Should I go into ranked?
So I just hit level 30 and I'm excited for ranked mode. My problem is that I don't want to go into ranked totally unprepared. What should I work on to make sure I'm ready for competitive play? (I'm a support main)

I disagree with a lot of the advice here. The only way you're going to get good is challenging yourself by playing where the competition is (ie. ranked), embrace mistakes, and don't overly concern yourself with points. Use an entry-level support to help ease your transition, such as Soraka, watch tons of YouTube videos, and don't be afraid to just /muteall everyone. Over-preparing isn't exactly a bad approach, but you'll create ladder anxiety for yourself and you'll end up playing worse. You need to just go in and lose, because no matter how well you prepare, it will happen anyways.
Here is some perspective: This Taliyah player from Europe is one of the leading Taliyah players in terms of mastery points... and he's only in Bronze V. To this day, he's still in Bronze V and still plays Taliyah, so yea, just don't worry about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gajBn6mt4og http://www.lolking.net/summoner/euw/63879589/etrusque1
After each game, watch a replay of yourself and ask a ton of questions over what you could have done better. Losing helps magnify your mistakes. Be your own worst critic.
I'm a support main to, and the last thing you want to do is rush right into ranked. First get, and I know this sounds like a lot but trust me, get mastery 7 on at least 3 different support champions. Next, find a duo partner, preferably an ADC, because ranking up as a solo queue support is literally the hardest thing to do in this game
First off, Congratulations!
Secondly, no don't rush it. You will meet the more in depth toxic side of the in-game community who will flame you.
Third, you should focus on gathering as much runes and a good champion pool.
Fourth, focus on one champion to main/play and a back up in the role plus a secondary role so if you don't get your first role you can default into that one.
Fifth, have fun! Mute all if they start smack talking or being negative.
Sixth, have fun!

It's better to over-prepare than to under prepare because once you get stuck in bronze or silver you will have to dig yourself out. But the problem is that no one tries hard in normal matches the way they do in ranked matches, so playing ranked games is the only way you can practice ranked. But what you can do is practice a champ in norms until out-playing someone with that champ becomes easy, then you're ready for having a 50/50 chance of winning your lane in ranked.
How to get ahead:
Don't waste time harassing anyone.
Don't play a champion you have no experience with in ranked. It's better to play a champion in an awkward lane that you're level 7 with than to play the perfect champion for that lane but only for the first time.
Don't ban champions that you only personally have trouble with until you can carry with a champ you're level 7 with, but rather ones that are op and will screw up your entire team. If you face a bad matchup, just sit near the tower. You will get pushed and lose some farm, but it's better than dying. If you can't tower farm, practice by noticing that ranged minions are killed by auto-towerhit-auto and melee minions are killed by towerhit-towerhit-auto.
Practice your secondary role and support occasionally in your free time, just in case you get stuck in a role that isn't your first choice.
Use wards. Lots of wards.
If a tank gets fed, itemize to get tank-killing items.
If you're a jungler, get the assassin fed.
If you gank and get a kill, don't tax lanes. If you lose the gank, don't tax anyone either.
If an assassin/fighter get's fed, don't go into the fog of war, at least not alone, especially late game.
Come mid game, rotate to towers that are about to get seiged by individuals after you push your lane.
If your opponents just won a team fight and are either fed or have 3 or more people pushing a tower at once, just let the tower die and back away until your team mates are up.
If you manage to get ahead in your lane and your other lanes need help, go help them. You will still need to decide if it is worthwhile to chip away at the opponent tower or to gank them which will depend on when the opponent will make it back to you versus how quickly your losing lane will lose their tower.
Call mia both in your lane and then an extra one in whoever's lane you think is about to be ganked
If someone is getting ganked and is going to die well before you get to them, unless your fed, just keep pushing your own lane because it's a waste of time to do anything otherwise
Don't split push late game unless your champion has an escape, you have wards and your have waveclear, or you have teleport. Most of the time team mates will want to force a 5v5 fight late game and they will crumble without that 5th person.
