How to nerf Devourer fairly

TurquoiseYoshi··232 votes·7,329 views

And no, I'm not going to say "Just delete it DURHUR"

Devourer is supposed to be bought early, be useless early, and become monstrous late. However, the current one gives Attack Speed worth much more than it costs. Now, how would you nerf this, while still keeping the identity of being very strong late game for on-hit effects? Make the Attack Speed scale with Devourer stacks. For example, every 3 stacks of Devourer, you get 5 Attack Speed. That would add up to 50% at Sated.

Yeah. That's it. There you go. You can upvote and comment now.

Hi welcome to the boards where your opinions are shit, your advice is garbage, you deserve cancer, you’re weak, your bloodline is weak, and you will not survive the winter. takes cover

See, you have to wait until mid-circlejerk, when it's first released everyone is having too much fun with it to want it nerfed. Now, though everyone's sick of it.

Hell no i like to literally destroy everything in my path without giving my enemies time to think about all of the wrong decisions they've made in their life and forever give them the Vietnam Flashback effect anytime they hear or see someone with the almighty Sated Devourer.

Knalxz5 votes

Should have a cap of AS gained otherwise someone who keeps farming would just build like 4 Infinity Edge's and rek.

TurquoiseYoshi46 votes

I feel like it was implied that it capped at Sated. If it wasn't, I sincerely apologize. It would cap at 50%, its live number.

UPfreely7 votes

honestly they would have to buff it significantly if it gave no stats on purchase

NineTailedMystic13 votes

You mean the base 30 magic damage on hit?

Wumachine43 votes

I reckon make it have 20% base attack speed and just have it gain 1% attack speed per stack

Dotrix23 votes

20% base attack speed and 1% per stack is actually a really smart balance between the two.

CoolKnightST4 votes

I have a better idea:

#Devourer

  • Stats: +40% attack speed, +20 on-hit magic damage
  • Passive: Unchanged however stacks now grants additional bonusses between
  • 10 stacks: +10% attackspeed
  • 20 stacks: +15 on-hit magic damage
  • 30 stacks: transforms into Sated Devourer
    • UNIQUE Passive - PHANTOM HIT: Every 3th basic attack will be a phantom attack that triggers on-hit effects twice.
TurquoiseYoshi4 votes

That would actually give more early game boosts. Attack speed isn't great early, but on-hit damage is. The raw stats Devourer would give would actually get better from that.

CoolKnightST12 votes

The current devour gives +50% attack speed, +30 on-hit magic damage...

TurquoiseYoshi9 votes

You know, I'm an idiot XD. Thanks for correcting me.

Caeler4 votes

I don't think that'd work very well mainly because losing the attack speed from the daggers/recurve bow doesn't make much sense. You'd need 18 stacks to catch back up to the attack speed you would have had if you hadn't upgraded to Devourer. At the very least, the item needs to give the 30% attack speed from the items it builds out of. CoolKnightST's idea makes a bit more sense in this regard.

Zeke Maelstorm1 votes

Well item 1043 only gives 30% AS so it could scale from 30% to 50%.

Devourer is not supposed to be useless early and monstrous late. It is supposed to be balanced at every stage of the game. How to balance it? Remove Sated devourer, and let Devourer stack indefinitely instead.

TurquoiseYoshi2 votes

Ummmmmm... I don't know about that. The Cinderhulk changes were based around Devourer being the premier late-game jungle item. Sated in its entirety is based around that notion. I don't know why you think that live Devourer is always supposed to be equally balanced at every stage.

It doesn't make sence, to force a class of champions to be late game focused, because of their type of damage application (Autoattacks) and their position (Jungle).

Devourer does stack, but other items do get stronger too (Botrk because enemys get more and more health, Rabadons because you get more and more AP etc.). And other jungle items get stronger in the late game too: Cinderhulk has %-health-amplification, Runeglaive has an AP scaling, Warriors armor penetration scales with damage from other items. So that Devourer gets better is not really special. It is just that the idea of Sated Devourer is insane and stupid. Champions with built in on hit effects benefit way too much. Almost everyone is forced to build Botrk seconds, because it is op, there is no build diversity, and overall sated devourer is too strong in the late game.

I have a thought brewing ...

item 3044 into item 3930 item 3931 item 3932 item 3933 or item 3124 Guinsoo's Rageblade could be incorporated into Devourer.

I like how Rageblade works already. Maybe they can improve on it at the same time?

This would not be much different from Bami's Cinder building into either Cinderhulk or Sunfire Cape.

item 3751 into item 3709 item 3717 item 3721 item 3725 or item 3068 Bami's Cinder already builds into Cinderhulk.

Can use the same idea of this build path.

I swear I didn't cheat off your post to make mine...

I think that's a great move, as I explained off my other post. However, gotta note:

  1. The item needs something to get it running early during ganking (my vote: either MS or even a slight slow that builds to 16%ish), and
  2. Rageblade needs to be reworked into something else anyway, and a new sub-item needs to be made to build into the both of them (since Rageblade costs more than the jungle item should on its own).

