Poppy the everything (but ranged) Champ

As a Poppy fan i wanted to share some info on her to those who think she is bad champ from the jokes about her and people who play her as a joke http://i.imgur.com/nKRbGqG.jpg[/IMG HAMMER DIPLOMACY

Poppy is seen as bad

  1. partly due to how she looks as a champ literally half my friends and people i talk to about league say her splash made her seem bad so i didn't play her.
  2. she is also seen as bad due to early game. ( will bring up again when i list why she is good )
  3. her moves are slightly buggy and can mess you up 1/4 of the time.
  4. her animations are pretty out of date and correlate to the point above a great bit.
  5. her E while great in the jungle is pretty bad out in the open.
  6. her ult is hard at times to pin point a target due to possible CC or high damage targets.

Poppy is great because

  1. her Q can lead to a lot of damage if coupled with any of the sheen items can be devastatingly powerful.
  2. her passive can lead to a lot of bait moments. or allow you to stay in fights longer than most and escape with unimaginable health.
  3. her w which i recommend getting first as her and maxing first as well. can lead to great early game sustain coupled with your passive.
  4. her w also gives you a great means of damage early on. to get a early first blood and out damage your lane opponent.
  5. it also gives her a great means of escape with its extra movement speed. (i can't tell you how many times i have outran a Yi or udyr with that shit)
  6. her E can be used to catch up with people nicely when they are low. it can also be used to stun those dumb enough to get to a wall and dive her.
  7. Poppy can go jungle or top. (some people say support but eh depends on the player)
  8. she can go bursty ap, high damage ad, mega tank, & pretty menacing crit poppy.
  9. as AP poppy she can hunt down that 1-2 annoying A-hole while her team hunts down everyone else. (recommend starting with your W for farm)
  10. as AD poppy she can take down that annoying guy and still go for everyone else.
  11. as a tank she can take some serious damage with her W and passive. (sometimes enemy teams go full ad got 500+ armor they couldn't even hurt me)
  12. even with 500 plus armor get that 1 frozen mallet and you still hurt.
  13. with her ult she can either use it on their damage and go them, use it on the support or 1 with least CC and go for everyone else.
  14. her ult gives her bonus damage to the selected target and negates everything even CC from everyone else (once 1 shot a caitlyn was hilarious)
  15. poppy can be fast enough to catch a crap load of champions so don't fear the chase sometimes.
  16. she is a cheap champ.

*Edit: advice wait for your opponent to come close to cs so you can Q them in the early game *

I hope this provided some insight on her as a champion and will make lots of people stop thinking she is bad before playing and learning her.

a message from your friendly poppy fanPoppy

(by all means still make jokes about her like crazy those are funny)

TL;DR - poppy has set backs but is terrifyingly a good champ 8-Bit hero poppy skin idea just throwing it out there to defeat that pesky final boss veigar (be bothered to read it if you want)

lollipoppy art thing by me

I picked "no I hate poppy for no reason" because you ahem clearly made a mistake and didn't put an option for "I hate poppy for a legitimate reason."

Mostly because I'm a big fan of good game design.

Let's look at her abilities one-by-one.

Passive: Valiant Fighter. Cuts damage in half if it exceeds 10% of her current health (note: AFTER reductions). Poppy player's goal with this ability: None. This isn't a passive you can really play around outside of what you chose to build; it means resistances are less important because they might actually make you take MORE damage in some cases, and it means you can build damage over durability a bit more safely. Enemy player's reaction upon seeing this ability for the first time: "Why the hell do I randomly do so little damage to her?" Counterplay (if you know how the ability works, which you can't intuitively) is to do damage less than 10% of her current health sometimes...? So no real counterplay.

Q: Devastating Blow. Next autoattack deals 1.0 total AD, plus 0.6 total AP, plus a flat amount based on ability level, plus 8% of the target's maximum health (health damage has a maximum threshold). Poppy player's goal with this ability: Use it as often as possible. Since it's your main source of damage, you'll probably consider building Lichbane etc to compliment it. Nothing wrong with this on Poppy's side of things. Enemy player's reaction upon seeing this ability for the first time: "Where the hell did all my health go? What did Poppy do to deal all that damage? I guess I'd better just, uh, not get attacked by her." Counterplay is to not get autoattacked... so no real counterplay.

W: Paragon of Demacia. Poppy passively gains armor and AD when she takes damage or autoattacks. She can activate this ability to max out her stacks, on top of gaining bonus movement speed. Poppy player's goal with this ability: Activate it when you're going in to attack; be mindful that as a fight goes on, you will gradually become stronger. This is actually really nice design, in theory. However... Enemy player's reaction upon seeing this ability for the first time: No reaction. Because there's no real way to notice. A stat increase - especially one that works by minute increases bit by bit - is almost impossible to see unless you're actively looking for it. There IS counterplay if you're aware the ability exists - stay out of combat for 5 seconds to reset her stacks - but you aren't going to think to do that unless you're already familiar with her kit.

**E: Heroic Charge. ** Tackles an enemy, carrying them along with her to the target location. Deals bonus damage and stuns if she rams them into an obstacle. Poppy player's goal with this ability: Ram targets into a wall, or away from vulnerable allies, or toward damage... There's a TON you can do with this ability, and it's probably the only well-designed thing on her entire kit. Enemy player's reaction upon seeing this ability for the first time: "Oh, crud! I'd better not stand between her and a wall." Clear, visible counterplay. SO GOOD. If you ask a new player what they think Poppy can do, this is the very first thing that will come to mind. Mostly because they won't know what the hell else she does.

