Some people are trying to make something out of league, so this is getting ridiculous

Ultra da boy··159 votes·14,247 views

tl;dr: There's too much risk and BS in this game for people to actually try and pursue this game seriously.

Hi, I'm Ultra. I've played for a little over 3 1/2 years. Over this past year, I was actually accepted into Robert Morris University in Chicago, and I received the League of Legends scholarship to play on one of their teams.

Now, I understand the premise of playing for fun, trying to enjoy the game and relaxing while playing, I understand that. But with my understanding, I also expect equal reciprocation of respect for the people that take the game a lot more seriously than others do. This isn't just a joke anymore. People LIVE off this game, and it is a very real job, and a very real thing in the present times.

With being accepted into the college, I also received one of the scholarships for playing on the team. I am currently Platinum 3.

But there's the thing, Platinum 3.

Climbing is hard man, and not in the good way. And you can say it's because I'm bad, and you can tell me I need to work on my mechanics and not pay attention to my teammates, but what do I do when that's not enough?

I try, man. I really, really try. All I want to do is win, and get better, and prosper. That's all I'm trying to do. But how am I supposed to climb if no one gives a shit? And why do I have to get punished with people that don't give a shit. I've had countless AFKs, countless feeders, COUNTLESS people that just _DO. NOT. CARE. _

And that's not fair, man.

Now people are saying, oh well they're just your feelings, right? No, this isn't just my feelings.

I can forward my scholarship amount greatly, just by breaking diamond, but I can't do that on my own. When I can only, at most, influence a game by 20%, while the other 80% runs rampant, there's only so much I can do. If you want to put it in a literal point of view, every day, 80% of the people i play with are the deciding factors of how much money my family has to pay for me to go to college, and where I end up. That's a pathetic argument though, it's cheap, and I'm not going to legitimately ever say that. It's not fair for me to say that.

I'm trying riot. And this isn't a demand, this isn't a rage post, this is me, pleading with you. Please do something about Solo Queue.

There's a problem when getting into my promos causes my stomach to literally knot up, and make me feel sick, just because I know how great the chance is that I'm going to be paired with people who couldn't care less if I jumped off a bridge and died, let alone people who want to win this Solo Q game, and I'm just going to have to start from square 1 all over again. All my work and stress, for absolutely nothing.

Please Riot, something has to be done about the match making system. I believe in your company. I really do. You have the most played game in the WORLD. THE WORLD. That's incredible. How many of you thought you were going to be working for THE most played game of our lifetime? No one could have predicted that.

But you have the tools to fix this. I'm watching players drop left and right from this game, just because of how much they can't stand playing ranked. Sooner or later, if this problem isn't addressed, you're going to find yourselves in a deep pit.

Now, I'm all for eSports. I mean, that's technically the drive behind why i would even write this post. I love it. But Riot seriously needs to at least try to focus some of that eSports energy towards Solo Queue, and the game's ranking system. There's a seriously problem within it and until that problem is addressed, this game will continue to lose players, and revenue.

** I want to be a pro.** From the moment I saw Str8 Rippin win the 2008 MLG Championships for Halo 3, I knew right then I wanted to be a pro gamer. And I know I can do it, too. I have the drive and the passion and I have striven for nothing more than to be on that main stage for almost 7 years now. I don't have much else. I'm not tall or muscular, I can't jump high, I'm not even that great at school. But I am great at games, especially this one, and I know I am, and I know I can make it.

The only problem is, every day when I try to further myself and achieve that goal, I'm only responsible for 20% of it. 40% if I support, maybe. Even then, might as well be a 0% chance. And that beats down on players every day. Knowing whether or not they try their best, whether or not they care, whether or not they're polite to people, it's going to get thrown right back in their face by some (excuse my language) fucking jagoff who is only worried about his own agenda, and ruining yours.

And that's toxic.

The amount of ranked games I have lost because of an AFK for someone who intentionally throws the game, etc, is so high its stupid.

I would say near 40% of lost ranked games are due to someone going afk. Sometimes, the game is like:

Your team is crushing them, really hard.

1-2 people AFK. Enemy team gets the upperhand and slaughters you.

The chances of this stuff happens almost doubles once you get into promos.

Its not the fear of not winning. Its the fear of being cheated out of a win.

I love how you wrote that

"It's not the fear of not winning, It's the fear of being cheated out of a win." this so perfectly describes how solo queue is.