That said, this is the direction I want to go.

I don't dislike, but you're putting an even greater onus on scuttle-dragon control. They simply give too many stacks.

TurquoiseYoshi6 votes

True. I personally don't mind scuttler-dragon control being pushed for, as they are very important objectives, and they can be under-appreciated in Solo Queue.

I can agree with that. Amusingly enough, at my crappy elo, i rarely see our Jungler taking crab/Dragon

TurquoiseYoshi3 votes

Hell, I, a jungle main, will admit having problems with that.

Fadedpf2 votes

And make it much harder to get stacks so a 1/0/1 Udyr doesn't get it at 18 minutes and destroy everything.

TurquoiseYoshi5 votes

Well, lowering the early attack speed is lowering the early clear speed and gank potential.

FistOfSharkiesha4 votes

I support this but I'm still not really satisfied with the change. Junglers like Udyr and Yi who have monstrous sustain/clear speed will still have no trouble sating or going in for a gank at full hp. Meanwhile the underdogs Shen, Jax, etc will suffer horribly from this change. That's not really a problem that can be fixed with the devourer though, so I guess I'm going off topic. I'd like for the blades to be exchangeable. Right now if you build ranger's trailblazer your smite is useless lategame, but some junglers really need it to be viable. If you could swap that out, lategame junglers like Jax, Wukong, etc would still be viable, but sating would be more fair.

I feel like then everybody would start trailblazer / sated, then swap out for challenging / sated.

FistOfSharkiesha2 votes

But what's the issue with that? That's exactly what would help curb Udyr and Yi's strong presence early game. They usually buy chilling smite anyways. They don't need help clearing so they're building straight into chilling/skirmishing. The other junglers with poor clear can buy ranger's then skirmishers later. This would really just open up options for struggling junglers and not give anything to strong junglers like shyv udyr yi. I'd rather an Udyr clear slightly faster than be able to slow me so he can rip my face off.

Dextix LT2 votes

Nah, lets jujst nerf cinderhulk and maybe warrior, that will fix devourer? Right guys? (Rito 2015)

TenSlashTen2 votes

thats actually intelligent. However you'd have to buff the shit out of it at that point.. Since you literally jsut removed half the stats the item gives lol.

TurquoiseYoshi3 votes

The stats are still there, they just show up later.

The Loveless2 votes

It's just cancerous no matter which way you slice it. Just make it a regular AS+onhit item. Get rid of this extra bullshit stacking and double effects.

foinhas1 votes

daily reminder that devourer costs 2250 and not 1400

TurquoiseYoshi1 votes

I'm not sure what you're trying to say. Can you explain?

planters1 votes

It means you dont get it immediately. It takes probably 10-15 minutes to get.

TurquoiseYoshi2 votes

It costs the same amount as every other jungle item.

maikokk1 votes

id rather see them do something like doubling the effectiveness of on hit effects every other attack... instead of creating A NEW ATTACK with zero AD... exit kayle devourer... exit vayne devourer....

TurquoiseYoshi2 votes

Those two champions are not the worst abusers of this item, and both scale well with AS anyway. Both will build AS items whether they have Devourer or not.

High51 votes

I love exaggerations. It scales up, yes. It's not unbeatable. If you adjust your strategy accordingly, it's a reasonably balanced item.

I thought the funniest thing I'd seen is UoL who tried to Kayle mid with devourer. It's not runeglaive OP and runeglaive wasn't that OP either.

TurquoiseYoshi3 votes

It still gives a ton of power late, traded for slightly less damage early. If the early weakness was more pronounced, it would be a lot better imo. Kinda like the problem with Vayne.

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

Brilliant idea. Kudos.

TurquoiseYoshi2 votes

Thanks. Means a lot to know one of my ideas isn't complete horse shit XD

Maikal1 votes

I can understand your frustration with dealing with devourer junglers, or just the meta in it's current state, but this nerf is wayyy too harsh. It's supposed to be a late game item, which it is. If you want early game pressure, warrior or cinderhulk (or both, depending on the champ) are still better. This change would literally make it so that you're so useless that unless all of your lanes solo win the game is auto lost. Stacking that item from behind when you lose map control early is impossible. You don't get sated until post 30 minutes, if at all.

TurquoiseYoshi2 votes

I can see what you mean. However, this is to pressure the entire team to get the Devourer Sated, either by getting scuttler/dragon or by counterjungling a lot. This is supposed to be a team game, and if the team isn't working together, you should lose. If the entire team works together to get this one carry ridiculously powerful, then you deserve to win.

Additionally, it's like playing a match where Amumu is your jungler. Just assume you won't get ganks XD

AbodyHUN6661 votes

I would happily accept a reasonable nerf like this if it gave stacks for destroying towers. With Yi there are times when I solo kill 2 towers in a lane while the enemies are just dicking around trying to force a teamfight, and I gain no stacks from it.

TurquoiseYoshi2 votes

I wouldn't mind this idea. It adds another reason for players to go for objectives.
