Tank stats don't matter unless you're a top laner, jungler, or pretty much any role but support.

I'm a support main and here lately ranked has been frustrating the absolute crap out of me. One game, an illaoi without a single true tank item (cleaver, boots of swiftness, and trinity force), became so ridiculously tanky that she was impossible to shut down, even when her ult was down. The game before that it was a swain, even as a thresh with close to 200 stacks, eye of the equinox, ninja tabi, banshee's veil, spirits visage, and Warden's mail (was working on randuins), i didn't come even close to tanking the amount that he did, with his build of a rod of ages, zhonyas hourglass, abyssal septor, and rylais septor. This happens all the time, i pick a tanky support, trying to work with my teams comp, and i just end up getting shredded mercilessly unless my entire team is ahead. If a top laner is behind, he can build tanky and remain relevant late game. This doesn't seem to work with supports. At all. Despite the math adding up to me having far, far more hp, armor, and magic resist (not to mention flat damage reduction from bond of stone and ninja tabi's passive), and a full set of tank runes (+16 armor and magic resist), and masteries, they still end up being far far more tanky than i am. What is this logic? what is this math? Does riot have a secret hidden algorithm that takes any support laner in draft pick and cuts their arm and mr effectiveness down to 1/3? it certainly feels that way.

Let me put it this way; you don't build tanky as a Support so you can get in front and take all the hits. You build tanky so you can do your job without getting one shot or not be too afraid to get close to the team fight.

Levels provide a lot of raw stats and supports are pretty much always behind solo-laners (and junglers) in levels.

If they had even a three level lead on you, that's a massive bonus gold-wise.

Personally, I don't even consider Thresh a Tank support. While you do have you hook for catching out people, you really don't have the engage to be a Vanguard. (Like Leona or Alistar) And you don't have enough defensive mechanics, (heals, defense boosts, immunity, etc) to be an effective Warden either. (Like Braum or Taric)

Basically, Thresh is a Utility support, will very little dependents on items. But you build tanky, (if your not otherwise building generic utility items) because that's the only think that's otherwise useful.

I mention this because, way back when thresh was actually strong. People commented how his kit is so strong that he would be good, regardless of where his stats were at. (is that not true anymore? why wouldn't it be true?)

As for Tank supports in general. Duo lane XP, no Farm, Expected to buy support items. (Which will be objectively weaker tank items) I freaking laugh at anyone who tell the support that they need to be the team tank. (No seriously, I'll die as fast as anyone) And even the tankest of Supports typically get that way because of their kit, rather than items. (Alistar with his ultimate is a good example, Braums Unbreakable and Tarics Ult are also good) But this tends to result in a lot more windowed levels of tankyness. which probably won't last the whole fight.

each level is a kill's worth of gold in pure tank stats, in addition to the damage of extra spell ranks

In addition to the other comments, Illaoi are Swain are super high sustain champions. Illaoi a juggernaut, while swain is the mage equivalent called a battle mage.

Support Tank abilities are based around locking down enemies or protecting allies, not protecting themselves. Generally top laners, whether they are juggernauts or tanks, have some sort of innate survivability in their kit that no support can compare to. These range from raw stat bonuses like Malph and Poppy's Ws, to active healing like Illaoi's tentacles or Darius' Q.

Another thing to note is that, on top of having weaker innate damage mitigation than real tanks, support tanks don't provide the same level of threat that they do, so when an enemy is attacking you they aren't saving anything to CC you or to get away - an enemy ADC is going to be a lot more liberal in autoattacking you than in autoattacking a Malphite who may or may not have their ultimate up.
