@Riot, I remember seeing somewhere that if Sona was made more recently

She wouldn't have been made with the current ultimate she has due to the type of champion she is or something similar like that, I can't exactly recall who said it or when but I remember seeing it

So it makes me curious, what would you guys make as a different Sona ult if she was made more recently?

Oh god no. The last one was disasterrific.

Well, so long as it isn't handled by somebody who publicly hates Sona, we should be fine. So far, that list includes: Fearless; Meddler; Jag; and MAYBE Repertoir, but the first 3 have been very clear and open about their hatred towards her.

I've been personally trying to convince Ezreal and Guinsoo to handle it themselves and it seems I've caught the attention of Steve, but they both still choose to stay quiet regarding Sona.

Why the hate for Sona?

I'm not a Rito employee, so I don't know. I've asked them why on multiple occasions, but they refuse to answer.

sigh The only thing I can think of is that RIOT loves ADCs so very much and ADCs on both teams get salty about the same Sona... She does have the uncanny ability to half health a squishy.... and therefore KS...

I will admit that her scaling is among the worst, but the early-mid game after she gets item 3057 is a lot more than most champions' pokes... However, unlike other aggressive supports, it is her only damage ability other than her ult, therefore, when combined with the low AP ratios means that even though she has a LOT of early damage, it falls off really hard really fast around 25-30 minutes. This is however still late enough to force a surrender @ 20, and by the time that her early damage falls off, her teamfight support capabilities start to become particularly powerful (due to their comparatively good scaling), making her MORE of a support in late game than early game...

I play a lot of Sona and am a proud owner of DJ Sona.

Sheen is an artificial scaling that is based off your own base AD. Of which, after the shadow nerf Sona has the 12th-lowest base AD in the entire game and her AD growth is in the lowest third of champions. In reality, she benefits from Sheen far less than the greater majority of champions. If everyone were to buy a Sheen in early-mid game, it would only become MORE apparent how inferior Sona's damage is comparatively to other champs, supports especially.

Indeed. It just so happens that sonas access to damage is, at least in the lane phase much higher than say karma or leona. Q passive +sheen does a LOT of easy, repeatable damage.

Pika3103 votes

Sheen is the same price for ALL champions, it's no more accessible to Sona than literally ANYONE IN THE ENTIRE GAME. Staccato requires 3 stacks to charge(thus NOT making it "easily repeatable") and both Karma and Leona have a significant range advantage over Sona.

... i was agreeing with you and explaining the illusion columbo. Sonas damage is largely untargeted and AAs; this creates the ILLUSION that sona has more damage than other supports because her damage is FAST and very EASY to get out.

But if you want to kill your support, go right ahead.

Half of what a person says is in HOW they say it. You did a better job explaining your point in this post as apposed to the previous one which came off in a manner completely misleading to what you were trying to state.

What you say is true and the main reason bronze players are unable to grasp Sona's unplayability as a character. She will drop her whole combo instantly, much the same as a burst mage like Annie. Although it's mathematically impossible for Sona to blow up even a squishy champion doing this, unskilled players will think "Ouch, this hurts. I need to run away." without the realization she's truthfully lost ALL of her damage potential for the next fraction of a minute, if they'd just turn on her she'd literally die in 2 hits or less.

Now as for a real burst mage like Annie. She does this to you, you're dead instantly. She can even 100-0 tanky bruisers.

Sona factually has the 2nd-lowest damage potential of the entire support class as a whole.

And she factually still ends up dealing more than most supports so maybe obviously biased math doesn't tell the whole story

"KS" is a term used by morons who dont understand how team games work. ANY kill is a GOOD thing.

If youre that whiny pissant ADC who lets their support do 80% of the damage and then last hits the champion, or one of those shitty players who harasses the support who gets a successful Kill secure because they thought you wouldnt get it, you need to get your head out of your ass because youre the reason why people hate playing support.

Elindiir1 votes

For me, I have gotten to the point where I give a warning to my ADC that I WILL highly likely end up killing botlaners with my kit...