I'll play absolutely perfectly and hard carry my team, but because ONE person on my team doesn't care and just feeds all game it negatively impacts me so hard. I feel like I've been cheated out of so many wins that solo queue is more-so just rolling a dice to see if your team is going to feed all game or be half decent. Currently I'm Silver, but to be honest, from spectating and playing face-to-face with Silver players, it feels like I have to single handedly carry all of my games, or just lose them all and it feels like playing in low elo is much harder than playing in higher elo, because if I don't get fed, then the game is immediately over with the enemy Katarina some how going 20-0 within the first 10 minutes of the game and everyone on my team saying "gg kat op" or blaming each other, or just simply not caring at all.

I don't like how feeders or people who don't care negatively effect me, I don't like how AFK'ers negatively effect me, and I don't like how trolls negatively effect me. I can go 10-0 and literally 1v3 and get a triple at 4 minutes into the game (this has actually happened) but because my team does nothing but feed, rage at each other, and mess around, I still lose and despite me playing very well for the most part, it doesn't matter at all because at the end of the day wins dictate much more than your performance.

This is so true. I played a ranked game today where we were getting beat pretty good. Then one of them AFKs out of the blue. The struggle turned around and we pushed to win in not much more time. In an evenly matched game, just 1 person AFK or not playing seriously can throw the entire game.

So, don't laugh, but I came here from competitive Super Smash Bros. I can tell you that one of the big differences between the Smash community and the League community is that the Smash community has a much better "can-do" attitude. Everyone makes an attempt at recovering, no matter how futile, and there's a lot less whining about "OP" characters and tactics. This has made it pretty difficult for me to adjust to League of Legends, especially as a person who believes very strongly in not giving up, and finds it frustrating when a teammate says "GG" when we're six kills down.

The thing is that in Super Smash Bros, it's all you. If you lose your match, it's on you, and if you win, it's on you. Even if the matchup was bad, that's on you for your character choice. You don't have anyone or anything else to blame, and if you have the passion, you have the potential. In fact, there's slang for it: No Johns. It means no excuses.

In League, that doesn't happen. You can lose a game through no fault of your own, not because your top lane did poorly and you couldn't carry hard enough – that's the enemy team outplaying yours – but because someone afked, trolled, fed intentionally. That's not the enemy team outplaying yours, that's just you getting screwed over by someone who has, by selecting Ranked Play, agreed to actually try to win.

The problem is not that this holds you back, because you can climb through that. You can learn to carry games even when 80% of your team has the potential to totally suck. The problem is that this holds you back on terms you have not agreed to. The enemy team could have a feeder just as much as yours, but it still ruins the game because this isn't outplay, it's just getting lucky.

This post isn't "Riot, fix solo queue so I can climb the ranks like I deserve." This post is "Riot, fix solo queue so that it doesn't suck to play." Think of it like a huge bug fix, where the bugs are toxic players. It affects everyone, and it always sucks.

This is one of the better responses I've seen on this thread. I didn't address it in the post I made (wanted to focus on scholarship issues rather than solo que), but if we are just talking solo que and not scholarships, then this is probably the only reasoning that has ever convinced me a legitimate revamp would be useful.

My undergrad was in psych (after switching from econ because I wanted something that interested me more), and my masters was in educational psych (research on how people learn, I specifically focused on addiction and recovery patterns and treatment modalities). One thing I can speak to with a modicum of authority is that human learning is significantly impacted by environment and emotional state. You could probably argue (and maybe even back it up with research if you did it) that the ability of players to improve at league and actually get better is harmed by the negative experience of some ranked games. People are risk averse so the negative games stick out more (avoiding bad things is more important to survival than finding good things because you can be mediocre and still be alive). This leads to people being frustrated in games even where there isn't an issue on their teams some times because they have an overall view of ranked as a bad experience. When people are emotionally engaged in a subject it is easier to persist in learning despite adversity because the enjoyment makes you want to stick with it and overcome difficulty. Therefore, if ranked becomes an overall bad experience for someone, their ability to focus on improving at the game will actually be reduced whether or not they intend to take a different approach (ie be less serious about it) to the game.

