Ranked Promo/Series

Have some questions about the ranked promo/series. Is there a better time to go through a new seasons promo? Is it better to promo at the kickoff of a season or mid season, etc. And What is the difference between the first ranked promo you go through after you hit 30 and each reset for the seasons? And How does duo'ing through promo series affect everything? If I duo with a higher ranked player will I be with mostly players at his level or mine?

Back story: When I first started and hit 30 it was mid season and a friend of mine went through promo at beginning of season. He is a night and day difference compared to me playing, he is much better. His win rate was better than mine and he got Bronze 1 and I was placed in Silver 3 with a 5/5 win rate. I steadily dropped and he eventually climbed. Last season I dropped hugely out of silver to like bottom of bronze with a 5/5 win rate again I think. I have two other friends who waited and went through promo later in the season, mid-late, and one got silver 2 and the other got put in gold(he is not a gold player even he says so). Have two other buddies who duo'ed together initially and got placed in silver 2 one not being a silver 2 player at the time and admits he was carried there. One of them has been playing a lot of ranked with some higher tier friends of his. How will this effect his ranked if he goes through promo with the other guy he originally duo'ed with.

Any advice or information about ranked promo and the details of how they work would be appreciated. With the new season getting ready to start I am debating on whether to go through the promo at the start or wait till later in the season. I really don't want to drop like last season.

No there isn't any better times to do season promo's. The closest thing to this might be at the beginning of the season before a new concrete meta shows up but even then it's still probably not going to make much of a difference.

The difference between your first ranked promo and your promo after the season end is that the first promo's you do place you with other unranked or low elo people and place you based soley off of a hidden performance measurement, The promo after a new season takes into account your MMR at the end of the season and the MMR you are at by the end of the pre season and will determine where you are placed based off your promo performance and MMR.

Finally Duoing as far as I know does NOT affect your promo series directly however the MMR of your team will be raised as such you will get people of the higher ranking persons elo with similar MMR to balance things out.

MMR is the sole mechanic behind the ranked system. MMR is a hidden measurement of your skill that determines what sort of players you are matched up against and is gained by winning and lost by losing.

The simple way it works is like this, By winning you gain MMR and the amount you gain is measured by the combined MMR of the enemy team you faced off against, teams with lower MMR give you less MMR while teams with higher MMR increase your MMR by alot. The higher your MMR + depending on the MMR of the enemy teams compared to yours the more LP you gain. If you lose however and the enemy teams MMR is lower than your you lose a large amount of MMR which works in the opposite way if they have a higher MMR. The lower your MMR goes the more LP you lose per game while the higher your MMR goes the more you gain, this is why experienced high elo players suggest dodging games when you're faced with circumstances that you find unfavorable as losing the game will cost you MMR which is valuable for ranking efficiently but if you dodge you still lose 3 LP but your MMR will stay intact.

I forgot to explain this but the main reason I explained MMR is so you'll know that the best way for ranking that high elo players do for making smurf is by conserving their MMR and raising it as high as possible because when you hit your division promo's on any division that is not 1 you can skip multiple divions all together, however you can not skip the 1st or 5th divisions of any league.
