An Idea to make trundle a bit healthier to play against

Trundle's current q takes away 20 AD from his target for 8 seconds and gives him 40 ad for the same duration, since his q has a 4 second cooldown rank one(doesn't scale) he can always have this affecting both himself and his enemy from level one onwards. This is both annoying as hell to deal with and doesn't even fit in with the general style of the rest of his kit, since it mostly gives him very strong window's of power. Why not make it so that it takes more ad and steels more if he does it while on top of frozen domain(it has a 15 second cooldown so he can't constantly keep the ad steal up), while removing the ad steal from the regular ability, and maybe lowering the ad gain if its to strong. This will hurt his early game but make his ability to split push/duel, stronger while also making a noticable impact on his team fighting. Thoughts?

dont play AD top

the ad cut hurts everyone in the early game since auto's still hurt, plus how annoying it makes last hitting, besides most toplaners still use ad more effectively than they use ap, the only real ap champs in the toplane meta that i can think of are rumble, swain and kennan. Everyone else is still dealing with the fact that that they are going to be down 10-20 ad for the entire laning phase if their melee

If you picked a melee range top laner to fight Trundle, then you are wrong and you deserve to lose lane. His whole thing is bullying melee range lane bullies. If someone locked Trundle in to fight your melee top laner, then that's not him being OP. That's you not understanding how to fight him.

but thats not healthy for a champion to be able to win every melee matchup by default, that means that he becomes the only viable juggernaut since he just flat beats them, so why pick any of them. Also trundle is one of the best split pushers in league, with an ult that has massive utility in the late game, why should trundle be able to bully the vast majority of top laners when he has that? The idea of him beating melee lane bullies makes sense, but that isn't because of how his kit is able to negate them, its just that he can overpower every melee in the early game

He doesn't win by default. His kit allows him to win the trade at level one and snowball from there. Shut him down early, and the lane is yours. Let him get the upper hand, and you will lose. There's a reason for the meme that circulated once that said "Don't feed the troll." It was referring to Trundle and his snowball nature.

Trundle still provides way to much utility for how snowbally he is it means that when he's meta, he doesn't really suffer from falling behind to hard unless against a dedicated duelist like fiora. Its also means that he ends up sitting in the same niche that darius and illaoi hold in top, juggernauts that bully melee's in the early game, but just lacks a good catchup mechanism like they do

He has one slow+terrain change. Unless you actually build something to change that, he doesn't have anything more. He's next to irrelevant in teamfights after his one pillar except as a meatshield.

his utility is from his ult since it's more effective than black cleaver, and shreds mr at the same time. This may not be CC but it still effectively removes the enemy teams tanks from their normal role

Trundle gets outscaled by Jax and irelia as they can just out duel him, he isn't op or anything but he does do well against alot of melee champs that often have long drawn out fights. Pick a champion like pantheon to beat him or counter him with fiora. You already know his weakness in lane is against ranged so just play that, every champ in league excels at destroying a certain category of champs. Irelia can destroy ranged, Rammus destroys ad champs, vayne destroys tanks and it just so happens trundles wrecks melees.

My issue is that the rest of trundle's kit is made to kill tanks, so he beats ad melee champs, and tanks, so its really hard for him to actually lose against champs that are a mix between those like other juggernauts. Currently he is not op or anything but his niche does need to get more fleshed out. As for beating trundle, i don't have a problem with him myself, i rarely see him and I enjoy playing him, i just want him to have a healthier position in the game

Quite a few melee top laners can out-trade Trundle early and snowball from there. He doesn't really become a damage threat until...

  1. He reaches level 6
  2. He completes at least 1-2 damage items (i.e. Botrk, Hydra, and/or Trinity Force).

Until he completes the above conditions, quite a few melee champions can out-trade him, especially if they don't rely solely on AD to deal damage. Full build/late game is another story, but most games these days don't make it to that point. Trundle is strong due to his scaling and utility, not being a lane bully.

Most melee AD matchups I've seen tend to get their asses handed to them by trundle because he ruins their burst, gets the trade, and then just kills minions for the sustain. And yes, you are correct. Maokai wouldn't give a shit about Trundle's chomp. I should have been more specific and pointed out champions that specifically rely on their AD scalings and early damage to bully people out of lane, like Pantheon and Renekton.

That's probably because they just sit there and auto-attack trade with him, instead of kiting him when their abilities are on cooldown. Pantheon and Renekton have it easier against Trundle, than most, since neither have to commit to a trade to deal damage. Fiora, Darius, and even Riven can deal with him as well when played well (early game).

Fiora can actually out-duel him all game if she's played decently. Her sustain rivals his in a duel, and she does a ton more damage, while shredding tanks just as hard as he does (if not better). Both the cooldown nerfs to Subjugate and Pillar make it a lot harder to win trades against Fiora and it wasn't exactly easy before. She's probably one of my least favorite champions to play against in all honesty.
