Some thoughts on the inevitable Morgana update...

I'm aware Morgana will be updated alongside Kayle, I just can't say anything about Kayle since I never play her due to how boring she is for me.

But Morgana on the other hand, I can say for certain what I would want out of a rework for her. While of course I'm biased and love her current iteration (look it up on my profile I do play Morgana to some extent), I can definitely see change happening to her kit. Feel free to agree or disagree though, would love to spark discussion :).

My stance is that she should have a Warwick style modernization with a new passive and either a new ultimate or a modernized ultimate to go with her style.

Her current passive is just a bonus stat. Nothing to strategize for, nothing to incentivize builds or to give her an edge, just an excuse for her to have poor hp regen. I don't know exactly what I would replace it with but I would definitely support something more interactive for both parties.

Her Q, at least in my opinion, is her core aspect and trademark ability, like Jinx guns or Rammus armor. She may have to "fish for Qs" but a lot of champions are reliant on something for an engage or harass. Morgana is not an exception. This is probably one of the least likely things that will actually end up changing the most. Maybe the duration will change, maybe the projectile speed will, but it'll generally be the same AFK warning we all know and get hit by constantly love.

Her W is quite bland but currently it's the main difference between mid Morgana and support Morgana. If Riot gets rid of it, they'd have to compensate for mid lane. If Riot gets rid of the Q, they'd have to compensate for support. Currently, she presses W on a wave and gets her health back unless either the enemy pushes the wave away from the pool or she tanks minion aggro to keep it still.

Her E is possibly her other core ability as no matter what lane she is in, it'll be useful (assuming Morgana wasn't first picked and the entire enemy team isn't AD, CC-less champions). CC? Done. Magic damage? To anything not musically mute, annoyingly aquatic, or beautifully botanical, done. Anything else? Shit out of luck. If Riot were to change this it'd either be damage in general and become a generic shield or it'd CC for the entire duration. I doubt it'd get changed though.

Her R is shit with her kit, plain and simple. It's a fantastic ability on paper and quite an impressive engagement spell but it doesn't really scream "Morgana". Her basic abilities say "mage", but the ultimate says "tank". There are so many times where I've never pressed R once in a game because it was such a bad time or it was so unnecessarily disadvantageous that it was a pointless skill. I've even won by never leveling it. I say that if she were to have an update, get rid of this first and foremost. Boom. Successful update. 5/7.

tl;dr, I hate Morgana's current kit iteration and her passive and ult are shit. Her Q & E are probably here to stay. Yes I know Kayle is bundled with Morgana in terms of rework.

Her passive is supposed to give her lane sustain via her pool. It's not very appealing, and they could put healing directly on the pool itself, so I agree it should be replaced by something more interesting/interactive, but it's still important to understand why it's here for now.

Her R is bloody strong. If you think it's useless, I'm betting you don't have a lot of experience at this game. Yeah it's a bit tricky to use, but saying "Morgana R is useless, she needs to be in the middle of the fight but she's not a Tank", it's just the same as saying "Singed poison is useless, who would want to do damage BEHIND your champion, enemies are in FRONT of you, not behind". You see what I mean?

More generally, when you complain about something, it's better to explain why you are not happy, rather than what you would want instead. Very often, what you want isn't possible to code/will have very negative side-effect on something else/doesn't actually solve your initial problem/etc. It's better to just explain what's wrong and why it's wrong, and to let the designers/developers find the right solution because they have the whole picture.

So, why do you hare Morgana's current kit?

I'm not sure what I hope to see out of Morgana's rework, but one of the things that I think Morgana suffers from right now is a lack of coherent identity; she's a ranged AP Controller/Enchanter Support/Control Mage who specializes in locking down and punishing enemies for being caught out, protecting allies from Magic/CC threats, and...Jumping headlong into the enemy team to press R and whatever slot Zhonya's Hourglass happens to be in.

Her kit feels a little all over the place, both being a supportive Champion (giving shields and catching enemies out), a solo-play Champion (Q+W+Thunderlord's), and a weird AP-Pseudo-Diver. Personally, I think Riot should eschew the Black Shield and go full ham with a Controller Support/Control Mage set-up.

And, her character is a fair bit out of place, too - an angel in Runeterra doesn't exactly sound right. Although I'm sure Riot will pull something off with it, I can only imagine Morgana as a dark mage with wings, and I'm hopeful her rework will change that about her.

I could probably think up a scrappy kit, but I'll have to save that for when I have more time to think. Here's hoping some people agree with me, and for those that don't - have fun raising counterarguments or, generally just picking me apart, whichever you choose!

Her ult could be saved if she could simply cast it on an ally instead of herself, that would make it so much better. But would we really want that? Or do we just want a new cooler ultimate that works better for herself?

Her ult makes a good disengage tool. you don't need to flash ult/Zhonyas to try to set up a teamfight. You can very well just layer it with Dark Binding and lock someone down for 3-4 seconds lol.

I am interested to see what they do to her though, she's one of my favorite supports who I sometimes play mid.

From what I heard, the Morgana update would likely change very little as far as gameplay. Maybe a few balance changes here & there. The main goal of the Morg update is to target everything else Morg related, lore, visuals & sounds. Think GP,Tristana or WW level updates, maybe even lower, where the kit stays relatively the same (just with some modernization), but everything else is updated. Now things could change between now & when they get to work on Morg's update, which won't be for a while. Definitely not this year at least.

I think the two biggest things that should see work on a Morgana update from a mechanical perspective are her passive and her ultimate.

Her passive isn't bad, really, it's just... boring. It also doesn't interact terribly well with how often she's taken as a support. Her ultimate is in a similar boat. It works, mostly, but with so many high-mobility champions and armor/magic pen around it's a lot more difficult to use without full team backing or blowing both flash and zonya's to get it off.

Her Q/W/E, on the other hand, are a good example of "simple gameplay, complex interactions" and I hope they stay.

As for fixing her, I'd personally love to see her ultimate be targetable at an arbitrary location. Instead of centering it on her, let her drop it anywhere within, say, a thousand units. Same functionality as it is now, albeit maybe with some damage tuning to account for how much easier it would be to use.

That would take her ultimate from "meh, I often never use this" to "holy crap that's a scary tool and we need to be ready for it," which is what ultimates SHOULD be.

In some early concepts, we considered making Taliyah a 'spite' mage, a cruel sorceress who slings curses and hexes (and otherwise bad vibes) at opponents. Curses on you, your children, your couch, etc. Some Rioters are pretty amused by the idea of a permanently-salty champion, but we'll have to revisit it at a later date.

GIMME MORGANA, FALLEN ANGEL AND HEX WITCH.

I enjoy the passive but would be happy with a new ult.