I had thought of the issue of disengaging in negative games, but the issue of generalizing bad experiences hadn't really occurred to me in quite as articulate a manner as you put it forward. Essentially in Smash you can always try to get better and improve because you feel that you have a way out, a means to winning if you can just find the solution/skill. However, the negative experience in ranked can sometimes not be avoided, and if people don't take steps to counteract the possibility of generalization, then that experience can create symptoms of learned helplessness (the research on that is depressing, I'd suggest not looking it up) where people stop trying to find a way out even when there is one because they feel trapped.

I think what you say is the only real reason (that I've seen so far at least) to complain about ranked, as everything else is explained away by "it happens on their team as much as yours":

I agree i believe Solo que is asinine i'm tired of trolls and feeders

Joquan6 votes

Trolls and feeders are frequently less common than people think.

JAGMAG1 votes

depends what you mean by a troll

for example we had a daruis jungle that's pretty troll to start but then the other team gets baron so he decides to clear red side raptors...of course he gets caught stands there and dies to me that's trolling

another example is the same game jinx decides hey they have baron and are taking an inhib great time for me to get the t1 bot tower so she just split pushes letting them take our tower inhib and then nexus so she could get the t1 bot...i also consider that trolling

stuff like that happens almost every game if your ahead dose not matter to much if your behind its pretty much gg

Joquan4 votes

that's not trolling, that's one of the downside to being in low elo: your teammates are very, very, dumb. Theres nothing you can do to fix that except duo Q or being better than your enemies.

ElJanitorFrank17 votes

Here's the thing, though: 80% of those games will have a 50% win/loss rate.

By the way, this whole 20%//80% ONLY APPLIES IF YOU ARE WHERE YOU NEED TO BE.

If you belong higher, you'll climb faster, you'll be influencing 30%, 40% of your games.

If you play 50 games without climbing, it doesn't mean you are being matched with feeders, trolls, etc. it means you need to improve. Statistically, you would have climbed a division higher in much fewer than 50 games if you deserve to.

There is no real reason to complain; you'll never break enough barriers and get it through to the idiots who are ruining your experience. Of course you'll get people who don't take it super seriously, but what else can you expect from a game like league of legends? The game is competitive by nature, but not everyone takes competition seriously in games.

If you want to improve in this game, grinding ladder might not be the best way to do so, honestly, and it's for the very reason you're complaining. Focus entirely on you, record your games and every time you die, look at why you died. You'll find out what your weaknesses are much more quickly, and focus on them.

If you can improve enough as a player, then the % of games you have control over are is going to rise, and that's the important part.

The game is a PvP game, I'm not expecting to win 60%+ of my games. Hitting a promo series and knowing that the game expects me to win 60%+ of my games is just ridiculous.

Series really need to go.

Also team builder needs to take over ranked. It's the only way to really let people shine in their best roles. When I play in a ranked game and I can't be adc or support, I know right there I'm in over my head. My skills in top and mid just don't hold up... Yet the best way to excel is to focus on a single role, and sometimes even a single champ, and just master it.

You see this if you look at the top players and teams. You have to become a master at what you're doing. Every game on a team everyone has the same role. If they all had to switch roles you're damn right they wouldn't be as great. They even have their familiar champion pools they dip into. Broadening this champ pool is important, but we're talking 5-7 champs all in a single role, not 20+ champs across any role at any given time.

TeamBuilder for Ranked needs to have people queue up for their role, select maybe 6 champs as their pool going into that game, and have the banning come out of that pool only. Reduce bans down to 2 per team again since we don't have as many champions to worry about, and everyone can pick out of their pool after the ban phase for their champs.

It lets the team have a chance to dodge people who won't cooperate, or overlap for roles, and ensure a solid team before finalizing the queue. It also lets people have a reasonable expectation when someone calls a role of what they're going to bring to that lane.

What's wrong with your post:

Over this past year, I was actually accepted into Robert Morris University in Chicago, and I received the League of Legends scholarship to play on one of their teams.

I've never heard of Robert Morris University. Now nothing would be wrong with going to a school I've never heard of, other than its named after a person, so I'm assuming its private. That means your going to be paying probably $30,000+ a year to a school that isn't all that great. Save your money for grad school.

While everyone should be treated respectfully, all sorts of people have to deal with all sorts of shit in their jobs. Why should I go out of my way to treat Pro League Players like royalty?

Climbing is hard man, and not in the good way. And you can say it's because I'm bad, and you can tell me I need to work on my mechanics and not pay attention to my teammates, but what do I do when that's not enough?

