One Way You Could do Ranked Teambuilder [In-Depth Idea]
I have an idea of one way you guys at Riot could make Ranked Teambuilder. And since I'm not a game designer, obviously you guys don't have to do it this way, I'm just suggesting a way :) I think Ranked Teambuilder could really improve the behaviors and gameplay of many in ranked. This idea is up for tweaking and changing, if you have a suggestion, feel free to say it, who knows it might help Riot :P (Just be respectful to each other)
-
**So you'd press the Play button and select Ranked Teambuilder **(I'm guessing it could be solo or duo, with your duo selecting their role while you do)
-
**Then a menu would come up, letting you choose your role. **Top, Jng, Mid, Adc, or Supp. I understand that this slightly enforces meta, but I mean if you want to do duo top or something like that you could just do it in regular ranked. Plus, nobody does that anyways, because people would be negative about it.
-
Once you've chosen your role, you'd be immediately sent into Queue to find teammates to fill out the other roles. * (Just like in current TB)*
-
Once it has found those teammates it will find an opposing team for you, probably all while the queue timer still goes, for simplicity. (similar to the regular TB, only with the queues joined together for simplicity)
-
Once it's found all 10 players, it's going to have the "Ready or Cancel" popup, if a player declines, the system simply finds a player to fill that role. (nothing new here)
-
After every player accepts, they will all be sent into the regular draft-mode champion select to choose bans & choose your champions based on the role you chose. ~ I guess for the clarity of knowing who is going where, you could have the roles under/above the Summoner names, or something like that. (only for teammates ofc) ~ I would highly recommend having a "switch roles" option in the champion select, since in regular ranked, people agree to switch sometimes because they see that the enemy chose a champion they aren't good against or something of similar nature. I'm not sure how you could implement that UI-wise, but League's UI is really good, so I'm sure the Rioters in that team could figure something out :) Of course, just like swap-champ option, there would be a "Agree or Decline" option, so that they can't just steal your role without your consent of swapping.
~ And of course, the swap champions option should still be there, if you want a champ before the other team gets it, but you're last pick!
Some things I'd like to point out before someone mentions them in comments and arguments start:
- This is a suggestion, not a demand. In no way am I trying to rush Riot, I'm just giving them my opinion on something I'd like. If other players feel differently, then they can post what they'd like in a respectful manner. :)
- Yes it is possible for someone to say they are going one role, but when the game starts they actually go somewhere else. Thing, people can already do that. But they don't, or at least I haven't seen it. Why? Because it's pointless, especially in TB where you get the role you want ahead of time.
- My suggestion allows players to choose the role they want, while still having the competitive Ban/Pick draft mode everybody wants. :) If you have any ideas of how we could improve/change the idea, feel free to post your thoughts below.
- Even though the queue times for more popular roles will be longer (just like in regular TB), I'm sure many players can agree that it is worth the extra time. And if they disagree, then they can just continue to play Regular Ranked.
- I'm not exactly how League does their ranked/mmr/elo stats, but I'm guessing your rank in TB-Tanked and Regular-Rank would be the same, but the queues will be different. Like I said, I'm definitely no game designer, but this way seems the most simply to me.
- I understand that adding this mode would break up player bases and extend queue times for players in high-elos who already receive long ones. The only idea I have that could help that situation is disabling Ranked-TB for Diamond or Master+, since the higher elos probably do not fight/argue over roles as much. (Or at least I would hope not) If you have an idea on how to fix it, please post it.
EDIT 1: The idea of Team Builder for Ranked isn't to encourage only being skillful in one role. It's to minimize confusion and fighting over roles in Ranked so that they can focus on more important matters such as countering, synergizing, figuring out what runes/masts to take, and heck even choosing what skin you wanna use. People that want this feature don't want it because they think not playing their main role makes them lose games, they want it because they either have more fun in the role they choose, or they are tired of teammates becoming toxic for the rest of the game because of roles, whether it involved them directly or not. For example, I usually pick support since I main it. I rarely get people wanting it, but when I do I give it to them and that's fine. Unfortunately, my teammates do not have the same mindset. They will be toxic to each other all game, and possibly even purposely throw the game (for example, leading the person into a trap and leaving them to die, purposefully). Basically, Teambuilder for Ranked as a whole is to help the players that simply want to play the game without conflict. I genuinely believe that with TB implemented for Ranked, the amount of conflicts in Champion Select will drop like 80% or more.
- Yes I know that TB for Ranked doesn't solve all types of problems in Ranked. But that's not the point. The point is to let people play the roles they were born for, without conflict. Simple as that :)
EDIT 2: Guys I honestly don't think the queue time is going to be that bad. In fact it will probably be shorter than what the regular ranked queue will be when they add TB. I mean of course there's more tops and mids than support and jungle and adc, but it's not such a difference that you'd be waiting for 10 minutes.... Keep in mind how many people play League daily. I don't know the exact numbers but I'm guessing it's huge. EDIT 2.5: Yes some players will be boosted slightly mmr wise because they get to choose the role their best at. But there's things that you have to improve regardless of role/rank in order to be considered a high-skill player. For example:
- Good Decision Making. Doesn't matter if your Katarina mechanics are great, if you make bad decisions constantly (like 1v5ing when you're behind) then you will not win.
- Adapting to situations. examples include buying the best items based on enemy or ally team, synergizing with your team comp wise, countering enemy, knowing where you should ward based on situation (defensive or aggressive?), the list goes on :P
- Knowing how to stay positive. Yeah, you might be amazing with your vayne and you're 8/0... but if you're a jerk to your team they might end up throwing because their morale is being destroyed OR they waste time typing toxic things back at you and get themselves killed AKA throwing. I've seen people do this and it is sad.
- Knowing how to communicate and work together effectively. Once again, you might be 8/0 but if you don't ping, group, work with team to combo, work with team to contest objectives, you could very easily lose the game TLDR; You don't win a game of League just by having good mechanics with one champ in one role, it's so much more than that. TB let's you focus on those other more important things! :)
EDIT 3: If people queueing as one role for short wait time then instalocking another role becomes an actual problem, all Riot would have to do is have a vote report/kick feature. The player kicked wouldn't receive a time penalty to avoid duos kicking for fun. The team that kicked someone would re-queue to fill the role. Seems simple to me; if a Red wants to elaborate on whether this would work or not, they are definitely welcome.
EDIT 4(Important!):
"Fill" Role please, will fit into any role slot and displayed in champion select as "Assigned Role (Filled)." ex. Top Lane (Filled) Jungle (Filled) Mid Lane (Filled) AD Carry (Filled) Support (Filled) Or, even better, instead of selecting a role, you have boxes that you can check for each role, saying that you can play the role if checked, This would allow for how most people play (at least in my experience). ie calling something like "Mid/ADC" or "ADC/Sup" "Jungle/top" etc., while also accommodating people like me who call fill and play anything.
