Clash question

So my friends and I are getting a team together to take on the new tournament mode coming out sometime in 2018 announced as "Clash." In this they detail that you will be playing people of similar skill levels. Unfortunately, I have a friend who is Plat, while the rest of us are sitting in varied Bronze. Any rioters care to clarify how that would work, if its possible at all?
