Help Playing Lux?

So, Lux is easily my favorite champion in League, on EVERY level, but the thing is... I'm actually garbage with her in actual games, and I don't know why, or what to do better. Anyone here who's a pro Lux main that can help me out? ;w;

  • item 3165 item 3285 item 3158 item 3089 item 3157 item 3135 ... some matchups you go defensive CDR first but deviate from this build and you are going to feel like you do a LOT less damage (and/or the CDR balance feels wrong)

  • In lane, watch how he's moving (try to predict where he will be and shoot at where he will be) and aim to land E + auto (procs Thunderlords). Your goal is to land as many E + auto (TLD) as possible... NOT to land as many Es as possible. If you cannot land E + auto because he's good, just sit back and conserve your mana and trade defensively ONLY. If you can only hit long-range Es in lane your mana will go OOM super fast and you are done in lane. Its only mana efficient if you land a COMBO.

  • ONCE or TWICE fire a Q at him. If it hits, good, follow up with your spells. If he manages to dodge it a few times because his footwork is good, STOP launching Q. It is going to drain your mana and it will be game over. Focus on E + autos (TLD) and if you can't land that because of positioning issues, just conserve mana for defensive trades.

  • If you are pushed up (try to avoid it in laning) you want to ward the side and HOLD your Q for a defensive manoeuvre if you get Ganked. Your Q is your main defensive tool so think about when you can afford to throw it.

  • Your E becomes mana efficient with 3 or more points, until then... (and I cannot emphasize this enough), its E + auto or Q (if it lands) + auto + E... otherwise, generally don't fire your E.

  • If you want to roam, roam BOT (don't bother with top) and only when you are pushed up and you know the enemy has not warded and the enemy laner doesn't see you leave. You want to move in on them from a good angle, and throw Q very very carefully. Q is always aimed at where they are going to be, not where they are currently standing.

In teamfights there are two approaches. You should be actively thinking whether you are going to do "1" or "2" in a given scenario and switch between the two approaches whenever you decide one will work better than the other.

  1. You stand at near max range and bombard the enemy in general with Es and Qs. Following up with R if a snare is landed. This is taking advantage of Lux's max range. its generally a good option if your team is ahead, its low risk low reward. Its hard to prioritise squishies this way but if your team is ahead, targeting matters less and you can be an artillery piece that closes out the game by laying down general damage on the frontline. Spam your W on your team mates if they are in combat range.

OR

  1. You hide somewhere and prepare to ambush or flank a KEY TARGET (someone squishy). Whereas with "1" everyone knows where you are (because you are standing out there blasting at their front line from max range), with "2" you want to keep the lid LOW and hidden. When the fight breaks out or when someone is distracted; you run out and go for the squishy to throw Q at them (or you patiently wait in your spot, anticipating someone will approach, you throw out Q from a hidden position). Once Q is landed, you follow up with E and R and delete a target from 100-0, immediately removing the main damage threat.

"2" is the general approach you want to take when either your team is BEHIND (you REALLY need to focus down key targets or else lose game) or if your team has strong hard engage played by good players so you can follow up and target easily (Malphite Leona Nautilus etc). With this approach you want to throw your Q very carefully and at much closer (riskier) range to ensure it lands. You may have to Flash for kills. Its a general "follow up" or "flank" tactic. Much higher risk but will win team fights if key targets go down.

In team fights, generally FORGET about your auto procs (its a different game from laning) because in general its too risky to proc it. Proc if safe but generally its okay to just land E, Q, and R.

You do NOT have to win lane with Lux even though sometimes you can. Her mid and late game scales very VERY well and she has guaranteed utility and damage in pretty much all games.

  • summoner 14 on Lux is rarely a good idea (unless the other laner has no kill pressure on you but that's almost never the case). One of Lux's biggest advantages is the incredible range she has. You can obliterate people from so far away that you should never get in Ignite range (especially not late game!) Personally, I take summoner 21 because it makes Lux even safer than she already is.

  • When you are being chased and you're trying to escape, throw down your E and do not pop it right away. It has a 45% slow attached to it (on level 5) and I have lost track of all the times where I managed to get away because of the slow. Pop it right when the person chasing you is about to leave its area of effect so that you both get the slow + damage out of it.

  • Always start with E (unless you are invading where you would want to start with Q instead) and max E first (this one should be clear though)

  • **Never ever ever ever **take Deathfire Touch. You lose so much pressure in lane it's insane. Always go for Thunderlord's Decree.

  • On your first back 90% of the time you should get item 3802 because it solves your mana problems. Don't build item 3285 first! Your E has a 130 mana cost when maxed and without a mana item you will have to back so often because most other mid laners will simply outpush you.

  • Learn and use the Q > AA > E + E2 > AA Combo. It pops thunderlords once and your passive twice.

  • You are super vulnerable to ganks so never push too hard unless you have both sides of the river warded.

  • Mid/Late game, use your E to scout bushes. It grants vision. Do not face check bushes.

  • Use your Q to fish. If you catch the opposing laner (and they have no Magic resist) you'll probably 100-0 them with your full combo. Fishing with your Q is way more important after laning phase though. If you catch someone with your Q your whole team can jump on them and probably blow them up.

  • While sieging use your E repeatedly on their squishy carries (not on their tanks). Once you've gotten a squishy to around 30-40% of their health and your passive mark is on them you can try to snipe them with your Ult which will refund part of the ultimate's cooldown and remove one of their carries which in turn will allow you to push.