You get good enough to climb.

I try, man. I really, really try. All I want to do is win, and get better, and prosper.

That's great. Now if the enemy team stopped trying , wanted to lose, get worse, and fail the world would be a perfect place. Oh wait, they want the same things you do. You know how you get what you want? By being better than they are.

That's all I'm trying to do. But how am I supposed to climb if no one gives a shit?

By being good enough to become a major influence on your team. IE, carrying.

And why do I have to get punished with people that don't give a shit. I've had countless AFKs, countless feeders, COUNTLESS people that just _DO. NOT. CARE. _

Every League Player gets countless shitty ass players. It's not just you. Plus, you can show mathematically that you do not get more afks than the enemy team. Now there is a 8 in a million chance that you get more afks over 100 games, but I sincerely doubt you are one of those people.

And that's not fair, man.

Life's not fair, man.

I can forward my scholarship amount greatly, just by breaking diamond, but I can't do that on my own. When I can only, at most, influence a game by 20%, while the other 80% runs rampant, there's only so much I can do.

LoL is a team game. Other people will directly effect how well you do. Now there are some issues with solo queue in a team game, but those aren't easily solved.

If you want to put it in a literal point of view, every day, 80% of the people i play with are the deciding factors of how much money my family has to pay for me to go to college, and where I end up.

There is just so much wrong with this that I literally want to punch you in the face. So I am going to keep it short: YOU DECIDE WHERE YOU GO TO COLLEGE AND WHAT YOU PAY. NOT ALL THE DUMBSHITS YOU PLAY WITH. MAN UP AND TAKE SOME FUCKING RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOURSELF. LEBRON FUCKING JAMES DOESN'T COMPLAIN THAT HE LOSES OUT ON MONEY BECAUSE HIS TEAM IS BAD, BECAUSE IT'S NOT ABOUT HIM, IT'S ABOUT HIS FUCKING TEAM. THAT THE NATURE OF A TEAM GAME. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE TERMS OF YOUR SCHOLARSHIP, THEN DON'T FUCKING TAKE IT.

That's a pathetic argument though, it's cheap, and I'm not going to legitimately ever say that. It's not fair for me to say that.

Any team sports player isn't judged solely on their performance, but rather how they preform as part of a team. Why should you be any different?

There's a problem when getting into my promos causes my stomach to literally knot up, and make me feel sick, just because I know how great the chance is that I'm going to be paired with people who couldn't care less if I jumped off a bridge and died, let alone people who want to win this Solo Q game, and I'm just going to have to start from square 1 all over again. Like what? What do you want Riot to do about DCs, trolls, etc? My guess is it won't be reasonable.

I seriously doubt you have the capability of being a professional gamer. Your attitude is all wrong.

The only problem is, every day when I try to further myself and achieve that goal, I'm only responsible for 20% of it. 40% if I support, maybe. Even then, might as well be a 0% chance. Normally, I'd agree with you. However, you said that you want to be a professional gamer. So no. You are not 20% responsible for you team's outcome. You're not 10% responsible for who wins or loses. You said you want to get better, you said you want to become a pro, SO YOU ARE 100 FUCKING PERCENT RESPONSIBLE FOR WINNING. It doesn't matter if your allies pick a troll comp, fed intentionally, and afked leaving you in a 1 v 5, YOU ARE 100% RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OUTCOME OF THE GAME SO IT'S YOUR FAULT YOU LOST.

Edit:

I want to clarify that my problem isn't with the points you brought up as some of them are legitimate and should be addressed, such as the purpose of Solo Queue in a team game, what should be done with trolls/dc, how the climbing experience is.

My major problem is that your attitude. You act like an entitled brat and I can't stand that. You seem to think that people shouldn't troll because it affects YOU negatively. That's a bullshit attitude that you need to change.

You can't compare solo queue to professional teams whether esports or basketball, lebron james as you said probably would not be accepting to a team of pickups from the street that had one guy who kept soiling himself, another that throws the ball to the other team and another who just walks off the court because that is what solo queue is, actually I'm willing to bet if that's what it took to be a top player in the NBA most of the current top players would work at home depot.

