Out of curiosity, is there some special mechanic for Kayle's R?

Like, I've played two games against bots to try and familiarize myself with Kayle today, and I have been in quite a few situations where I try to use Kayle's Ult, and it doesn't do anything, at all. Maybe this comes from being a WW player where I just hit R and expect it to do something even if it's stupid. Does it have to do with it being a targeted ability like her W? I'm pretty sure I've been holding it over myself or a teammate when pressing R, it just hasn't been going off. Is there a way to set it to auto-cast W and R on herself unless hovering over another champ?

You can cast it on yourself by pressing Alt + Q/W/E/R (according to the ability) Kayle ultimate just create an orange shield which immune the target against any damage (but Crowd Control still apply)

Set R to autocast and you'll be able to use it by hovering your mouse over a champ. Otherwise you have to press R and click on the champ you want to ult.
