New AP Jg Item (My Problems With It)
So, while I don't think that the new AP jungle item is necessarily bad, it just doesn't really live up to the old runeglave option for certain AP junglers. In particular, Diana Ekko Elise and an assassin style Evelyn These champions used the old AP jg item quite effectively. I know that it had it's issues with other AP junglers but for these champions in particular it was actually pretty good.
My thought on this was that why couldn't riot have both the old and the new AP jungle items an option? This would actually help a lot opening up the way that you could build your AP jungler depending on how you wanted to play. (*note historically the AP jungle item choices of the past have been somewhat hard to balance with the problem of the mid lane picking it up.) Having two different AP items for the jungle should make it easier to balance without having to potentially give a slight nerf to all AP junglers.
To me, the old AP item was ideal for champions who would dive into the back line trying to kill or force out of the fight someone squishy.
The new one seems to feel more geared toward easier jungle clearing and being able to dish out a little more general damage if you weren't using the runeglave very effectively
This makes sense to me from a design standpoint because look at the different options that AD junglers get. There are several AD jungle champions that can utilize any of the jungle items aside from the AP option and still be pretty effective. So why not give AP junglers more options as well?
I would honestly like to know what Riot's opinion on this. To me at least, I don't see how having both options would hurt the game, it would just give more itemization options. I've only really tried it out with Diana but for her at least you really feel that she's lost a lot of her initial burst and follow up damage by taking away the runeglave. The damage is still KINDA there but it doesn't feel nearly as strong.