The solutions is **swifter, harsher punishments **. People need to be seriously afraid of breaking the rules. Actions HAVE to have consequences. Someone repeatedly ragequits? Banned for a month. Get's reported repeatedly for harassment/negative attitude? Banned for a month. etc etc etc. Anybody that repeatedly breaks The Summoner's Code, deserves punishment. That is the only thing that will alleviate this widespread problem. Unless the majority of people suddenly start whole-heartedly believing that being nice/friendly/helpful/A DECENT HUMAN BEING is COOL, we're going to have to dish out harsh punishments. If Riot is swamped with reports to process, put people like me with clean records on The Tribunal who passionately want to help make this community healthier for all those who dare venture into it!

Pykey McStabbs2 votes

the problem with that is that riot is also a business. month bans result in people quitting or making smurfs. both of those are terrible for business. people who quit dont buy RP for skins and champs. and people that smurf can have serious negative influences on true new players, resulting in the new players never even making it to level 30 let alone putting money into the game.

i agree with the op that ranked can be a cesspool of frustration (partly why i hardly play any ranked at all) but overly harsh punishments hurt the bottom line.

You can quit smoking and live a healthy life, or merely cut back or vape and only lose half of the lifespan you would have lost smoking straight carcinogens.

I've watched people intentionally throw games in normals and then act stupid or try to blame it on me afterward, and the precise thing that the OP is posting about even before promos showing up is the reason I don't play solo queue in either LoL or DOTA2.

It's not fun, it's too stressful to deal with. It's bad enough players on my team will go way out of their way to prove they shouldn't be at the MMR I'm at. They don't need to troll or rage or AFK on top of it. Matchmaking has taken a dive at determining close match quality lately, but purging, naming and shaming their players will go much faster toward getting their competitive and non-competitive players to overlook that. They will have hard evidence they did something without tossing numbers up, browsable enforcement logs of banned players for public consumption as examples, and reduce players having to resort to third-party methods to determine whether or not someone will cooperate before deciding to dodge.

Why are you so concered about your college League team and yet you talk about Solo-que?

Are you not playing for their team or something? Do you have to prove yourself first? You were already accepted onto the team when you were in Plat, and that's enough to tell you that the college team thinks highly of your performance.

I don't get why you're raging though: if you're playing with a bunch of other good people, they must surely know that Solo-que is a shitstain and isn't really a good measure of skill. But I guess I can see that you're concerned for others and their opinions of the game.

Unfortunately, the % of League players who want to be in the pro scene are a vast minority. Millions of people play this game. How many are pros, maybe like a hundred? Two hundred? That's not counting the high-level players who aren't on a pro team.

I'm also quite convinced that Riot won't really do anything drastic until they see a VAST drop in players.

Also, hes not "Raging".

Raging is blindly throwing out complaints, excuses, and slander for no reason other than your own angst. If you consider this well structured post that... well, based on the lack of reading comprehension, not suprising.

Also, riot has already released information on solo queue changes coming soon, so... whats your point?.

Congrats on the scholarship, but your thinking is very flawed here. You say that the main reason that you aren't climbing to diamond is that your teammates hold you back (correct me if I am wrong). However, you also say that you know you can become a pro. There is obviously a large skill difference between you and the average lcs player because, well, no lcs player is in plat - they are all (or could all be) high diamond at worst. This implies that your teammates are holding you back an entire league's worth, from plat to diamond. This just doesn't make sense.

Just as a reminder - each game, you play with 9 random other people - 4 on your team, 5 on the other. There is a higher chance that the feeder/afk/whatever is on the other team than on your team.

This guy is speaking the straight truth. There was a reddit post a while back criticizing RMU about giving away scholarships for LoL players to get people to come to their university. Sounds good right? Except for the fact that their tuition is ridiculously high, and they aren't a very good school. It was even mentioned that there were players in silver + gold getting scholarships and in the LoL program.

I know you might not want to hear this, but I think you're valuing the scholarship a little too much here. If you really deserve to be in a higher division, you will get there. People on these boards complain endlessly about trolls/AFK. I hate them too, but you're bound to get them in a few games here and there. And don't pretend like it's every game, because it isn't. Please stop with the "I deserve to be in a higher division, but it's my teammates" because literally everyone says that, and it obviously isn't true.

Your second paragraph uses the standard tripe of "there are more players on the enemy team than yours, and thus there is more likelihood of them being bad". Each team has 5 players. If the standard response were true, every player would have a 60% win rate once they are in their proper division, which is patently false.

