Is The Maw of Malmortius an item who's removal would destroy the game?

item 3156 Is an interesting item that is rather useful on AD midlaners as a way of helping them survive the powerful teamfighting and AOE abilities of most AP midlaners. To allow for some fairness, yes it does its job exceedingly well, but in no way does it make it impossible to kill ADs as an AP. Another fact, this item is not core on any champion and the complete item(not its components) should not be any champion's first item, but is instead a counter to be used in specific situations.

I hereby propose a thought experiment. In this post, we shall pretend the great Maw doesn't exist. NOT that is was removed, but rather that the item as a whole was never thought of by the creator and the concept that sparked its creation did not exist. By doing this, we can safely decide whether the outright and complete removal of The Maw of Malmortius would UTTERLY DESTROY AN ENTIRE CLASS OF CHAMPIONS, or would safely allow the greater balancing opportunities League of Legends strives for.

Please be nice to each other and treat one another with respect.

So build hexdrinker instead. It was around long before maw was (since V1.0.0.105). Maw not being here wouldn't change much. Btw, if you need maw to win your lane vs an AP mid, youre probably doing it wrong, since most AD mids are assassins

So how would you do it right? Just build HD, or anything else you suggest? I ask in the even that I find myself in such a situation and don't know what to do.

Short answer don't buy any MR item. You are an assassin you can beat them 1v1 without it. This is how it was done for years, IDK why Riot suddenly decided that despite having all tools to avoid damage assassins should suddenly also have ability to be too tanky for mages to kill.

Without Maw there were still item 3139 item 3111 item 1057 ->item 3026.

It would depend on the AD I'd be hypothetically playing, and who I'd be vs. There's a lot of variables that can affect what I'd build. And play styles matter too. Unless you're getting completely smashed the second you step back into lane, hexdrinker / maw shoudn't be one of your first items. I suggest building real AD items (please don't build BotRK, that isn't a real AD item). Generally AD mids that are good have good AD scaling. You want stuff like BF / IE because it'll boost your damage a lot, without sitting there auto attacking (a lot) to get your damage out (BotRK)

Yes, it is. http://champion.gg/champion/Zed/Middle

but is instead a counter to be used in specific situations.

"specific situation" being enemy team is not 5 AD champions? Puh-lease.

but in no way does it make it impossible to kill ADs as an AP

In 1v1? Yes, it does.

Some of us played this game before current, and before old Maw. Both game states were fine.

AD mids functioned without Maw for long, long time. They have other tools to avoid damage, it is nowhere near crucial for them.

IDK what was idea behind this post, Maw is used heavily on AD mids only since preseason, before that it was more of bruiser item. It is obvious that midlane can be balanced without it.

Yeah idk. Ive had great success with Azir against maw people but Azir is way different than the average AP champ since he doesn't really have burst and instead has sustained damage and can push through the maw shield with it. Caw Caw!!Azir