Endlessly harassing is often a good technique I find as it either 1: leads the enemy support to build MR instead of armor, or 2: the support building armor still gets hit hard and being forced out of the fight... This forces the enemy ADC to either play extremely defensively and lose farm to tower, or play very aggressively and take big risks. of course, this depends on the ADCs and the enemy support, but unless the enemy support can reliably heal, a poke v poke lane will either go very much in Sona's favor, or be a stalemate.

When I myself play carries, I honestly don't care who gets a kill as long as the enemy dies...

Honestly, her concept is terrible. She's a worse Annie right now, because all she can do is poke (rather unsafely in some matchups) and initiate, which does NOT deliver on the fantasy of playing a magical, mute musician.

That's why I responded with "rework." She's in a terrible spot in terms of balance, because if her auras become any more powerful, she'll be insane OP by keeping that ult. I know things haven't gone super well in the past for her, but she needs a rework. Riot is constantly learning how to do these champs better. I say, practice makes perfect. Lets see what they can do with Sona.

Get rid of the heal, give sona a defensive steroid (like a decent shield instead), and give her persistent auras with 50% the effectiveness of the active aura. suddenly you have a damage oriented support with massive team fight presence.

Precisely.

Despite the fact that this idea is the opposite direction of where I want to take her, you have illustrated very well the fact that a rework could benefit her immensely. :)

^^' sona could actually transition into a mage primary if they gave her some actual waveclear. making sona a mage primary would give her a HUGE increase in her power budget.

Elindiir1 votes

What if her Q aura did an AOE wave of damage... not a lot but like sunfire does but instead of a constant burn, a pulse... instead of a damage steroid aura... however, her passive proc can stay the same. I still like the heal and movement speed auras that give a nice amount of utility.... On the other hand, it is the very fact that she DOESN'T have wave clear that makes her able to be such a good support as she lets the ADC get the CS....

Another option could be that her passive proc on her q can be an AOE version of the damage dealt by her Q damage steroided auto, kinda like a ravenous proc... Therefore giving her wave clear when you aren't support, and avoiding farm stealing when you are support.

I doubt they spent much time working on alternate ults for Sona since they would never actually change an ability that has become so iconic to her. It was just something they noticed in hindsight that giving a tool like that to a champion like Sona made her very hard to balance.

Pika3105 votes

Yet at the same time, her ult is so archaic that it's become one of the weakest CC ults in the game. Just to list a few supports with stronger ultimates:

Bard Braum Annie Janna Lulu Morgana Nami Poppy

Be careful. I once compared him to a bad Malicious Metal and said I was tired of that, and my post got deleted and I received a warning. Apparently you must add something to the discussion, you cannot answer to blatant lies and bad faith with dismissal...

And don't forget the Sona fans like HostileMiku who will bitch at you for saying that Sona is somehow strong or in a decent spot.

An aoe, 1k range stun with a projectile speed faster than Ez Q, Lulu W, or and pretty much everything else on a 100 second cooldown is somehow worse than an aoe stun that requires a 3 second delay for the same duration.

The only one listed that is arguably better is certain situations is Janna's ult, but Sona's is more versatile.

Elindiir1 votes

A very good point there. Sona's stun is extremely useful in so many situations that it is on CD all the time. Wheras the other champions mentioned may have strong CCs that are only useful in certain occasions. The only CC ult that would truly be more effective is Amumu's.

I love Sona to death... she has a well rounded kit with a nice touch of damage, protection and CC... All without being totally overloaded... I can't imagine her ult being different as that ties her together...

What's funny is she has a similar character in Smite named Chang'e. The character is more of a musical dancer that uses arc attacks and evasion. The ultimate is almost exactly the same, except Chang'e's ultimate stuns for an additional second for every additional champion hit. It's kind of funny.

EDIT: To expound on Chang'e's ultimate: If it hits one champion, they're stunned for a second. The next champion registered is 2, then the next is 3, then 4, then 5.
