Azir

I need a mid lane champ to play, because I can play everything except mid, and Azir seems interesting. I dont want to play Yasuo because... reasons, and I dont want to save up 6300 IP with no refunds for a bad champ... Should I buy?? Azir Edit: Please give suggestions as to who I could buy mid lane who isn't in a bad spot in the meta, but isn't one of those picks like Katarina, Yasuo, and Zed.

Ahem...

_Welcome, potential Shuriman Acolyte! Witness the glory of our emperor, Azir! _

Lauded as championship winner ever since his release, and with nothing holding him back but himself, Azir has carved out a niche for himself as one of the most powerful mages to ever grace the Fields of Justice!

But this awesome power is not for the weak at heart, for Azir demands his summoners to have the utmost dedication and skill to properly represent Shurima.

To fully master Azir, you must understand:

  • Kiting
  • Last hitting
  • Tower pushing
  • Seiging
  • Orb walking
  • Positioning
  • Map awareness
  • Micromanagement
  • Your opponent
  • That you have no health early game
  • That you will be a golden sack of gold until you get your items
  • That you have no CC to speak of say a slow and a long cooldown ultimate, meaning that you will bring little to the team but damage
  • In a team full of squishy carries you will die time and time again with no chance to hurt things
  • That you are team oriented
  • That you are dependent on the lategame in a meta focused on early game domination and snowballing to a quick victory
  • That your trading in lane is peanuts compared to meta mages that will not hesitate to blast you into obvliion every time you stand still to go through a soldier AA animation
  • That you run out of mana doing your W>Q combo faster than other mages
  • That you are quite slow

But! If you are willing to brave these obstacles, like so many before you, then you will be an unstoppable force, a sandstorm of retribution! ######Provided you have peel and position well, have a team that has a frontline and can stall till late, or can feed you kills to speed the process up, etc.

It's inputing a movement command mid auto-attack, so the auto still goes off but much of the animation is cancelled, so you can either kite or chase more efficiently.

Overall I would say don't buy azir:

  • really hard
  • not in a good place stat wise
  • likely to get a rework anyways

But I'm a super biased aurelion main who doesn't like any other mid laners XD AurelionSol AurelionSol AurelionSol

røckstãr1 votes

Well I wouldn't say "really hard" is a reason not to buy a champ, but he does seem in a sort of bad spot right now, even though I love his design and the champ overall. What other mid laners would you suggest? Not AurelionSol

Snake Town1 votes

Syndra I have a lot fun with syndra: good at most stages of the game, good 1v1 and teamfight, offers a rewarding learning curve, and can do most about anything.

I agree that really hard isn't a reason not to buy a champ (I'm a level 5 azir myself and love the guy), the thing is though right now there isn't a big reward that comes with mastering him.

The only other mids I personally play somewhat regularly are TwistedFate and Leblanc. Tf can carry but needs to snowball, Lb is just a disgustingly good champ overall if you like assassins.

TyrekGoldenspear1 votes

What snake town said.

That being said, he's due for a Shyv level rework, so nothing wrong with saving up the IP in case you like the rework. If you don't then simply buy another 6300 champ.

røckstãr1 votes

How do I know what the rework looks like? I used to play old ww and now the new one is just bs

TyrekGoldenspear1 votes

You won't until they announce it.

Until then you can save up the IP. If you go over the amount you can spend the extra on other stuff, but keep the 6300 for Azir.

When the rework is announced, you have your chance to see.

røckstãr1 votes

Oh, ok. Thanks for the advice. Hopefully they dont change much about him as I like his concept.

Divewing1 votes

They said they were considering moving power from Q to W. Asides from that we are pretty much in the dark.

Spicy Rice1 votes

Orb walking, AKA stutter stepping, is the act of moving and attacking utilizing animation canceling. It is a highly usefull skill that allows you to cs quickly, chain abilities between autos, and chase down and run away from an opponent while continually damaging them

The term was highly used in DoTA, and therefore is used amongst the older fans of MOBAs.

Hes very fun to play, but takes a loooooottttttt of practice to do well with. He is still quite strong late game but his early game is sorta potato. I do enjoy playing him from time to time.

Other mid lane suggestions?

