Azir is has a place in support, and here's why.

For anyone who has played azir much you will notice a few things seriously hampering your performance.

1.) You will miss cs in laning phase. - Standing in range to cause your soldiers to auto attack is standing in range of enemy gap closers, meaning if they get tanky enough to pass through your front line they can zone you, even if they cant damage you.

2.) The soldier AA's piercing minions, unpredictable animation start, and aoe effects will damage unintended minions if you are also worrying about their positions in relation to the opponent

3.) The cooldown on the full q/e combo leaves you too obviously open to opponents who are paying attention.

This I've found to be shored up in the support role, as Azir's weakness's are covered up while his strengths are able to be used.

1.) He can focus solely on zoning 1 if not 2 champions that will never get tanky (due to adc's need to carry)

2.) He plays incredibly well under your own tower if pushed, and can also do the reverse and harass enemies trying to farm under turret with ease, he is also better at pushing than other supports due to the above coupled with soldier bombs.

3.) His escape is needed less often as the friendly adc allows you to be able to save your escape for ganks only (not forward gap closing)

4.) He can provide initiation/body blocking/ and get negate ganks or turn them around entirely with his ultimate

5.) After laning phase he farms with ease (with some levels and items under his belt) and can recoup the gold loss of the support role

I've even noticed my gold income has bizarrely been HIGHER from the support position, as has my impact on the game.

Bottom line: Azir is TEAM PLAYER, if he is sequestered in top lane, or out maneuvered in mid lane he loses so much of what makes him worth playing.

He offers no sustain/steroids, VERY poor peel/lockdown pre 6, mediocre damage, shoves the wave, etc.

Literally offers nothing you'd want from a support besides 'muh dmg' and even in that is outclassed by things like zyra/velkoz/karma

Daily reminder: Laning phase ends for supports by the time they are level 6-8. That's when they start roaming and ganking. If your support pick doesn't let you WIN lane before that point then you sure as hell better offer crazy utility in the late game to justify your worthless laning phase (aka janna who effectively stalls out the laning phase)

From fighting Azir mid it seems he destroys anyone who backs away. However whenever he does poke me I just run up to him and do a combo thus winning the trade.

I would imagine this would be the same case bottom where if they enemy just went straight in they would win because Azir could not keep them off the adc.

However it will probably be effective against most people since they will probably not change their play style. At the very least if what I said is right it will not become popular since lower elo will never give it a chance unless pros use it.

Good points, makes me want to try Azir sup for myself. I know he can be a real pain and instantly take over bushes. You either leave yourself vulnerable to a gank, or get poked down by his soldiers.

1.) You will miss cs in laning phase.

Your soldiers can attack up to 2/3 of the screen away. If anything, you have the longest, most reliable way to farm. Always keep 1 charge of Sand Soldier in reserve always. If the enemy laner gap closes you to engage, summon the sand soldier behind you, dash to it, reposition your soldiers with Q between you and them, then punish with autos.

2.) The soldier AA's piercing minions, unpredictable animation start, and aoe effects will damage unintended minions if you are also worrying about their positions in relation to the opponent

The auto attack animation through sand soldiers takes some time to get use to, but there is a methodical flow you can use to reliably attack. You're right, the AOE naturally pushes the lane. This might not be as bad for you as you may think. While it's not good, you have to consider that you'll be 2/3 screen away (which is ridiculous in itself) and can use sand soldiers as temporary wards for bushes. So while you naturally push, you are also naturally further away so it offsets some risk.

**3.) The cooldown on the full q/e combo leaves you too obviously open to opponents who are paying attention. **

You're right, after this combo you will be unable to relocate sand soldiers for several seconds and are open to attack... unless you conveniently reserved a sand soldier to place behind you and dash to if they do. Typically using Q is a commitment move since you know you can't relocate, so you normally shouldn't do it unless you know your opponent can't retaliate.

I'm not convinced that Azir can serve as a decent support. He needs a good amount of HP to be able to stand ground and push out dps, and needs a lot of AP/AS/CDR to actually do good damage. His CC is alright, but not nearly as potent as any true support (in which case you might as well have played a support). Key here is that he needs gold to scale and stay relevant, but you wont get much as support.

You are not wrong. Yet I still believe that he's far better in mid. He need AP to get zoning potential.

Yesterday I played a very nice game. Though I didn't get many kills my enemies complimented me for carrying my team.

I mainly focussed on splitting protecting my carry and countering Vi's initiation which my ult while zoning the enemies' Tristana out of the fight by constantly readjusting by soliders between her and my team, so she couldn't go a single step forward.

Sadly Azir still is very buggy which keeps me from playing him in ranked as well: 1.) Flash ult will go into the wrong direction if cast too fast 2.) The displayed attack range of hia soldiers if fae larger than their actual attack range 3.) Soldiers sometimes won't attack after Q 4.) Not a bug, but close: soldiers will not move to were your curser is but to max range.

Get out of my face and don't ever play this toxic scum in support ever again
