]: pff [Elphrihaim]: So this becomes even EASIER. [Reaper Review]: can we just call Nami the winner now [Elphrihaim]: 60 (+20% AP) flat MS or 14% (+3.5%) MS. [Elphrihaim]: Testing at 50, 100, 200, and 400 AP with a 325, 350, and 400 MS unit. [Elphrihaim]: Nami's buff grants 70/80/100/140 MS. [Elphrihaim]: Sona's buff grants 15.75/17.5/21/28% MS. [Elphrihaim]: 325 MS: [raw speed]

Nami: 395/405/425/465 Sona: 376/382/393/416 [Elphrihaim]: 350 MS: [raw speed]

Nami: 420/430/450/490 Sona: 405/411/423/448 [Elphrihaim]: 400 MS: [raw speed]

Nami: 470/480/500/540 Sona: 463/470/484/512 [Elphrihaim]: Extrapolating a little because I'm not doing hundreds of calculations? [Elphrihaim]: Nami's Surging Tides > Sona's Celerity in 100% of situations. [Reaper Review]: [8:54 PM] [Reaper Review]:

<<< can we just call Nami the winner now [Elphrihaim]: Yeah, sure, Sona's is AoE. [Elphrihaim]: Sona is also probably not going to have her entire team within the AoE. [Reaper Review]: but if Sona's in range to tag people, she'll get AoE'd and died [Elphrihaim]: And, if she does, her team is super vulerable to AoE CC... [Elphrihaim]: Like, say: [Elphrihaim]: Leona's Solar Flare. Nami's Aqua Prison. Sejuani's Glacial Prison(?). Bard's Cosmic Binding. [Reaper Review]: oh, so Nami counters Sona on top of being better than her at everything [Elphrihaim]: Darius's Apprehend. Draven's Stand Aside. Annie's Incinerate/Summon: Tibbers if she has Pyromania. Anivia's Flash Frost(?). Jarvan's Demacian Standard -> Dragon Strike(?) combo. Lux's Light Binding and Lucent Singularity. Jinx's Flame Chompers(?). Lissandra's Ring of Ice(?). Gnar's GNAR!. Ekko's Parallel Convergence*. Nautilus' Riptide and (forgot ult entirely). Syndra's Scatter the Weak. Zyra's Stranglethorns. Sion's Q(?) and R(?).

Move Quick is uhm

Pretty bombastic.

It passively gives movement speed just for not having taken damage. And the active is really nice for getting out of dodge.

Either half of Move Quick is sucky. But Move Quick is amazing because of both parts.

LankPants4 votes

Sona's E's basically a move quick for your team though. They're both terrible abilities that are barely even worth skilling, Sona's is just marginally less terrible.

SOna's doesn't have a passive MS boost component, though, which I find handy for roaming/returning to lane.

While Nami and Sona share a lot of the same weaknesses (squishy, less then awesome team fight, falls off if behind, easily gankable in lane, mana hungey, etc), I can honestly say that Sona is much easier to play the Nami. Other then that I can't think of a reason to play Sona over Nami.

Correct. Sona builds items that synergize with her kit, just like how Nami builds items that synergize with HER kit.

A Sona building items that synergize with her kit will deal more damage than a Nami that builds items to synergize with her kit because they are different champions that bring different things to their team.

By that logic Thresh, Alistar, Bard, Braum and pretty much any other support who isn't Janna or Soraka is a liability. That's why we don't use that train of logic.

He's suggesting a rework not a buff

A Miss Fortune18 votes

Sona definitely isn't in a "perfect spot". She has a small set of strengths that are shadowed by a tremendous list of weaknesses. Not to mention that Sona overlaps with Nami and Sona is only ever better than Nami if she's in an overpowered state. She really needs a rework or a buff that allows her to be relevant outside of the first few levels of the game, because a squishy, immobile, mana-hungry, poor-scaling support just isn't going to cut it.

CoffeeDave7 votes

This is also true of Nami . Makes me wonder if there will be a 'Caster Support' rework like they're doing for the mid-lane mages or the ADCs.