Incarceration1 votes

Try out Cassiopeia. She's a hypercarry. However, she has some really bad matchups (Yasuo but can be won and Leblanc gg ur screwed)

Chroud2 votes

My personal favorite mid laners currently,

Zigs,Fiddlesticks, and (Jayce)

røckstãr1 votes

Ziggs seems pretty fun, plus I dont have many mages.

Supreme Senpai691 votes

Veigar. He's like a mage Nasus with hard AoE cc.

DEmperor952 votes

I can summarize Azir for you to help you make a decision.

Fun Factor: Extremely fun and rewarding to learn and master.

Learning Curve: High skill floor and very high skill cap. Takes a lot of practice to play decently and a whole lot more practice to master completely. He's even a bit harder to get into than he's supposed to since his numbers can make him feel undertuned right now.

Carry Potential: Carries very hard starting in the mid-late game after 2-3 items if learned sufficiently. If mastered completely, however, he's an extreme hypercarry threat all game long, as long as he didn't lose lane and can get his items.

Matchups: Azir struggles a lot in many matchups against long range burst mages and assassins. If he's compeletely mastered however, it becomes slightly easier to manage these matchups and sometimes win them even. Back when he wasn't as underpowered as now, an Azir master can win a lot more easily against every matchup.

Power Curve: Weak early game but has good harass and is quite safe. Mid game is really strong with 2 items after level 9 unless enemy team is so far ahead. Late game is downright busted provided you can live long enough to melt everything.

I highly recommend you pick him up, unless you want something that can be learned quickly and is purely for climbing elo. If he gets buffed again though (which he is supposed to), he can be top tier for climbing when mastered.

røckstãr1 votes

Sounds fun and all, but what are the downsides? I might just save the IP and buy him so once he gets buffed I'll already have learned him.

Joes1 votes

His damage is bad, He does everything so well and that is why riot nerfed him. He can engage, disengage, poke, dps, aoe cc, very mobile if done right.

DEmperor951 votes

His damage is kinda low before items and before level 10, then he starts ramping up to the same power level of pre-nerf Azir afterwards. He can do work if play him well, but in some games the burden of overnerfed low damage can be felt and it hurts. But at least you'll have a lot of fun getting better at him.

Pimasterchampion1 votes

bad mid game w bases gets 155 ap from first 2 items depends on team a lot of frontline and peel useless if behind not much cc

Luxs Destiny1 votes

If yer looking to get into Azir, you need to wait until he's not suffering from overnerf-itis. He was an amazing mage when first released, then was gutted so that he's nigh unviable, imo. I would go for something like Talon or Ziggs or Xerath or even just Annie. Learn to play mid, learn to roam, when you should freeze lane, when to push lane, when to abuse the other mid laner's mistakes, how to tell if you're being ganked, how to escape a gank, how to create pressure from mid lane alone, etc.

Mizuki Zahra1 votes

i bought him jus recently cause of the kingdom skin and i gotta say azir is fun but don't expect to carry, hes more of a mid lane team support champ kinda like playing sion mid you just help the team as much as you can until you reach a decent cs score

SSJTribe1 votes

If you want someone that can lane pretty effectively and is safe and easy to play, I'd suggest Morgana .

Her W can oneshot caster minions at rank 3, her passive gives her free hp from farming this way. Black Shield makes you safe from enemy CC, and her Q and Ult make for free kills when your JG ganks for you. Build is: item 3165 item 3020 item 3157 item 3116 item 3151 item 3089 with Deathfire Touch Keystone. I'm at about 70% winrate this season with this.

Q/W

Good job you won the trade and 1/2 to 1/3 of their HP is gone

Vathriel1 votes

As an Azir main in low elo with a winrate that hovers around 70%:

Most people here are right on track. The biggest thing comes to being dedicated enough to learn him. I've carried tons of matches with him, but there are some obvious difficulties which mostly arise from his early game numbers. His late game, like previously stated is purely busted. Rarely have I lost a match that went past 35 minutes or so when I'm playing Azir. Even Azir's early game can be quite a threat (which most people don't realize). This is due to the frequency at which his W AA Q AA AA can be performed.

If you can orb walk fairly well, last hitting with your basic autos should be no problem and you should be able to save enough mana to simply harass your laner out of the lane, if not kill them. In addition at low elo many people underestimate your ult's range and it's fairly easy to bait them into being thrown into the tower for a free kill. Again there are tons of other mechanics that need to be mastered with Azir to ever get decent at him. And again I mean decent, as in a 50-55% winrate is usually unheard of because of the sheer number of matches you need with him to really get good at him.

