how do you counter an aggresive olaf ?

falldown010··4 votes·5,812 views

everytime i go into lane, i get axes thrown at me, and they hurt once he gets lv 2 , he goes in with undertaker and with warlord's he can heal a lot while dealing a lot of damadge

so how do you counter the type of olafs who are good at throwing axes and pulling off their underaker/underthrow combo ?

yeah ik dodging is a thing, but im talking about the good likes , who are quite accurate

Whatever you do, don't engage a lvl 2 Olaf, create your distance.

He's a very strong lvl 2-3 fighter and if he kills you, he will snowball out of control and make your life miserable.

falldown0101 votes

yeah :^) tell me about it, met a couple main olafs, and well i almost left the game at one point since i was barely able to touch him , and he just bullied me out of the lane :(

I'm rank 5 as Olaf (warm hugs) so I can attest to some of his strengths, and weaknesses. Mana is an issue for him before he can buy item 3057 or item 3024 . Try your best to not get axed level 1 as he can chase you down, and deal allot of damage. I normally run either Thunderlords or Grasp depending on how much sustain I need in the lane vs raw damage. Baring cheesy vayne top picks, poke champs can do well, but again if you get axed your going to get some reallly cold hugs. Standing away from the creeps is a good idea so he has to choose if he wants to use the axe for poke or to push, and strain his mana pool.

His rank 1 E is very weak (100 or so dmg) so you can tell if he is maxing it, and some times i do if i want to fight high armor targets. Also note that he loses most of his resists when he is ulting so fighting back if your not losing horridly isn't a bad idea, just don't melee him.

Graves Darius Chogath Illaoi Yasuo can do well or go even.

Tryndamere Nasus Singed might feed early but outscale him.

Teemo Jayce Gnar Vladimir (haven't played the 6.95 vlad) are solid poke options, but spacing, and not getting axed is important.

If all else fails, who you going to call?

hm what are your thoughts on olaf using warlords and getting axes at lv 1 ? also would it be possible to play irelia vs him ? pre 6 i can see it going well, but after that , no clue x)

I don't think Irelia can beat Olaf without items unless he lets her stun him or is oom. After the buffs she seems very strong, but Olaf is still the best 1v1 in the game. Make him play into your jungler to avoid a bad fight.

He's a melee bully so if you're not a melee bully that is more focused on the mid/late game you're not going to have a great time. Also health counters Olaf better than armor which you would think is common sense but you'd be surprised.

falldown0102 votes

does it really ? so if i would get 1000-600 extra hp how much would it make a difference compare to going armor ?

Skelenth4 votes

You profit more from Health because he is dealing flat true damage with his E

falldown0101 votes

hm so kinda like irelia's w ?

Critmaster Garen2 votes

force him to push the minion wave and make him overextend. this is a generally good tip against agressive lane bullies.

if he tries to poke you down under your turret by throwing axes, hes just going to run out of mana.

just position in a spot where he has to hit your minions when hes throwing an axe at you. it will automatically make him push in.

falldown0101 votes

not gonna work , the thing is, olaf can throw axes , to force you to leave the tower, or stop you from stopping the wave, and he really excals at it once he has done this, and you attempt to clear the minnions he goes on you , and kills you most likely

SaltyKracka1 votes

Olaf's pretty bad at turret dives early, and throwing axes to try to poke you down under turret is just a waste of his mana.

It's really not that hard to freeze against him.

falldown0101 votes

well depends really on what champ you play though , i mean the thing is on how well he can handle the axe throw, a main would make staying under the turret kinda like a shooting practice , if they are really good at throwing atleast

SaltyKracka1 votes

Even if he hits you with every axe, it's still a waste of mana if he's not getting any follow up out of it.

You mentioned dodging skill shots. This is essential to laning against Olaf. If you do it right, you can lane as Vlad against him and win.

I recommend playing games against many skill shot oriented champs, preferably Xerath if possible. Learning to dodge skill shots will help so much that much of his mana will be wasted and his damage output/cc will be lowered a lot. Number one rule in general (you probably already know this, but just in case) is to dodge skill shots by moving perpendicular to the path of the skill shot. So when you're fighting Olaf in combat, it unfortunately means you have to be constantly weaving back and forth so that your movements are too unpredictable for him to hit you with his axe. It requires quite a lot of skill against good Olafs, and for me it is sometimes very frustrating for me to perform very well in lane, get kills, and still not be able to straight out fight an Olaf even when he is behind. At the same time, it's also very satisfying to see them deplete their mana as you manage to dodge virtually every single one of the axes.

Once you get slowed by his axe, it can be difficult to escape (unless you're close to tower of course). Depending on who you're playing, your way of harassing/csing will be different. Generally speaking, I'm afraid this is the most effective way of beating an Olaf.

If you can, continue laning against a very good Olaf to get used to dodging axes.

falldown0101 votes

well i used to play mid a lot, but got tired of it im fairly good at dodging, atleast vs champs i know :^)

like vs zed , but i guess i need more practice vs olaf

Play Braum top. Seriously though it is pretty derpy, you outrade lv 1 and 3-5. You can wall his damage, jump to minions to avoid dmg poke decently. When he ults just jump away until it ends. Kinda funny.

But yeah, most champs piss on him lv one, try to drive him off farm/ exp so he can't hit lv 2 as fast. Hide after 2 until you hit your power spikes. Most champs will be more useful him eventually.

falldown0101 votes

how viable is braum ? also any builds ?

Fondling Gems1 votes

Considering I had kill pressure as Braum into GP (to the point where their jgler (and then my jgler) started spending all their time top) Braum is definitely viable at low-mid elo.

I run 0-12-18 masteries with grasp of the undying.

Rush an iceborn and boots based on enemy team. Tabi, Merc, Swifty, and Lucidity are all viable options.

