Whats the purpose of smurfing in LoL?

Like if I Smurf in Dota, my unranked games while leveling all count towards a hidden mmr that effects my ranked mmr when I do my 10 placement matches. So you start at 2300, win a ton of unranked games and blammo presto you calibrate at 4300-4500 Dota 2 MMR. So the main reason people smurf is usually because they want to "main" a hero and see how high of a ranked mmr they can calibrate at when they hit a high enough level to calibrate. (or they think they are in "elo hell" and try to smurf a ton to get out of it, which never works xD)

But if I am understanding correctly, unranked games in LoL have 0 impact on the rank you receive when calibrating a fresh 30? Even if you were to win 80% of your games on the way to level 30 it would have no effect on your ranked calibration. If that's the case then why do people smurf at all in this game?

Side note: Just got a bit curious since I got a few friends who started playing and are finding the smurfing experience to be a bit much. Also worth noting this game could really use some smurfing detection. If I go 37/0 in my first 10 games in Dota 2 it doesn't just keep matching me with a bunch of new players mixed with other smurfs >.<

some do it to relax some do it to learn new champions . For example i could be diamond but play trynamere like a gold player.

they do it to grief newer players by roflstomping them and get a hard-on from it. ive tried to get a few friends into league, all but one has quit after getting trashed (and flamed / taunted) constantly when they moved to pvp games from bots.

3 reasons i do it.

  1. I have friends that started and low level and i think it is unfair for them to play against level 30s.
  2. spend ip on champions and learn them before i bring them into ranked or live matches on my 30 without wasting ip if i dont like the champ. because you know, runes are expensive.
  3. roflstomp newbs and laugh at them in all chat and troll

The one smurf account I made a few years ago, was so that I could play with a friend that was low level. I still felt guilty.
