Why Does Smartcast not work?

I've been away from the game for a while, and only recently got back; here's the problem I found:

  • Normal Cast mode: clicking ability hotkey activates targeting circle/cone/etc, and subsequent left click activates ability on target.
  • Smart Cast mode (old version): targeting animations are skipped entirely. pressing hotkey activates ability on target cursor is placed over/nearest to.
  • Smart Cast mode (new version): pressing hotkey down reveals targeting circles, etc. releasing hotkey activates ability.

So what is the problem, you ask??? Single target abilities land on non-minion targets about 1 in 3 attempts to cast. I say "attempts to cast" because often times you can, in a team fight, etc, press the same hotkey for a single target ability 3-4 times, having it targeted correctly (you think) but never have the ability do anything--no mana spent, no animation, no nothing--just like you never gave an order at all. This is very frustrating for, say, a support trying to use a shield on an ally. On the other hand, it has little if any impact on AOE or Skill-Shot abilities.

This is, I am assuming, an intentional change made by Riot. ** If anyone can shed light on _WHY_ it works this way now, please tell me. If there is some way to change this in settings, _PLEASE_ tell me. If there is some kind of _workaround_, or technique to _reduce the frustration**_ caused by this, I would be glad to hear it. The fact that the previously easiest to use abilities in the game are now next to impossible to land is driving me crazy.

You can turn off the range indicator on smart casting. Its in the settings in game. Go into a custom and look for it. I haven't used range indicators at all since season 2

I greatly prefer the quickcast (press and release), as it lets me rapidly fire abilities, or see targeting range if needed. If you are having range issues, just try to buffer the abilities (you automatically walk into range and cast as soon as possible). Spamming inputs tends to mess up attempts at casting targeted abilities, especially right at the edge of your range.