Vs AD top go into a dead man's plate. This gives you more map roaming and health for grasp.

Randuins or thornmail next if most of the enemies dmg is ad. Otherwise veil is a good option.

When trading with people get your grasp up from attacking minions then jump to whatever minion they are attack. Auto>Q. If they aren't going to burst you then aa 2 more times before backing off.

Early levels braum does a bunch of dmg and with his shield he can trade in minions very effectively since you will both be getting hit but you will take reduced damage.

Runes stack up on armour because w gives more stats based on your stats.

Max Q first. If you are going into a qquinnor something and getting poked hard max e 2nd, otherwise get w. In a 1v1 don't engage with your ult, save it for when one of you are trying to disengage. If they flash just ult then and walk right back in.

At a certain point Braum will start to be outscaled by a lot of champs, although his scaling among tanks is quite good thanks to w and e. At this point use deadmans to roam around and jump on other lanes.

Be warned that you can get some flame for playing braum top, especially if you fall behind.

Kledy McKledFace1 votes

play fiora and outheal him or even shen max q then w immediatly

and rush zzrot portal and watch him lose lane to minions :D if he gets tanky he cannot handle the push and if he gets dmg well you trade him easy

Spicy Rice1 votes

And if he builds both, you are fucked

falldown0101 votes

^ true , i learned it the hard way, and he destroyed me , at one point, i just went tanky, so i would be able to engage, and make some plays for my team

lilpokfluf1 votes

Any top lane champ that relys on stuns/ taunts for effective trading needs to do it before level 6. After this point it is better to play passive and focus on getting to your power spikes by csing as effectively as possible if he has no ult he is very easily bullied out of lane. The best thing you can do is pick a safe laner as he pretty does the same thing renekton does to anyone dumb enough to get close enough. Late game he falls off as he usually builds tanky and doesn't have late game damage scaling and isn't a real tank

falldown0101 votes

hm would irelia work, also got any tips on when he ults like what to do ?

i tend to run away, but once i get hit by the axes, i know im most likely dead :p atleast if the wave died and there are no minnions

the best way to fight a level 2 olaf is absolutely not to... even shyvana who has very strong level1-3 all-in potential loses horribly to olaf hell, i've once seen a level2 olaf 1v3 level2 gragas/udyr/jarvan and come out alive he's probably one of the strongest all-in fighters in the early game unless you're a ranged chapion who can easily kite him (vayne/graves/lulu/karma etc.) (which is again, the principle of not actually fighting him since he can't get his damage off if he's being kited)

Fondling Gems1 votes

I challenge your level 2 olaf to my level 2 Naut. Bring it on bruh.

Captain Aishi1 votes

last time I played that matchup as olaf, I got first blood at level 2... pretty self explanatory :P

Fondling Gems1 votes

Huh, I don't see that happening without Nautilus fucking up. Naut can kite the shit out if olaf with e and the free stun peels you off even if you do get close.

You never fight Olaf at level 1-2

Doesn't matter who you are

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

Actually surprisingly darius can fight olaf lvl 1 but yea it's safer to not fight him early,

DorkunedAuras1 votes

darius in a full 1v1 can beat anyone at lvl 1. He 5 stacks his passive then just wins.

EcchiOtakuTM1 votes

ACTUALLY trundle can beat darius at all stages of the game.

Trundle is by far top duelist.

Even overbuffed darius could not beat trundle even at his prime.

DorkunedAuras3 votes

There are things that can duel a trundle. Previous rageblade, gunblade, tank Jax could beat a trundle, though it was a hell of a fight.

he is difficult to play in the transitional period of mid to late game

and he won't win lategame

When did you fight him if at all, and with what summoners/masteries? I feel like olaf puts trydna in the trashcan pre 6, unless he gets like 4 crits in a row or something godly.

Around999People1 votes

A few days ago actually. He got the first kill on me then I carried. Every time he throws his axe and uses his other abilities back off, even use your spin if you need to. Then when his abilities die down go back in on him with your slow and if he flashes e again or flash.

If he goes ham on you post lvl 6 easy kill if you can time your r

MunchCrunchLunch1 votes

hes strong in melee 1v1s early game. because of the lifesteal and his healing passive. he will get stupid lifesteal. hell i've seen olafs 100-0 people with next to no health visible.

Zoeeee1 votes

His base mana, and mana per 5 is on the low side. I wish he would get 20 or so mana back from picking up axes so you don't have to back after clearing 2 waves. I also forgot to mention voli can out bully him depending on the build.

The Whamboozler1 votes

As someone who plays a fair amount of Olaf, here's my two cents. I'm only silver trash tho, so take with a grain of salt.

Obviously, try to dodge axes, but a LOT of Olaf's early hurt comes from his E. True damage, baby! Release that if he took E at level 2 he has no sustain yet (barring lifesteal runes or something) and if he took W he has less damage. Champions who can skirmish and sustain can handle him, as can anyone who can kite him away from walking up to land his E. Olaf does not mind taking damage and minion aggro to slam you with E or Q, because he can heal it up off minions pretty easily. HOWEVER, he wants to walk in, trade and walk out.

I have NEVER been dunked on more harshly than the time I went top against a Xin Zhao. At level 2 he sat in minions last-hitting and dashed on me the MOMENT I came in range. Every... time. Because Xin's early damage is absurd and he outsustained me. I was forced to either be zoned from farm ENTIRELY, or die to him. It's Xin, so he snowballs like a mofo too. So if you're THAT determined to beat an Olaf, I'd suggest being a man.

But yeah, if he's maxing Q first, just learn to dodge it. And if he's maxing E, stay out of his reach. Without his ult, Olaf is pretty kiteable. Let him lane the axes though and pain is coming. Range or strong sustain are your best bets.