R: Diplomatic Immunity. Picks a single target whom Poppy deals additional damage to. Poppy is immune to damage from ALL OTHER SOURCES (except nexus laser). Poppy player's goal with this ability: Either use this on someone you plan to burst the hell down, or use this on a target who deals very little damage to effectively make yourself invincible. Some good decision-making on Poppy's end, but this ability seems designed as a "duel" sort of situation - the decision-making arises purely because the mechanic is stupidly exploitable. Enemy player's reaction upon seeing this ability for the first time: "What's that particle over my head? Oh crap, Poppy's coming! And she has a shield, which probably means she's going to take less damage! I should run instead of fight."

R (cont'd) Enemy player's reaction upon seeing this ability for the first time cont'd: This assumes that Poppy is actually using the ability as it's designed, going after the target she's marked. Notice that EVEN IN THIS CASE the instinctive reaction is opposite to what should be going on - the targeted player is the only one who can actually hurt Poppy, which means they should probably stand and fight. If they die, it means Poppy's vulnerable to the rest of the team again - win-win for the targeted player.

Alternate reaction: "What's that particle over my teammate's head? Oh crap, Poppy's coming! And she has a shield, which means she's probably going to take less damage! I should run instead of fight." This is the right idea, but for the wrong reason. Poppy is going to smoke you despite the fact that she targeted someone completely different.

Alternate reaction again: "What's this particle over my head? Oh crap, Poppy's going after my allies! As the support or tank or other low-damage class, I should peel for the vulnerable squishies and/or put Poppy into a position where my allies can focus her down. What? They aren't doing damage to her! This is stupid. My team sucks/this game makes no sense and now I am furious." This is pretty much a highlight of why Poppy is a terrible champion. Her ult makes no sense, it pisses everyone off, it runs counter to good game design.

The reason I hate Poppy is because she is poorly-designed and no fun for anybody except the Poppy player.

She's gonna be reworked eventually. No big deal.

I just don't want people to play her, ever, until she's less of a crappy champion.

Baron von Jiggly1 votes

sad part about that is that she is gonna be reworked after sion or who knows who before that.

Sion has literally been taking what feels like 2 years. poppy could take as long or even worse so as i get what your saying but thinking on not playing a her at all for 2-3 years sounds pretty bad on rito's part

Quick question for you, Summoner Baron Von Jiggly, where do you play Poppy the most and in what role? Top lane tank, jungler bruiser, AP melee mid, tank support, etc.?

Couple extra reasons she is considered bad:

  • Extreme mana issues (high mana costs, low mana pool, spam-able abilities)
  • No wave clear, very slow jungle clear

Couple extra reasons I believe Poppy to be good:

  • To add to her Q, the "damage cap" it's suppose to have does not seem to actually function correctly. I have exceeded the damage cap multiple times. (I think the tooltip needs an update.)
  • She is EXTREMELY tanky. Deceptively tanky. Her passive, W, and ultimate all work together to make sure Poppy can jump into a team fight, eliminate a high priority target and walk out unscathed.
  • Lollipoppy has, by far, one of the creepiest splash arts in the game.

i will do whatever feels like its needed at the time with poppy depending on what our team needs more of. but i prefer high damage top so that i can focus down the enemy carries and stop champs like twitch.

extra bad reasons- on the mana cost thats another reason i max W is because that gives you a good enough amount of damage and armor early to farm and survive early. game until you get enough gold for a mana item like the sheen or glacial shroud.

her wave clear she be dependent on waiting a bit for the enemy to push and freezing the lane just wait for last hits instead of trying to lower the minions health your self let the minions do it. most the time i end up with more farm than my adc or mid. the W helps with this as you can guess.

for her jungle clear start red with W and than get blue. don't immediately go using your W to get stacks as that is her most mana consuming spell. save all your mana for your q when you get it after red and your first clear of the jungle should be fine and on the pretty good average of most junglers. most people start her Q for damage reasons but all this does is make you waste mana and not have the armor or damage to quickly get though the monster while you wait for the Q to reproc.

as anyone can say wave clearing gets faster as time goes depending on the situation i recommend her jungle item be Feral flare or spirit of the golem also she can use her Ult and her E to steal camps or epic monsters if needed.

on the extra good reasons- nice points i literally couldn't add every little thing to this list as i was tired at like 1 or 2 in the morning bored waiting for the servers to come back

Why does she STILL have a damage cap for champions on her Q? EVERYONE AND THEIR GRANDMOTHER that have per cent health damage don't have this cap. Elise, no cap. Vayne, no cap. Recently released Gnar, no cap. Lee Sin, no cap.

Baron von Jiggly1 votes

imagine if she didn't have a damage cap on an attack that can already practically 1 shot enemies. she can already practically 2 shot most enemies. not to mention the damage cap only applies to the health bonus damage. the rest you can still build up yourself. her Q goes based on (100%) so that can exceed more than 500 damage plus a sheen to increase further. and it goes (60%) ap which is good enough to do what you would want to do with ap poppy.

Imagine if she wasn't easily kited and didn't have high mana costs. Poppy is a joke on level with Urgot in the current meta.

urgot is actually a really good champion