To all the people telling me I'm being a baby and I should deal with it and push forward, I am. I'm still going to stay positive and do my best and hope things can start looking my way more in Solo Q.

To all the people asking for a solution, I didn't find it valid I provide one since I wasn't making any demands and more along the lines of just a plea, and I was pretty baked when I wrote this, I still am, but I'm sure there's very simple alternatives that could be tested and possibly implemented. I just can't personally think of something like that at the moment.

But anyways, thanks everyone, feel free to keep replying, always enjoy the discussion

If the 20% you deliver each game are always higher quality gameplay then your current elo and the other 80% for your team and the other 100% for the enemy team equal gameplay quality around your current elo... your elo would increase over time... thats the whole point of the system and how it works

Also if there is a chance for every random to be a troll, feeder or afk your winrate should incease over time as they enemy team has a higher chance ( 5 players ) while your team has a lower chance ( 4 players )... (as you of course never troll, feed or go afk...)

So you see if you are

  1. never feeding, trolling or going afk
  2. play better then your current elo odds should be extremly high that with every game you climb ladder a bit.

Also if you win a lot of games and only lose the promos you should soon start to get promo after just one game, as after the last lost promo you would still get 30++ LP due to your super high elo... I personally increased my rank after to soft reset to gold 4 from gold 5 when it was still season 3-->4 because i had such a high elo compared to others in gold 5 before the reset...

Yeah, the basic gist of ELO in a 5v5 game with SoloQ that people seem to be forgetting needs to be repeated.

The argument can still be made that lessening the emotional strain of SoloQ and making it a better learning environment is a big deal, though. Flaming, AFKing and trolling distract from learning the rest of the game and pinpointing mistakes you make or teams make.

Exactly!

Riot says 13% or whatever games are lost due to negative players/toxic actions but that's not true. Regardless optimistic you are, and stuff, bad players are just gonna be bad.

I'd say that's a big fucking lie. Truth is 13% of the games are lost because it's random group, and not a premade with friends. That's one of the real reasons why people may lose 13% or more of their games. Also just do to people being bad in general even if you encourage them and stuff, they still suck.

In my opinion, Riot should matchmake you with people who are in a promotional series as well. Its so everyone takes it seriously and knows, "If we lose, we all suffer that loss on our promos." I failed my promos to B2 5 times, I stopped played ranked ever since I got to B2 as I was so afraid of dropping back down to B3. In really low elo, I have ranked anxiety.

So I'll probably get down voted for this, but I feel like I am passionate enough about this I need to respond. I get there are issues with solo que and I get that there is only so much you can do to increase your rank, and it has a very real impact on not just your emotional well being, but also on your livelihood (as your scholarship influences how much you can spend on things other than school). However, that is a choice you made (please hear me out and read the rest).

There are 3 things I will break down that I think are important influences on the argument you are making here 1) how other scholarships share similar issues that aren't necessarily ever going to be addressed, 2) issues withing game that are controllable to a degree and you may be overlooking (maybe not though) 3) how other players may be in similarly unfair situations. I'll address them in that order, because if I can't establish the first, there is no reason to even consider the other 2.

  1. Other scholarships have similar issues, and no one is going to solve the problem for those students. To some degree you accept any unfair conditions that hold you back within your scholarship by nature of accepting the scholarship. You can say I don't understand, but I can give you a first hand example from my own life. I was accepted to university on a full ride academic scholarship. I also struggle with mental health issues that I have dealt with since adolescence. I was able to not lose my scholarship even though I struggled in high school due to apathy and other issues related to my depression because my SAT scores were pretty good (missed one question on the math section), and I graduated on time passing all my classes except multi-variable calculus (college cal 3 most places) despite a 20% absence rate my senior year. However, my academic scholarship was conditional upon maintaining a 3.6 or something, and taking 15 credit hours a semester at minimum. I had accommodations for my learning disabilities (dyslexia and adhd, so difficulty reading and focusing, didn't finish part of the verbal on my SAT because I couldn't read fast enough and didn't have accommodations due to not filling out the proper forms), but not for depression. It's pretty difficult to meet strict attendance policies when some days you struggle to get out of bed, and my psychologist and others had recommended I not take more than 12 hours a semester because it would be difficult for me. The deck is stacked against someone in that situation, but not paying tuition, a stipend for books and food, and 100 of rent each month on campus is hard to turn down, so I had to adjust if I wanted the money. It might not be fair, but it was part of the contract I signed in exchange for the money and I knew it going in. No one was going to change it, and it's that way for others. Traditional sports players often face the same issues. Sometimes their scholarships are conditional on them being able to play, and if they are physically injured and no longer able to, then they lose their scholarship. TLDR; most scholarships have conditions that may be unfair, it's the school's right to do this. In agreeing to the terms of the scholarship you sometimes just have to overcome the unfair nature in order to keep the money.

