@RIOT Amumu's New Passive Was Not What He Needed At All.

Hi, I've been an Amumu main since I started playing the game in the preseason of S4. Ever since I hit Platinum in S5, I've always had a struggle maining Amumu past MID Plat due to his vulnerable early game and generally sub par pre 6 map pressure compared to META junglers.

See the issue? _**

                         Amumu's Core issues (Early Game)

He's reliant on blue buff, easily counter jungled, has an easily avoidable singular form of engage on a long CD early game, 1 rotation of spells at lvl 6 runs him essentially OOM, high impact ultimate on a 2 minute and 30 second cooldown makes him terribly mediocre at applying pressure around the map when it's on CD.

New Passive Pros ☺: ☺ - More impactful teamfighter ☺ - Better against champions with 100+MR (Tanks, MR stackers) ☺ - Better synergy with Magic damage compositions. ☺ - Stronger late mid game and late game. Cons ☹: ☹ - Slower clear speeds. ☹ - More susceptible to counter ganks ☹ - Worse synergy with magic penetration ☹ - Much worse against squishy targets. ☹ - More reliant on team. ☹ - Suffer through early game even more.

I don't see why RIOT decided to empower his strong points which are already working relatively well (strong but not overpowered) and making him even worse where he is most vulnerable. He didn't need buffs to make him better against tanks or buffs where he can deal more damage late game, he already did those two things well either as a tank or AP OFFtank with %maxHP shred (and if you wanted more item 3151). What he needed were some buffs so he could compete in the early game meta by not being completely crippled if blue was stolen, and not getting ruined by META junglers which can apply triple the pressure he does, clear faster and still not be gated by mana or CD.

I think this will make him an unbalanced late game terror with magic comps and a nightmare to itemize against, that's if he can make it to late game that is, but his core issues will still remain and he still will have his early game issues but only worse now.

He'll be stronger early game too.

I worked out the numbers.

His new passive is batshit strong.

Care to share? Because at lvl 7 Amumu can reduce a champions MR by 33.9 with only Magic pen quints, marks and passive. All ranged champions have 30 MR with no items and melee champions tend to have 38 MR on average by lvl 7. With only item 3136 or item 3020 early on you will always do true damage unless they build MR. So this is a significant nerf for Amumu's early game damage and always a nerf in regards to doing damage against squishes.

I made an entire topic about it.

But before you read that I'm going to debunk some of your assumptions.

  1. No, Amumu could not reduce a champion's MR by 33.9. He could shred their MR by 20 and penetrate 13.9 MR with marks and quints (which experience tells me is a rare build anyways).
  2. Almost everybody runs flat MR glyphs. Check your calculations against that.

1 and 2. Shredding and penetration is essentially the same thing except penetration doesn't show the targets MR to be reduced visually so it would still deal true damage. item 3020 800 gold invested to negate the the MR glyphs and they very unlikely to start investing in defense items until their first 2 items.

  1. No they aren't. They really, really, really aren't. Just for one thing, shred applies first.
  2. I personally do not give a shit about AP 'mumu's power level, and as such bringing up things that only AP mumu would build (Mpen quints, Sorc shoes) means less than nothing to me.

  1. I'm aware it applies first and it still effectively allows you to do true damage if the total calculation renders the targets MR to 0.

  2. Alright, well these are things I buy sometimes depending on how squishy the team and it's quite effective while still being a pure tank after that.

Look, dude, I know you've got this fetish for "effectively true damage", but as I went over in the topic I linked, it's better to think of it in terms of damage increased. Because that's what MR is. A decrease in incoming magic damage.

I read your entire post on the topic and I don't see how you're so certain the new passive outstrips his old one at level one considering you didn't even calculate it as far as I can see. You only did math for his old passive not his new one.

LyingOnLine1 votes

I didn't have to. It's a flat out 15% damage increase.

Just want to point out a few things.

His old passive is awkward against multi-monster camps, and while the idea that Flat Pen is stronger in the early game than %amp, this particular %amp is HUGE and does make up for the flat pen's removal, even in the early game.

How is dealing 200 magic damage and getting +30 true damage huge? Amumu can nearly nearly always deal true damage during the early game with MP quints and marks + item 3020/ item 3136 and passive. This makes all magic damage deal true damage to that target, not just +15% bonus true dmg.

TehNACHO2 votes

Because in the early game, a +30 damage buff is in fact incredibly significant.

Because Penetration can not penetrate Armor or Magic Resist below 0, meaning that if you opt to use MP runes and early MP items, you're wasting that efficiency against squishies, ESPECIALLY most Jungle camps.

It's the difference between doing effectively true damage, or almost/effectively true damage with a +15% damage amp.

Well I agree with magic penetration, but let's remember Amumu's passive is magic reduction, so if a camp has -10 MR it will have -25 after Amumu's passive is applied thus effectively amplifying his magic dmg by more. Secondly in the majority of cases your MP will only reduce a squishes MR a little below 0 like -3 - 5 so very little is wasted past the 0 mark and then it's expected that they will buy MR at some point.

Amumu is a late game character. Sadly he just wont keep us as well for that reason. Making him able to keep up with the early game champs while still having that late game would be bat shit broken. As we can see he isnt the strongest champ and this is because due to his simplistic kit he isnt allowed to have high levels of power in the kit. He gets to have some impactful abilities but if we give him too much he just becomes overpowered. He doesnt have restriction and difficulties on doing what he does so it forces riot to make decisions about where they funnel his power. With amumu they have funneled his power into late game teamfighting.

They buffed his W as well, which should increase his clear speeds.

Its kinda like "The buff he deserves but not the buff he needs" - I guess we will c how this works out but im REALLY scared that this will make him really strong and they will just nerf other parts of his kit.