A Miss Fortune7 votes

Nami is fine mostly from what I've seen, I think she could use a mana buff or some fluidity in her kit (her E/W being able to be cast quickly at the same time for example) but I think the only reason she really isn't seeing play is because of the current state of the game. Broken things like Sated Tank Yi make playing squishy supports like Nami impossible. Don't get me wrong though, I really don't have any desire to fight a veteran Nami main because Nami can definitely work.

CoffeeDave1 votes

She's also unreliable. Her Bubble is hard to land, you have to be specific on who you target for her Ebb and Flow or it won't bounce the way you want it and her Ult is so slow it's not uncommon for your opponents to walk out of the way of it. Yes she's stronger then Sona but she really has to work at it.

A Miss Fortune9 votes

Nami is harder to play and master but to do so is significantly more rewarding than mastering Sona.

It Hertz When IP6 votes

Actually, the focus on AA melee junglers isn't all bad for Nami. I see one of them coming, and the majority of the time I can just drop the bubble at my feet to reliably nail them when they close in or at the very least force them to dodge.

Then again, maybe that only works on Silver, I dunno.

I should of used a different word than "impossible". It's just overall harder to play squishy supports because it means your tanks have to peel for another person. Also I'm talking more about champions like Nami, Sona, Bard, Annie, Brand. Champions who don't work that well with a full tank build and usually build something like Ardent, Banner, and even Deathcap or Luden's. They just have a significantly harder time being played because they're going to be squishy no matter what and the peel that they have available is almost always used for your carry. Plus AP Support itemization is garbage. Pretty much the only two viable AP Support items are Banner and Ardent.

  • Annie and Brand aren't supports. They're just mages taken bot lane. He'll get his support tag later.

  • Bard is actually a very good pick in higher elos, and I don't think he builds much in the way of ap.

  • This basically leaves Nami and Sona for examples in this regard. Everyone knows both of these champs aren't in the best of spots atm, but the reasoning for it contrast each other. Nami has a skill floor problem. Sona has a skill ceiling problem.

  • Ardent Censor isn't all that viable...

WadeWilson133719 votes

Sona is not in a perfect spot. She is well rounded, however she is outclassed by more specialized supports.

If you pick Sona into a kill lane like Leona Blitzcrank Nautilus, one hook or zenith blade and you die because you are so squishy.

Soraka just easily outheals your poke, and you will be close enough for her to land a Q anyways, so you are only overextending and risking getting ganked for going even in a trade, or even losing it.

Hell, even Karma is becoming a meta support and does arguably better. Sona never sees play in higher levels because of her lack of mobility and her extreme squishiness.

That "perfect spot" you are talking about is is far from the truth.

Pika31021 votes

Speaking of "higher levels," Sona is the least-recent champion to be picked into support during a professional match, going as far back as patch 4.13. This means not only Taric and Karma have been played more recently, it also means champions not generally thought of as "supports" have been picked over Sona, including Syndra, Kayle and others.

If LCS, LCK and the other professional leagues are an accurate sign of champion balance, it proves that Sona is the weakest support in the entire game. So much so that even off-supports consistently outperform her.

ChaoticPinecone2 votes

Professional play isnt always the best indicator for champion balance. Because when the enemy team chooses a champion that is so strong in lane, they lane swap to avoid that lane. She has the strongest level 1 of all supports, with maybe an argument to be made for Karma.

And Akali, Wukong, Aatrox, Heimer, Tryn, Yorick and Teemo have all been played last prior to Sona's last play (According to http://lol.esportspedia.com/wiki/List_of_Most_Recent_Games_By_Champion. Hate to break it to you, but 1) it was in S5, and 2) there will always be a champion that has gone "longest without being picked"

Pika31013 votes

I specifically said "picked into support." Key word being SUPPORT. Not only did you fail to make a counterpoint, you've strengthened my own point by noting that only 7 champions OVERALL have been played less recently than Sona. Thus the likelihood of her being played competitively is lower than more than 90% of the champion pool and still the absolute least likely of support. You've confirmed that Sona is amongst the weakest 10% in the entire game and still the absolute weakest of the support class. I thank you for emphasizing my point for me.