  • You seem to die a lot and I used to be like that too. I had to understand that as Lux I have no dashes or other escape tools other than summoner 4 (which is on a 5 minutes cooldown) so it's important to not go anywhere alone and stick with your team. If you are dying to ganks too much, don't push, ward (buy item 2055 ) and stay back.

  • If you are up against an AD assassin, rush item 3191 and (eventually) item 3157 (especially against Zed!). Play safe. Assassins counter Lux.

I saw you played Lux in the support role. I do it too from time to time. A few tips on Support Lux:

  • Don't itemize the same way as the usual support. You picked Lux because she basically becomes another APC late game and not because you needed a shielding bot. I would go for something like: item 2301 item 3020 item 3165 item 3285 item 3089 item 3135 which is basically her Mid Lane build minus item 3157 . Depending on the situation you can swap one or two of the damage items for item 3107, item 3174 or item 3504 . I haven't tried item 3190 but its low activation range puts you into a very dangerous position and most of the time you will be focused too. If you can manage to stay behind your front line it might be worth picking up. Almost always you'll want to get item 3098 very soon because it raises the Gold you get from damaging enemies and grants Mana regeneration.

  • Remember that you have a shield and you can hit your ADC twice with it. Position yourself accordingly.

  • Always ward the ganking paths (especially when the two of you decide to push up to their tower) because once you are ganked there is little you can do to prevent your or your ADC's death (since your Q has a very high cooldown)

Play safe in lane you can e or q for poking the laner and procing your passive with aa in between but don't overextend, because your vulnerable to ganks.

DANCE a lot and emote her mouth off. Laugh as much as you can. Thats how you win with LUX

Sexy Jack Rabbit4/10/2017, 10:25:35 AM1 votes

Fun little tips. Do not solely farm with abilities, you will run OOM incredibly fast. One E followed up by Auto-attacks should be enough to clear a wave. Her wave clear is not the best, in fact it's quite bad without ludens.

Always take Thunderlords. Your strongest combo in lane is AA the enemy, and as that AA travels, throw and proc your E for an instant Thunderlords proc. If you cannot proc your passive, typically it's pointless to throw your E unless you're securing. The base damage is garbage, and shockingly not amazing for poke. It's the AA + Passive that is good for poke.

Farming is a necessity, Lux likes Expensive things. Focus on improving your CS.

Lastly fishing with Q is your biggest asset. Majority of the time, you should not E + Q in hopes of increasing your chances of hitting Q, you just end up wasting 200-ish mana if you mess it up. Fish with your Q and then + E + R + E2 + Ignite + AA = TLD.

SteelMankind4/10/2017, 2:07:03 PM1 votes

Poke with E whenever its off CD. You should be able to land it everytime too, since the AOE and range are huge. If you can, auto for the passive+TLD proc, but make sure you don't get punished for it.

Hold off on putting points in W until level 7. Your full combo+one auto will oneshot most champions at 6.

Don't go for random ults on people who aren't CC'd, unless you think the ult damage will kill them from their current health (like sniping a recalling low health ADC, for instance). Most of the time, you'll be comboing people with Q+E+ult, so try to be fishing for Q's on squishies. Be ready to E+ult immediately if the Q lands.

Delay Rabadons. Lux has mediocre AP ratios but pretty great base damage, so you should be getting items like Void Staff, Haunting Guise, and Ludens first. She also has huge range. You can afford to build her full glass cannon, so avoid items like Zhonyas or Abyssal unless they're absolutely neccessary. A lot of Lux players get Mejais because of how easy it is to stack on her and not die.

She's probably the best midlaner for stealing Dragon or Baron, as a quick E+ult is more damage than Smite at nearly every point in the game, and can be done from relative safety. Go for it - even if you don't get the objective, you might snag a kill from the AOE.

not a pro but E>Q>E pop> ult seems a pretty good combo. max e first and enjoy the lightshow.

Limeheart XI4/10/2017, 4:47:28 PM1 votes

hi, was good with her for a while... these are the builds i use (btw, i use 20% scaling cdr in runes so they are all 45% cdr) (quints are movespeed) movespeed supp (my fav)item 3504 item 3069 item 3742 item 3117 item 3285 item 3100 most unbelievable clickbait (when you know your team got your back) item 3165 item 3003 item 3089 item 3027 item 3285 item 3135 and then random mix of item 3157 item 3152 item 3100 item 3504 into the second build (while making sure to balance out the cdr) depending on their team comp (usually discard item 3027 for the extra slot) (i sell boots for the last item) (almost always build protobelt into riven...can bait her into doing her flash q w delete yo ass to china combo into thin air) (have atleast one item with item 3113 if you are gonna sell boots late game) (and you can pop e mid ult cast now i think...makes stealing barons and draqs easier) (lichbane needs other ap items to be good...don;t build it first unless you are pretty confident) (also if you play supp vs a draven, back off immediately if you miss your q...he will fuck you up)

just looking over your stats, it looks like in general you die a lot and don't cs enough. i would suggest working on those two things instead of worrying about one champ.

A couple things about Lux, though...all of her abilities are skill shots (the E is forgiving ofc, since it's an AoE), so that might be an issue for you too. And she's squishy and not very mobile.

Thanks, everyone! I think I learned a good amount from reading all the comments. Uh, if any of you wanna see my garbage Lux in action, feel free to add me, too! Goes out to test all this new knowledge