  2. You can certainly have more than a 20% influence in the game. If we dropped you (a plat 3 player) into a bronze level game, you would have more influence than your teammates because the skill difference would be so wide. I'm not saying it's your fault, but there are ways to increase your skill difference. For instance duo que with a strong player and you will bring their MMR down and they may have enough influence to help you climb. Additionally, later in the season you have more people who are in division 5 of a tier and have relaxed and stopped playing as seriously because they can drop to division 2 or 3 of the tier below their current one and not lose their tier. It's not fair, but you may have an easier time getting diamond early in the season rather than now, because more people are climbing.

  3. Any student at a school other than yours (not sure if anywhere other than robert morris offers lol scholarships) who is your level or higher, has an equal or greater complaint that for them the money isn't even available. Not sure if RM is a state school or private, but if there is out of state tuition, some students may not be able to attend due to that, and if it is private, need based financial aid may be a factor for some students not being able to afford it. Additionally, some students may have families that require them to go to particular schools. All these are factors that may make a diamond player ineligible for the money you are making from the same game they are playing. While it may be unpleasant, I think it would be difficult to argue that someone who cannot make money from the same activity should be required to take the game as serious as you do. It is unfortunate, but at the same time it is part of reality. It's an obstacle, that if removed, would shift skill representation (because you would have a different environment) and thus might justify the school shifting the requirements of your scholarship. Just the way the school I attended might have stricter requirements for my scholarship if they had been forced to give me different treatment due to my issues (it would make less sense to them to offer it to me because I would be less prestigious for them and wouldn't count toward their 4 year graduation rate, so they would expect more from my entering stats to off set that).

I hope this doesn't come across as antagonistic, but I wanted to point out that your scholarship is not the only one with these issues. Also there are considerations to be made that if the issue was dealt with from riot's side, it might shift your school's approach to the matter as well.

If I can put this in a positive light, this thread is filled with an absolutely disgusting amount of excuses.

To put it bluntly - as bullshit as promos/shitty randoms are - pros dealt with it. Thousands of players in diamond dealt with it.

A lot of these comments are feeding themselves off half truths. Yes, it's hard to carry shitty teammates. Yes, matchmaking is not flawless. Yes, solo queue isn't an accurate representation of League skill because League is a team game. Yes, a single troll capable of holding the game hostage is evidence of that.

But it is an accurate representation of personal skill. Your ability to turn around and control games on your own, regardless of adversity. Play in bronze, and your personal skill could probably 1 v 5. **There is an even bigger chasm between plat and pro. **

400 games is not a case of "bad teammates" or "bad luck". Give me 400 games, I reached diamond in 170. Cowsep, Trick2G, etc. could do it in a fraction of that. Riot could personally murder every toxic player in solo queue and I'd be surprised if the difference brought you to diamond.

The fact that you main bot lane yet grow frustrated with your teammates is ironic. Support and ADC are reliant on the performance of the other, especially support. One of your most played supports is Janna, who is notorious because she helps the adc hard carry/never die. If your adc is shit, suddenly Janna is no where near as influential.

My advice is main adc more. Main it as hard as possible. Avoid frequently playing supports, fights need damage to be won and you clearly can't always rely on your team to deal it. If you can't get ADC, get jungle or mid. Both roles have huge lane and objective influence through their roam capability. Make it your goal to always lead your team in gold earned, wards placed, and damage dealt to champs.

The failures are your own, but that's better than blaming the system or your team because you can fix your failures.

I would expect that someone who goes to university and is plat+ would know how probability and randomness works...Yes, the outcome of one match is mainly dependant on your team and their team. The randomness of a single game is HUGE. A pro player smurfing in silver can still lose. However, his chance of winning will be (a lot) higher than 50%. And that's enough to climb. Maybe, he'll lose his first 5 matches. Does that mean he's bad? No, 5 matches is a ridiculously small sample. If he plays 500 matches, however, he's probably got a winrate of 55% and climbing steadily.