ChaoticPinecone2 votes

I know what you said, and my first point went into that. "Weak"? How do you define "weak"? Competitively weak? Weak in solo queue?

Because yes, she is competitively weak. Just as Master Yi, Shyvana, Udyr, and Tryn are competitively weak. Yet people still complain how broken Sated Yi is. Competitive weakness does not mean the champion is in a bad spot.

And as I stated, she was played last season.

And i lsited the other champions not to refute your point that Sona hasnt been played competitvely in a while, but to get you thinking. Other champions also have pick rates as bad as or worse than her in competitive play. Does that mean Akali, Teemo, Tryn, and Wukong need buffs?

LankPants8 votes

How do you define power?

To me there is one important fact here, the pros pick the most powerful champions. Their job is to win at the game, why would they ruin their chances by picking something subpar?

Does that mean Akali, Teemo, Tryn, and Wukong need buffs?

All of those champs are pretty bad. Wukong problably needs minor buffs, he's not absolutly atrocious but he's certainly not good. The other 4 (Sona included) need reworks. They are all terribly designed champions.

ChaoticPinecone1 votes

Correction - pros pick the champions that will most likely win them the game at the professional level. That does not always mean they will play all the powerful champions.

Solo or Dynamic Queue is different from professional play. Which is why Master Yi has one of the highest winrates even in Challenger (in NA at least), but only got picked once recently in professional play (by Insec in the LPL). Shyvana is up there too in NA Challenger, but I dont think weve seen a Shyvana jungle in professional play.

For a similar reason, thats why you dont see solokills in competitive play too often in lane. They tend to play a lot more conservative, opting for more teamfights and skirmishes rather than 1v1 outplaying your opponent. But in Dynamic Queue, solokills happen all the time.

Champions like Sona, Akali, Teemo, and Tryn thrive against uncoordinated teams. In professional play, you can avoid Sona's strong laning phase by lane swapping - which is hard for almost all tiers of play. A coodrinated team can take away Sona's strongest point in the game. An uncoordinated team can not.

LankPants8 votes

In professional play, you can avoid Sona's strong laning phase by lane swapping - which is hard for almost all tiers of play.

Why would you swap away from Sona? She's free kills for a coordinated duo lane. Sona cannot do jack shit about a tank engaging on her, but she takes this one step further than most mage supports who share this trait, she can't do jack shit about a tank engaging on her carry.

Zane Zephyr7 votes

On top of that the only thing she really offers to a lane early on is pretty much defensive, because if she goes in to try to poke any coordinated lane is going to go in on her and blow her up, which means she's probably going to sit back and offer pretty much nothing but some heals here and there

epicgizmo5192 votes

thats any support tho if a support gets caught by these champs they die cause they derped up when im playing bard support i dont blame his kit for being caught in cc

Pika31013 votes

At least Bard has a considerably higher chance of surviving than most other supports, particularly Sona. His HP and armor bases and scalings are both considerably higher than other mage supports. Additionally he has a lot more mobility and CC for escaping.

You're half-right; if you get caught on Bard, that's because you made a mistake in-game and can't blame his kit. If you get caught on Sona, that's because you made a mistake in champ select for picking a support with no CC, mobility or general survivability overall.

ChaoticPinecone1 votes

Blitz, Naut, and Leona will kill any squishy. Its not limited to Sona.

No, you cant outpoke the one support who is balanced around her heal IF you let her land her Q. Very few supports can, and it usually requires the Soraka to mess up. You can, however, outpoke other healers - Nami, Taric, and Alistar come to mind. And Soraka and Karma dont have the same amount of hard CC that Sona does.

You can say that Sona isnt in a good spot, but her #5 winrate and #12 pickrate seem pretty solid. Not overpowering and pick or ban, but not bad.

WadeWilson133712 votes

Well, here is the thing about winrates. I assume you used Champion.gg as it is the most credible source in most peoples opinions. When you look at a winrate on Champion.gg, you need to realize the overwhelming majority of those games are Platinum, and mostly Diamond V.Sona is fine in those elos because people are only beginning to get to the point where they punish you. If you pick Sona in Masters+, they pick Thresh or even Blitzcrank and you will feed. If they dont do that, then the jungler will camp you or even level 2 gank, because thats just how free of a kill Sona is.