Basically my opinion: Get him if you're willing to spend a lot of time and dedication to get good at him. Don't get him if you're going to switch champions in under a month.

Side note: Against many of Azir's "counters" Azir's level 2 out damages theirs by quite a lot. You can usually push them out of lane with a W AA Q AA AA and thunderlords prock without taking much damage yourself. Like any champion, don't follow build guides, I frequently shift my build for every matchup and how the enemy is playing stylistically. Against most matches I recommend bringing barrier, your goal as Azir early is not as much to get kills as to survive, kills are a luxury. Remember you're a lategame hypercarry, even if you go even with your enemy, you outscale them 90% of the time. That means you're technically ahead. I can provide other tips as well if you message me in client.

Don't make the same mistake i made, don't buy Azir

I suggest syndra, a much better mage who's pretty fun, not too easy, not too hard and always a strong pick

Looknook1 votes

Uhhh I don't recommend Azir as he has an incredibly high learning curve and is one of the few Champions actually balanced around pro play.

Other mids that I might recommend, well, they really depend on preference.

Do you enjoy shooting your opponent from far away and comboing him to death? Velkoz is great at that.

Do you want more team focus with great waveclear and lazors? Viktor, be warned his E takes practice to hit things with.

Do you want waveclear and assignation combined with a get out of jail free card? Ekko.

Do you wanna miss all of your abilities before saying screw it, ulting your enemies and killing them regardless? Syndra

Stars Shaper1 votes

Syndra is a solid pick right now and helps you learning to manage characters that put themselves in risky situation.

Azir seems on the weak side of the roster right now but I've not played him much recently.

Viktor Taliyah and also Varus are decent picks too.

AirKingNeo1 votes

If you need a good anti-assassin anti-yasuo who's easy to play, Kayle is the answer. Problems: You need either flat 10% CDR runes or scaling to 20% runes. Otherwise you'd build Trinity/Morello second item.

swain? can go top as well and is lane bully

I used to main Azir back in the day and he is definitely not a good pick up for someone that doesn't play mid. My current mid lane mains that I enjoy and have a lot of success with are Akali and Corki. You can even pick up both of them for the same price as Azir. Akalis truthfully not that good either right now but if you put a little time into her she can do decent. Corki on the other hand is amazing and I highly recommend him.

My build for Akali consist of item 3146 (rush first every game), item 3001 (second if they have a lot of ap) or item 3157 (if they are more ad based) Most games you're going to want to pick up both of them. If you're not losing hard to ap when you finish gunblade definitely go into zhonyas, item 3116 , item 3135 and your sorc shoes. If their team doesn't have any high damage ap or they only have one, Swap abyssal for Randuins, deadman's, or sunfire cape just to give you more survivability. Avoid lich bane and rabadons unless you're really far ahead and want to end the game early.

My build for Corki is item 3078 (rush first. Get sheen asap and then phage because you really don't need the stinger), item 3146 (great synergy with his passive plus the active), item 3135 or item 3094 (you want both but I usually switch which one i get first depending on if they're stacking mr), and the last item can be a ton of things. If you need extra damage go for IE but if you're dying to fast I'd get Maw/Banshee's veil or what I usually do which is get sterak's gauge.

Usually get sorc shoes second on both of them.

Hope that helped but I strongly encourage you to try corki. He is a great champion atm and is really strong when played right.

I think Azir is fun, but it's true when people say that, right now, he's high skill cap with little reward.

I consider Twisted Fate to be the "standard" mid laner. He's been in a pretty good place as far as I can remember, and I never hear people complain about his OP-ness. He takes a while to master, and the only way to really get better at him is by playing him a lot (as opposed to watching guides on him and stuff).
Other than TF, Ryze is a pretty good mid laner to pick up. He teaches you a lot about combos and fast decision making.

But that's just my Tencents. Hope that helps! [slayer-jinx-wink]

CorruptedScythe1 votes

Ahri is the go-to standard mid laner. She's mobile, does decent damage, has sustain, and carries hard when ahead while not being too terrible when behind. She's easy to pick up and hard to master.

Guy Fox Teemo1 votes

Cassiopea Brand Ahri and Lux are all really great picks that aren't spammed too often (Maybe Lux and somewhat ahri)