I don't know what you're studying, but if you are doing anything that has to do with science or statistics, you should know that the bigger your sample size is, the smaller the chance that something is caused by "randomness" will be. If I have a medicine that has a 60% chance of curing someone that otherwise has a 50% of getting better, but the first 8 patients don't get better, it doesn't mean that the medicine doesn't work. If, however, over the course of 1000 patients only 48% of them get cured, you should question the medicine as the 60% chance of curing probably isn't true OR the people you've been using it on are different from the ones previously tested on.

Similarly with soloQ, it's not because you can't climb during the first 50 games that you necessarily deserve to be there. However, if you can't climb during 500 games, the chances (note that I can only speak of chances because there can always be outliers) are a lot higher.

The only thing that is invariable during all those games are you. Excluding you, everything else causes a 50% winrate. You are the one thing that makes your average winrate (after a high amount of games, when the randomness evens out) deviate from 50%.

If you just continue playing, without caring whether your team is good or bad, you'll get to your own tier eventually. You might be held down for 50 games because of bad team, but in the next 50 games you might be carried half the time and win way more matches than you personally should've won.

Also note that if other players "don't care" or "play bad" the same is true for the enemy team. If everyone tried their best, it would be a lot harder to climb.

If, for example, your toplane feeds hard and you are fed, then there is not just you being good, your top lane being bad and the rest being average. It could also mean that your lane opponent is bad and your enemy toplane is good. It depends on who is the best/worst and how the other players deal with it. If you say you deserve to win each time you do well even when your allies do poorly, how would the enemy team feel? "Oh, we won 2 lanes, but that one enemy did well so we deserve to lose right?" You can't expect to win everytime you do well. Also, you won't lose everytime you do poorly. But... If you do well over 50% of the games (and the games you do poorly aren't significantly worse than the good ones are good), you'll win more than 50% of the time.

This is the most relevant answer on this thread. The math shows that volume of matches will inevitably put every player into their most appropriate placement.

Maybe you shouldn't pay $40k/yr to go to a garbage resort (school would be generous) that enticed you by offering you a small discount for being mediocre at league.

Sometimes I wonder if people would be less toxic if ranked was more fun. You're absolutely right, playing ranked games, especially series games, is just a nerve wracking experience where I feel like I have very little control. It makes sense that some people would get beat down after a while and just start snapping at people.

This. A million times this.

I was Plat 2 and teammates cost me so many wins by just. Not. Doing. Anything.

Renekton mid, 1 ranked game as Ren on record where he fed that game, too. No norms in match history, so can't even tell if he's even played Renekton before.

The slew of Ezreal mids that didn't have a clue what they were doing, all feeding mid.

The person feeding a lane who hasn't spoken all game and halfway to 20 minutes finally says, "I don't even play [insert position]".

And then people get pissy when you're asking them why the hell. Because it's just a game.

But so's baseball, and soccer, and football and lacrosse and any other sport. But if you were kicking the ball to the enemy team and standing around picking your goddamn nose, your coach would yank you from the game so fast your head would spin.

Yes it is just a game. But there's a section called "normals" where you can easily go and play for fun - why the absolute shit are you coming to ranked with the idea of "I'm just going to blow off this game and play for fun"?

Im just a shit bronze player so i cant really say much nore do i really understand you struggle

but as far as climbing in ranks goes and the people in the games?

its horrible people troll left and right they auto lock into lanes that are already taking forcing people into other lanes they arnt prepared for or dont have the proper champion to play that lane in recently i went vlad top had someone else go top and forced me into the jungle and i did horrible

and if you confront these people they just get toxic and tell you to kill your self and tell you you suck and the likes and i dont understand how these people are still allowed to play the game iv gotten into 8 games in a row with the same troll in all of them all on my team

climbing out of bronze it self is a chore and i cant even do that with the amount of bullshit that goes through it i know i im not the next best thing but at the same time i know i dont suck and have what it takes to get out but everytime i try i get shoved back down a few ranks because of trolls and the like...its getting to a point i just dont know what to do any more and i feel that i wont ever be able to get to a higher rank like gold and that is just my first goal iv practiced iv tried to duo iv tried my best not to get negative in games but damn

i just dont know what to do any more i feel ill never be able to join my friends in plat or gold even