If you need an example of the winrate situation, Nidalee has a below 50% winrate, but is quite possibly the single most broken champion in the game at the moment. The reason her winrate is low is because she is also extremely difficult to play, and Platinum players arent at the level of mechanical mastery in most cases. If you have 125+ games on Nidalee though, her winrate skyrockets to 58%, and in Diamond+ Korean solo q she has a 57% AVERAGE winrate.

Also, Sona is overwhelmingly easy to play if you dont factor positioning as a thing. You dont even have to know anything about support, its just poke and hope you dont get hit by something that will 1 shot you. Hell, Sona is in the same situation as Brand where the highest % builds dont even buy Sightstone. Your only skillshot is your ultimate, and since youre so squishy and are likely playing in Plat chances are the enemies will bumrush and try to demolish you the second you try to Q them, so its not even hard to land that as you die in the process of getting dive bombed.

ChaoticPinecone1 votes

Youre basing all this information off of assumptions. Take a look at the data. But you make a good point - I did use champion.gg, Plat+ players is one pool of sample. So here are more stats:

Lolking still puts her at a 52% winrate overall

http://na.op.gg/statistics/champion/ In Diamond, she has a 51% winrate in the past month. In Master, she has a 53.8%. In Challenger, she has a 64.7% winrate (though to be fair, the sample size is really small in challenger). From the evidence we have, her winrate does not drop the higher tiers you go. In fact, it seems to rise.

Nidalee actually has a 51% winrate in Plat, 55% in Diamond, 64% in Master, and 65% in Challenger. She is only below 50% when youre gold or below.

Instead of assuming that she gets punished more and her winrate drops the higher tier you are, look at the data. Her winrate actually increases the higher you go. Maybe because people learn to position such a squishy champion, or take advantage of her lane dominance.

WadeWilson13377 votes

Well, ill put it to you this way. I watch alot of streamers on Twitch, mostly junglers. I can tell you that I have never seen one of these high elo junglers in a game with a Sona that did not only lose lane, but fed their living ass off. Sona is just one of those champions that makes a jungler say, "Oh look, 300g!"

ChaoticPinecone1 votes

So you watch select streamers on twitch play a handful of games. I give you the actual data from the games played.

Who has the more correct information?

WadeWilson13376 votes

Well considering i watch Twitch on a daily basis at work probably 3-5 games atleast and ive been doing this since September...its probably more like hundreds.

Im not disregarding winrates, however if you pick Sona into an enemy with a strong support such as Blitzcrank, or a competent jungler with a strong early game, she will not be a good pick. I am telling you from my experience in my own personal games that I get fed off of Sona literally everytime i have seen her this season. The same goes for master/challenger players, and the reason for that is because i learned to camp Sona, Nami, and Karma from those players because those picks typically overextend and have no escapes. Its not rocket science, those champions have to be lane dominant to win and are very easy to gank.

ChaoticPinecone1 votes

Again. You watch a handful of games compared to the games played. I give you data on ALL the games played.

Who has the more accurate information?

WadeWilson13377 votes

Didnt know hundreds was a handful...Have fun with all of your statistics, i will continue on with my life, getting fed by camping Sona lanes and basically never losing to one. Enjoy playing with your numbers.

Old Sona could stack all auras on, that was scary.

But yeah her auras need... a change if possible, they currently... dont really function as auras/stances more like a small buff.

Pika31010 votes

You're mistaking "Old Sona" for "release Sona." Upon release, her auras persisted for 3 seconds after swapping, but it was lowered to 2 seconds in patch: http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/V1.0.0.105 and then lowered again to just 1 seconds in patch: http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/V1.0.0.143

Then considering the 0.5 cooldown between swapping stances, at no point from season 2 all the way up to patch 4.13 was Sona EVER capable of stacking all auras. Claiming otherwise is just delusional falsity.
