Delete Lethality for S8?

So, I think lethality is one of those failed experiments of Riot's, where the only time when people enjoy the statistic is when it's weak enough that nobody wants to buy it. I get the point of it, to make assassins more viable, but all lethality does is make the game miserable when it's good. People die too quickly, meaning that the only course of action is to form a tank meta so people can stay alive long enough to enjoy the game.

Riot obviously didn't want armour penetration to be a thing because it falls off later while snowballing early, but lethality is infinitely more punishing. Yes it's weaker than armour pen in theory, but you also can get more of it more easily than you could flat armour penetration, thus mitigating this fact.

I think what needs to happen in S8 is the complete and utter removal of lethality/flat armour penetration as a purchase-able statistic, and just improve the kits of some assassins to perhaps include some way to provide temporary flat armour penetration. Give Kha'Zix some bonus flat armour penetration against isolated targets, let Rengar's leap attacks have armour pen built in that scales in rank with one of his skills, something like that. Conditional armour penetration to emphasise these champions' gameplay patterns, while providing counterplay against it (stay with an ally vs Kha'Zix, fight away from brush versus Rengar).

Also, don't include this in EVERY assassin's kit, just the ones that are focused on conditional burst. Zed for example shouldn't have free armour pen, since he's got lots of mobility and options to harass and farm safely.

I think that flat armour penetration/lethality is just one of those things that should go the way of dodge and spell vamp before it. Champions that can use it well will just abuse it, so it's better to just remove it entirely. We can still keep Duskblade, Ghostblade and Edge of Night since they all have interesting components to them besides the lethality - just remove the lethality and compensate with some extra AD or something.

tl;dr - Remove lethality and flat armour pen from items, include conditionally in kits for some bursty assassins to keep them viable but still offer counterplay.

I fully agree with this post, and I love that you threw in an idea ( though it will need tuning) to go with it. I agree that lethality is a bit out of hand. If you get even slightly ahead you become a monster that punishes the enemy way too much later on. I don't believe it should be something removed entirely but possibly something that is tuned down. Definitely not like what they did with thunderlords when the new masteries came out where they just buff everything. Its not just rengar and khazix that should have it build into their kits. Lethality isnt purely for assassins, though that was the main intention. ADC's also need some form of lethality or armor pen in their set to deal with tanks later on. Though this is also just a throw in.

If lethality is removed, then magic penetration needs to be removed as well to keep both AD and AP equal. However, if champions do not have any form of resistance penetration, then people can just stack armor and magic resist and win the game simply by being unkillable. Thus instead of getting rid of the tank meta, you actually encourage the tank meta, making removing lethality in the first place pointless.
