Increasing Similarity in Champion Abilities

Ive been noticing that recently Riot has been repeating past champion abilities on reworks or new champs, for example: Viktors q was copied to be Kassadins's new q. Also Gnar's Boulder toss is the exact same as Olaf's Undertow. Id like to hear your thoughts on this and anymore similarities you've seen.

Their are only a finite of skills possible in a game. using a similar or even a copy of one skill is not a big issue. We are not even talking about a copy of an ult, which tends to be iconic of the character. In Oalfs cause the immune to CC.

Plus when Gnar is in his little form his skill shot is coming back his direction and can catch and have the lower cdr amount. So i would not fear that they are taking concepts from other champs and using them in others. Hell their might be a really kool kit that has yet to be made but the parts are all on other champs.

It's more like this.

It used to be that abilities were singled out, and one or two things became the "signatures" of a champions kit. This is more of the Dota style where you'll usually have 1 or 2 less impact or passive skills.

Like Sion. His intended playstyle was AD tank, and in that, his stun and ult were his little toggle and shield were pretty minor. Ditto for Blitz grab. Javelin Toss. Jax's leap and counter strike.

Now, champions have moves on every bit of their kit. So there are fewer options for individual moves to be separate pieces of what a champ does while not being individually nutty.

And it's ok to have two champs who throw things and pick them up as long as their general playstyles are different. It's less okay to have say, Zac and Aatrox with near identical Passives, I'd honestly much prefer Aatrox blood well to be something entirely different. But occasional similarities in moves are ok as long as champs have unique styles-and look at Yasuo, Gnar, Braum, and Lucian and tell me they don't do fairly cool unique stuff.

Viktor and Kassadin Qs only share the fact they are single target damage spells that apply shields. They don't really do it the same way, and they don't even have the same shield type. Second, Viktor barely counts as a champion.

There are only so many effects in the game and there is nothing wrong with overlap when you're looking at the skills in a vacuum.

Lux E, Brand W, Zyra Q. All essentially the same; circular AoE that deals magic damage. None of those champions feel similar beyond being mages. You could even argue Morg W and Gragas Q are in the same category.

And don't get me started on the single target gap closers every other fighter shares. The isolated skills aren't important, it's the kit as a whole.

UM....boulder toss is SIMILAR to undertow...but the same? You do know the boulder stops at the first thing it hits, right?
